...What? If you really want a non monopoly console, try a Steam Deck. Modern consoles are by NATURE monopolies, and Nintendo just took the number one WORST on that list.
I feel bad for many of the developers, some of whom got burnt by the extremely bad OG Switch specs and now release on PC and other consoles because Nintendo fans are so toxic.
Think Apple fans with less brains and money.

Unfortunately, System76 has no good hardware for me at the moment. And Tuxedo has the wrong keyboard layout (ISO) only, (I only use ANSI) and is a fortune to get shipped out of the EU.
If Clevo & Tongfang shipped better chassis, maybe I would consider them in the future, but right now, it's more money for less features.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I'll go further and add that once Apple locks the bootloader, these machines basically become e-waste faster than ever.
I'd rather buy a Windows laptop and slap Linux on it because Intel & AMD at least have upstream drivers for basic things and there are decent sized communities around ones such as Razer & Asus. (Open-Razer & asus-linux.)

Why do so many modern Nintendo games sound like torture to actually play?
I guess that's one reason that I left Nintendo consoles that I had used since 2002 to 2019 or so, ultimately leaving for PC. (There's many more reasons of course.)

I mean, what other FOSS options not based on Firefox exist that aren't Brave?
I mean, Floorp is pretty cool, but like Librewolf, when Mozilla goes down, so does all of the Firefox forks unless another organization steps in.

Windows Vista & 7 were the best looking versions of Windows. They basically were the Windows answer to Aqua and actually looked really nice. Too bad they were the last good versions of Windows...
Also, the only DE that looked that good was KDE 4, and unfortunately it's initial release didn't go so smoothly...

We need another company to fork a browser engine, even fork Gecko, in case Mozilla dies.
For now, it can be a soft fork, but once Mozilla goes, unless there are enough developers developing Gecko elsewhere (and I don't think there are), then so do all of the downstream forks like Waterfox, Librewolf, Floorp, and FireDragon...

Nintendo deserves more than the shit they already get for all of the unethical shit they do to their fans.
If they weren't as big as they are, they'd be dead pulling this shit.
I am very disappointed to see @npub14xr…84fx bending the knee to a asshat of a competitor. The Switch 2 is absolutely a competitor to the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED. Only once Nintendo breaks their walled garden or apologizes to their fans for all of the shit over the years will I reconsider.

This is exactly what we need.
With Lenovo and Dell removing their Linux preinstalled options this year, and many laptops not officially supporting Linux at all, I think this needs to change. I hope Framework's event on the 25th of this month is good!

Sadly, sometimes we have to make tough decisions. Do you want to support a company that actually is doing the right thing but have to buy too much and cost more, or pay less but support this rolling back 💩?
Unfortunately, right now, these options are exclusive afaik.
The best we can do is try to buy stock in some of these public companies and push for changes. I don't know what else we can do.
Kind of like smartphones removing headphone jacks; eventually you run out of options.

I would only recommend Kubuntu if you can deal with the annoying snap packages (and are willing to install flatpak post-installation) and are willing to upgrade to every non LTS version. Kubuntu 24.04 is on a super old version of Qt and KDE Plasma that has been abandoned upstream and is only supported (for now) until 2027), and 24.10 has Plasma 6.1 (which is a massive upgrade over 24.04's Plasma 5.27), but you have to upgrade every 9 months, which can be annoying.

Again, a highly curated desktop that strips a lot of options from the user CAN work, however, it needs to be open to criticism and implement the changes when needed, it needs to be able to execute those options that remain well, and it cannot be pushed as the only option by those enterprise distros. (Granted, that last issue isn't necessarily a GNOME issue, but it still is annoying that I can't find an enterprise KDE distro.)

I have nothing against some projects creating a highly curated experience if and only if they can provide enough of a niche to exist in, execute the niche correctly, and aren't the only option users are able to use and know about.
I have nothing against the idea of a DE like GNOME, but all of enterprise distros (SUSE Linux Enterprise, RHEL, and Ubuntu) ONLY supporting GNOME leaves a bad taste in my mouth against those distros. I don't think I'm the only one.

I never said that that was the right move in every situation. There's absolutely value on focusing on a few options and polishing those options. But when the only option(s) don't cover enough users and that option gets pushed to users, they're going to leave frustrated.
That's one reason imo why Linux failed to gain market share when Windows 8 flopped upon release because the Linux DEs were not in good places. (The other was most apps & games didn't work on Linux back then.)

The problem is when those users can't find or access these settings manually and they aren't toggled automatically on or off well.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a massive issue too.
Don't get me wrong, there's a issue with that, but there needs to be a balance.

There's a balance though imo. If you don't add enough features, people who want or need them probably won't use your software.
For example, say a large group of people are mostly happy with a video editing software, but they want an option for GPU accelerated timelines. If they need or really want that feature and there's no way to get it, then they won't use that software.
The same goes for a desktop lacking features 90% or more users need or want. (1)

To be fair, KDE mitigated the global theme issue shortly after the rm -rf bug that went semi-viral in the Linux space.
GNOME... I don't really care about their lack of theming, because I only use a few apps by them and i don't care about a "cohesive theme for all of my apps" given all of the electron apps. I'm more concerned about why some apps look broken only on GNOME Wayland because of a lack of server side window decoration support that GNOME devs REFUSE to implement.
