Poll reprise
Like many New Yorkers, Zane is often on the move and follows the love of street food popularized by Anthony Bordain; he's got a favorite bánh mì truck near Midtown and just discovered a lady making excellent coxinha at the edge of Roosevelt Park.
The night he microwaved a burrito he didn't remember buying, and wondering how it would pair with his bourbon, was a wake-up call.
He's skittish about nigirizushi from a food truck...

Create a poll listing 2-3 objects that have featured in your work and one that hasn't. Ask people to pick the one that hasn't.
Zane has a wide set of culinary tastes. Which one has he not eaten across the course of the story so far?

Our next featured creator is a group of three collaborators. Have you ever been part of a collaborative group for your creative work?
Creating Sinister Minutes is me writing and narrating a short story, promo, remarks, and satirical ad. Tim takes that raw file, composes the music, creates the mix, and sends it back to me for review. The process works well.
Collaborate on writing, though? That's fallen through each time I've tried it.

What 'character' (letter, number, symbol, punctuation, space) would make a great main character?
Þ - the thorn, a character from Old English, Old Norse and Old Swedish alphabets that survives today only in Icelandic. Þ is the personification of the thorns providing protection around Sleeping Beauty, Brunhild, or other characters of myth and folktale. Þ is of course taken for granted by those who invoke them; but what are they giving up to provide that prickly obstacle?

Borrowbox is also connected to libraries throughout the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. Overdrive and Hoopla tend to be the big players in the US. I'm a lifelong fan of libraries and borrowing books in any format 🙂

Have you ever listened to an audiobook where the reader had a good voice, but not the 'right' voice?
I love audiobooks. I've been getting them from the library since the days when I had to go there and pick up a set of cassettes (now of course it's just tap-tap).
I pay a LOT of attention to narration (as I'm always trying to build my own skills) and a voice that doesn't fit the story is a DNF waiting to happen. Audio can open up a wider market...only with the right voice.

If e-books stopped being produced, how much would you miss them?
A lot - they're pretty ingrained for me at this point. I'm constantly reading ARCs, short story anthologies, chapters for critique, non-fiction/educational material, articles of all sorts, and the ebook format means everything fits neatly in one package that I can bring with me anywhere and never have to worry that I brought the wrong thing, or that the book I picked today isn't as interesting as I'd hoped.

#ScribesAndMakers 3
Which ebook reader do you use?
I'd say "all of them" but there are countless apps I haven't come in contact with. More importantly, I don't want to be limited in my reading by technology, so I make sure I have apps that can read a wide variety of ebook formats. Those are all, by the way, loaded on the 8" tablet that lives next to my pillow. If I'm on the desktop, Calibre opens pretty much everything.

Describe a statue you have seen that struck your fancy.
I've long been partial to 'Medusa with the Head of Perseus' by Luciano Garbati. Mythological legends can always use a well-placed storytelling kick in the pants, and I think this statue rights at least a few wrongs from that particular story quite nicely.

I was a Crim-head first, starting back in high school. "Sober" got me into Tool, and the more I listened, the more I started drawing comparisons between the bands.
Here's one: listen to the interlocking guitars on this track, then go back to hear Adam's work on either 46&2 or 7empest.

I've only seen Tool twice, but...well, those were memorable shows.
King Crimson is more complicated - I saw them under that name twice, but if you count all the spin-off bands...including last year's Beat tour with Danny Carey on drums, that number shoots up quite a bit 🎵

Do you like music with unusual time signatures?
Yeah, this cartoon was made for me.
My taste in music runs to the complex. I'm fine with a dance beat around others, but don't seek it out when alone.
Lifelong jazz and prog fan. King Crimson were masters of the time shift, and Tool picked up that torch. There's no mosh pit at a Tool show with good reason. Hell, even with Zep, it's the lovely polyrhythmic Kashmir I'm reaching for.

Which of these would you like best for a weekend creative retreat: lake house, mountain cabin, city apartment, or oceanside hotel?
Lake house means kayaking, while mountain cabin is hiking; if they are both as isolated as I'm picturing them there's lots of quiet inspiration to be found.
But then, immersion in a city can provide so much: snippets of dialogue, possible scenarios, perhaps even a dog in sunglasses riding a skateboard.
Oceanside is last. Never a beach person.

There is definitely something lovely about the scent; I take it the *soap* sensation does not extend to the bouquet?
Also, it must be fresh. Dried cilantro/coriander tastes like nothing.

Cilantro has such a unique flavor; I can't imagine some dishes without it (but thankfully the "soap" gene is switched off for me).
Years ago, part of a ceremony I was helping to facilitate involved sharing small cups of soup. The other facilitator made me promise to add no cilantro, but then it was me who almost lost it when I tasted my soup mid-ceremony and realized she'd added a ton of hell's own herb, dill.

Do you plant a garden each year?
It's more like, I *modify* the garden each year. Vegetable growing is not my greatest talent, but I seem to have cultivated a love for flowers. Here's a current sampling:

Before I pick this up, a quick question...is there any difference to the author, even if slight, if I purchase from one platform vs another?

Good call. I'm keeping my FB account open to keep tabs on a few folks, but overall Meta has been awful: there's no distinction between "I'm doing this thing to make a profit" and "I just want like-minded people to find each other" and I refuse to give Zuckernuts a dime.
Especially after reading about all the heinous things he did right before he died earlier this week. 😅

The seasonal thing is interesting. It may explain why I only "won" NaNoWriMo once - and I recall struggling all month to keep crafting more words and not fix the ones I'd already written. November is simply not my drafting season - at least, not here in the northern hemisphere.

I used to focus on the novel or other long project and not allow myself the freedom to consider anything else. Lately, I've written a number of short fiction pieces s well as a bunch of just-for-fun drabbles on a discord writing group, and at the same time I think I'm making *better* progress on the novel. I suspect that my creativity is just not something that adapts itself well to priorities and deadlines.

2024-11-22 13:50:04 UTC

Absolutely. I've learned not to fight my writing urges; if I try to tell myself I "must finish this before considering that," I'll never work on either project.
My novel progress has faltered of late, and I'm sure it's because of my reaction to the US election. I found I needed to first write a short story that helped push a lot of anger out of me and onto the page. Many characters died.
Finally, just in the last couple of days, I was able to move back into the novel.

Out of every single one of your characters, who would be one who to believe in ghosts?
Rational, highly-scientific-method Haley, of course. Nana's always been there for her, and hasn't allowed her own death to come between them. It just takes a while for Haley to realize that.
She's keenly interested in how the dead seem able to reach across the veil and affect some people but not others, and suspects a neurological key.

Lady Hel, Queen of Quest's End;
May he find peace within your domain,
Warm sunbeams in which to rest,
Catnip aplenty to roll in,
And fingers to skritch beneath his chin.
