Fair, but it will be a LTS kernel, not the current as-is. That still means a whole lot more stability than the potential hot mess 7.x is looking at atm.
(Actually, there is a serious irony that a lot of Gentoo is rolling, but the kernel is LTS.)
I'm also not impressed by the alternatives to systemd so far. C'mon guys, learn from what systemd did right, then throw out what systemd did wrong.

What's wrong with OpenRC? I'm pretty sure it actually does just exactly that... It feels very much like systemd in regards to how it handles services and such and it even has a user mode. Are you thinking of sysvinit on some other distros that try to not use systemd?

@nprofile…rtl5 I feel like you may want to take a look at Gentoo. I'm not going to say it's immune to any of this, but even the things that might get in there at least you can better bypass since it gives so much control to the user.
(I feel like I remember seeing some comment somewhere that they aren't into vibe coding and I can say that they are currently using the 6.18 LTS kernel as the main kernel, so it's not going to include the stuff going into the bleeding edge in the normal kernel at least.)

Eg it's not 4096 or something if you might have thought so.
Anyway, their https servers are clearly put up fully expecting normal levels of user traffic, so all in all I would say just don't worry about it and go ahead and use them.

@nprofile…rtl5 I think they get AES acceleration or something from the CPU, but also, it just really isn't THAT much work in today's standards. It meant a whole lot more in the distant past with processors so much slower back then than it does today. Even the slower processors have so much more power per cycle that it makes a world of difference.
Bear in mind it's really small. What was it? 128-bit? 256-bit maybe?

@nprofile…rtl5 @nprofile…67n4 Agreed 1000%. I've heard that this could be done and I've always wondered why browsers didn't prioritize making it an effort to block all of this.
Really there are a scary level of things that just don't get the attention they should. Like why can browsers access your clipboard by default? I don't just mean write stuff. They can use an event to read it... Browsers seriously need to make a better effort to keep sites from getting access to any of this potentially identifying/privacy violating stuff...
Of course Chrome probably does this on purpose.

@nprofile…ggeh I mean, yeah they got more powerful CPUs, but that doesn't mean they should have been treated as if they were PCs.
They had a specific niche. Super cheap, super minimal general computing devices. A more powerful CPU was great, but that didn't mean it had to be treated like a desktop.
IMO they lost sight of that niche. RPi4 never debuted at $35, so if you can get one for that I'm surprised. That's mostly because it's old stock they're trying to get rid of at this point if so. It pretty much was the one that pushed the baseline up to where it is, though the RPi5 certainly took that a lot further. You definitely won't be buying a RPi5 at $35 any time soon...
The Zeros may be the closest to filling that old niche, but they also have more limitations to their bigger brothers

@nprofile…ggeh That's the excuse definitely. But it doesn't cost that much for the amount (and especially the lower grade) of RAM they put in there.
They were already getting ridiculous long before the current shortages. When they started going over $100 IMO that's when the hobby was already dying. RPi used to aim for a $35 device and that was what gave us a cheap, minimal, plentiful general computing device. But then they just sort of lost sight of all that.
It's not just price. They started just treating them as if they were some kind of full blown PCs. They stopped doing a super minimal, super optimized setup with specialized packages and configurations to make simple things doable in 256MB of RAM. Now you need 4+GB to use them well...
Raspberry Pi was killed by... Themselves.

Usually the rare few anime movies allowed to be showed to a western audience because how dare something from outside the west exist or whatever. Like I caught the very tail end of a Dragon Quest movie one time (yeah, apparently that's a thing) and then another time the tail end of this really dark Sonic movie. I got up earlier and earlier and never once caught a full movie. 😆

It's sad you missed out on the experience of getting up early on a Saturday morning to watch everything that came on inside a quiet household while everyone else was asleep. It's hard to explain how that felt for me. It didn't even matter if the cartoons were good or not as I lay there on the couch wrapped in a blanket. IMO your parents robbed you of something there.

The issue isn't that there could be an app for everything. The issue is that the apps for everything are actively evil and designed by corporations who have a heavily vested interest in keeping them from being minimal or universal.
There's no viable reason you couldn't do everything from, say, a HomeAssistant setup just running on your LAN from a cheap little device with no phoning home or anything.
People shouldn't hate that apps exist, computers, etc, they should hate what's being done with them. They could all be wonderful and helpful. Corporations made active choices to keep them from being to protect their profits.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm willing to bet it's non-compliant with privacy laws even in California, as limited as those are... (Yeah, the law itself is pretty contradictory.)
They don't have to do this. Systemd is not California (or Colorado) based. It's global and it's implemented globally, which means it absolutely is violating laws elsewhere.
They could have spoken to lawyers. The EFF would have been glad to take this up I have absolutely no doubt. They even could have listened to the voices of people saying "hey, this may not even be legal."
But it's being rushed through in a hurry instead.

@nprofile…rtup @nprofile…ay7w The problem is, they aren't being made to comply with laws in one or two areas, they're falling over themselves, ignoring dissenting voices in their rush to implement this in a thing that shouldn't even have anything to do with it anyway. Systemd just supposed to handle startup and services, not keeping records of the users.
The thing is, the laws aren't even binding them yet. Most don't even apply to them since they aren't centralized in those two states. The laws aren't even really finalized yet and implementations now may not even comply with the final laws...
And implementing those laws globally also tends to violate laws elsewhere. They're picking complying in advance with area laws that aren't even 100% legal over complying now with global laws that are.

@nprofile…maql I just realized what the scariest thing about this truly is. It's not even just that they're doing all this. It's how FAST they're pushing it through while ignoring any and all opposition. Like basically a lot of people already have it on their systems right now probably just from automatic or frequent manual updates.
This one person in particular seems to have made it a crusade to put age-gating into Linux and is doing PRs all over the place in a hurry, many of which are just being evaluated by Claude rather than real humans (well, I guess a big XZ-style exploit but even worse has been found in this process.) Just like that, a thing that invades user privacy to comply in advance with a law in one very specific area that can't legally be applied to people outside it is in.

The Xbox had some good console exclusives, and often better versions of games that were on PS2 :xbox:
I guess it had some advantages with games that were built primarily for PC, but other than a few of those, what was better than the PS2 versions?
I always felt like the PC games were still best on the PC. Especially in those days. Even the one I'd had the highest hopes for being fun on console (Morrowind) ended up being kind of blech on the Xbox. (Lots of slowdowns and such. But as a side note, if you had a CFW you could actually get quite a few mods to work on it at least, which was kind of cool. I don't think I've seen that again until Skyrim on the Switch and even it has to deal with a different texture format on any mods that use textures.)

@nprofile…rtl5 Glide was fairly simple to support in DOS. It was generally pretty stable. It wasn't until you started dealing with Windows and stuff like alt-tabbing that it became an issue. (I remember even having programs that actually disabled the start button for people to avoid accidentally bumping it. I do NOT miss that...)

@nprofile…rtl5 Even 640x480 makes a world of difference compared to 320x200. Even way back then I was nuts about getting higher resolutions out of everything that I could and hated that my PCs at the times generally couldn't handle it. (Well, not that Descent 1 had higher resolutions, but Descent 2 did apparently.) I still, to this day, as someone who grew up with everything on PC being 320x200 find it weird that people look at 320x200 resolution stuff now and think it is better that way so make stuff look like it on purpose.

I'd say the best stuff are things that are already synths. For example, electric guitars might be an example of something that probably comes closest.

I suspect the point is moot. Any semi-modern Chromebooks are locked down as much as an Apple device (albeit sometimes easier to "jailbreak" via exploits.) Google and OEMs realized quickly they could use that to cash in and people weren't fast enough on the draw in telling them no.

Given that I always had a system that was rather weak in those days, I imagine that homing missiles were probably worse for me than they were intended to be, lol. (When I later played the game on a faster system I was blown away how differently it felt. However, the faster system was a laptop and the LCD's ghosting made me feel sick, lol.)
Let me know if setting core type to normal works. I'm kind of curious now, lol.

@nprofile…wzht You may want to go down instead of up perhaps. (Eg output less bass/mids rather than more highs.) Or at least find a good balance between them since going up too high can cause plateauing in the waveform and clipping (as well as the potential hardware damage mentioned. Though if these drivers are as heavy as I'm betting from your description, it's probably not likely to damage them and that's probably more an issue with laptops and their dinky little drivers.)

@nprofile…gwm4 BTW as a point of fairness, Diablo 2 has a much different way of actually doing story stuff and pretty much the only way they could do it was that way.
RTS definitely works differently from other game types in this particular regard. Though this also means it's much much harder to work with...
Do you know about the Command & Conquer games btw? They don't reach quite this level I guess, but they sure did a great job in their own ways.

@nprofile…gwm4 They learned a lot from Warcraft/Warcraft II (some of which then later went into Warcraft III and of course World of Warcraft) but StarCraft definitely struck a lot of good balances right out of the box in that regard. Blizzard was actually really good at worldbuilding and story writing back in those days. Even Diablo II did surprisingly well.
Now I'm getting nostalgic for the way games back then actually really tried hard at having a bit of depth backing things up even when the gameplay was simple (I mean in Diablo II you're just running around killing things, lol.)

@nprofile…lptk There is the thing though. The DOS windows are essentially super minimal VMs without really a true full machine even being virtualized.
In comparison, QEMU and DOSBox actually emulate a whole system down to a really low level. QEMU is able to virtualize a bit of the processor access for more efficient operation (and DOSBox does to a much lesser extent) but they're actually pretty heavily emulating a whole system. (Keyword: emulation because they actually are emulating a lot and only virtualizing a bit.)
NTVDM comes closest to what those do, though even it doesn't go as far as they do.

I'm not sure what we're talking about here "pre-NT." Windows 9x? 3.x? 2.x? In most of those cases, it wasn't a VM at all, but actually the host machine because they were actually DOS-based (even 9x.)

I was just inspired to dig through some PS2 stuff as I started rebuilding a new drive for my old PS2. Did you #retrogaming fans know that there is a Phantasy Star 1 remake on the PS2 known as "Sega Ages Phantasy Star Generation 1"? It seems to have gotten... quite a lot more enhancement than the recent remake released on modern consoles. As in they put quite a lot of work into it.
Why on earth wasn't this reused when they did the recent remakes? If they worried people wouldn't like the enhancements they could have made it a toggle or something. I mean... the work was already done, why throw it away?

@nprofile…lptk No no, I don't mean that at all. I know about ctrl+mouse wheel and use it a lot. I mean the smoother movement as well as it being 2D. (I know some mouse wheels have left/right movements as well, but it's even more awkward than the normal wheel movement.) A joystick would be 1000x better at smooth scrolling content in one or two dimensions IMO and it seems a shame this didn't get adopted.
I don't think websites actually recalculate/redraw though. I think it's handled almost like a rendered image once it's done rendering a page. That's why there is such a huge rendering pipeline and probably even part of why they use orders of magnitude more RAM than seems at all decent. They even handle things like fonts internally and don't always respect some OS settings...

@nprofile…lptk That... actually is a really good idea and it's kind of too bad it didn't go more that sort of direction. Now I envision one of those dinky little nubs like some laptops used for mouse controls (or the 3DS for the right analog, lol.) It would offer a much more comfortable control and likely would last a lot longer than wheels tend to as well...

@nprofile…k6yr @nprofile…r0kn If "forrges" means forges, no, they don't own the actual chip manufacturing. They create the chip designs, but the manufacturing of the chips is done at TSMC (along with virtually everything else these days.) What they own are the actual chip designs and basically they just sell the chips and design specs to OEMs to make the cards. In fact, I don't even think nVidia themselves actually produces any real hardware directly beyond those chips. Quite a lot of their business consists more of licenses than physical products even.
TSMC is completely separate (not even US-based) and is also used by competitors like AMD.

@nprofile…7093 My parents used to put me on disk swapping duty for installations, lol. In retrospect I think I was shortchanged a bit on that. They'd watch a movie while I did the disks. I mean I'd turn and watch the movie too, but still!
I should probably demand back pay on this.

@nprofile…el4d Apparently plastics recycle very poorly and most are just thrown away even by recycling plants.
Not saying it can't be used, but plastic is definitely a thing we need to move away from in general.

@nprofile…el4d Yeah, sorry, that's why I added that edit. I think we need a balance of both things. More reusable stuff and more actual reusing, but for stuff where it's more efficient biodegradable options would be better.

@nprofile…el4d We also need to go back to reusables. Like using glass for a lot of things so we can keep reusing them for years and years.
They used to do a lot of that sort of thing I'm given to understand. Like people getting milk got it in glasses and would return the empty glasses to be reused for example. Now we get cardboard cartons with plasticized liner or straight up plastic jugs.
Obviously there is a significant downside -- especially with glass. It has to be thick to not be very breakable, but even then can still be broken. However, it's very very reusable and inert without breaking down over time and can even be recycled (unlike plastic really.)
Unfortunately, companies just don't even sell stuff this way anymore.

@nprofile…el4d Same really. It was my father's old one (crazy he used to actually play some games, but for some reason it was mostly only Halo) and I had no interest in the incredibly small number of games that were exclusive to it. Honestly, to me it always felt clunky and such anyway.
I was a bit disappointed I couldn't do as much as I'd hoped with it though. In the end a very long VGA cable to my PC won out instead, lol.

@nprofile…el4d Kodi really is a wonderful thing isn't it? And modern systems can handle so much more than they used to be able to. Back in the day weaker systems could really struggle to do decent video playback. I remember having to reencode a lot of stuff to be friendlier towards my lower end hardware. (And since you bring up Kodi, its original incarnate, XBMC on the Xbox 1 -- the first one, not the third one that is called the first one even though it is the third one and not the first -- was definitely not happy with like half of my collection back in the day, lol.)
Kodi really does have a great interface for running on minimal and embedded devices. It even works just wonderfully with those wireless remotes you can get for computers.

@nprofile…el4d I hear manufacturers are very careless about SMART implementations and they shouldn't be trusted too much. Though, that said, that's probably a distinctly possible thing with normal HD usage.
