I think they get AES acceleration or something from the CPU, but also, it just really isn't THAT much work in today's standards. It meant a whole lot more in the distant past with processors so much slower back then than it does today. Even the slower processors have so much more power per cycle that it makes a world of difference.

Bear in mind it's really small. What was it? 128-bit? 256-bit maybe?
