US GDP has been climbing even as more and more people are homeless, more and more people food insecure, more and more people go bankrupt due to healthcare costs, more and more people's life savings and inheritance are sucked away by elder care... But all of those represent huge income and therefore, theoretically giant productivity?

Your project is a human rights project. its about the right to control your own information, its about the right to privacy, its about resistance of the surveillance system that far exceeds anything George Orwell could ever imagine. Promote it for what it is. One strategy of abusers is to always control the topic of conversation. putting you on the defensive accomplishes this control. resist!

They've been using Linux desktop machines since they were 5 or so, but they mostly point and click things, command line stuff is limited to basically cd, ls, and maybe running a command, occasionally chmod.
That's a lot compared to their peers, but I still think they'd benefit from like a PDF or website they can quick reference so they can learn a bit more independence. chmod, mkdir, touch, emacs key commands, the names of files like /etc/fstab, find, or whatever.

Friends #linux countryfemmes...
When I arrived at college in the early 90's Unix machines were just not available to home users, so the Unix machines at my school were something I had to learn from scratch. The computer center at my campus had several dense 2 sided quick reference handouts for common commands at the command line, and for using Emacs printed on colored paper in stacks in each lab.
Fast forward, it's 2026 there is probably a better quick start for my kids... what is it?

Also the professor accused him of using AI instead of answering himself. Finally, when he asked her to explain what was up she said she gave him a bad grade just to wake him up, and that he actually had done everything 100% right and he just needs to reformat some things into a template she prefers...

I think it's a good point, but also I think we are at a point where people with tons of money can buy up property and then mint new money through bank loans using the property as collateral, so by itself tax on cash holdings is not enough to change this power structure.
Especially when it comes to ownership of physical capital assets allowing extortion.

2026-02-13 23:17:01 UTC

- reply

Anyway if you can't figure out why you LOVE the kind of work you do, but you absolutely HATE your job. It's likely because you hate BUSINESS, the *extortion scheme*, because that's literally what business is. What you love is *industry* the process of creation.

2026-02-13 23:13:33 UTC

- reply

Business is Owners of corporations, managers who serve those owners, bullshit jobs that stack up just to help run the extraction schemes, or enhance the egos and salaries of their higher up managers, lawsuits against competitors, enforcing copyrights, patents, and trade secrets, hiring people just so the competitor can't hire them, and having them do nothing all day, proprietary systems that don't interface with other systems because it's illegal to modify, per seat licenses...

2026-02-13 23:12:07 UTC

- reply

And this explanation just explains SO MUCH. Look, I LOVE industry. I want SO BADLY to help you all design things, keep things running, know why stuff breaks, analyze your collected data, create mathematical models to make things better or more accurately or whatever...
But business... fuck business.

2026-02-13 23:08:43 UTC

- reply

Although owner/operators have a certain amount of power that spills over from capitalist power, they also have the ability to work harder or less and adjust the output of the company because they themselves contribute to the **industry** and that's the difference. Business is defined in their classification as extraction of profit from industry by threatening to destroy or reduce industry's effectiveness by legal means, and industry is "doing the work to make the stuff"

2026-02-13 23:06:41 UTC

- reply

Bichler and Nizen exclude the contribution of "owner operators". So for example if there's a local construction contractor and the owner is hauling materials around, inspecting work, doing quality control, interfacing with customers, helping with designs, etc... that person isn't what they consider a "capitalist", meaning a "pure owner".

2026-02-13 23:03:35 UTC

- reply

Moreover, Musk is only in a position to sabotage industry. He literally does nothing that can improve the output of bikes, he can only threaten to withhold access to capital such as buildings, machines, trucks, shipment contracts, etc etc.
The capitalist can always call the police who will enforce his protection racket for him. If fired workers refuse to leave the building the cops will forcibly remove them. If workers take designs with them, cops will arrest them for stealing

2026-02-13 23:01:21 UTC

- reply

They threaten to fire workers, thereby sabotaging the output of the bike factory, unless workers agree to wages that are sufficiently low that after sales of bicycles and paying wages, there is money left over for Musk /owners. Since the workers rely on these jobs to eat and maintain their shelter and childrens health and such, the workers accept this protection racket like the owner of a restaurant pays the mob so that their glass storefront doesn't get broken weekly

2026-02-13 22:59:09 UTC

- reply

Musk is busy doing other stuff, he is not actually *running* this bike company, he merely owns it. Similarly I merely own some shares of various companies in my IRA or whatever, I don't participate in any of them.
As owner Musk now is in a position to extract profit. But how? Bichler and Nizen argue that capitalist owners of corporations extract profit by a protection racket.
/n

2026-02-13 22:55:06 UTC

- reply

First how does the insight work. To them, an "industry" is a group of people cooperating together to produce goods and services. The bicycle industry is welders, painters, truck drivers, engineers, quality control and inspection people, testers, marketing, and some ordering and logistics and bookeeping etc. Each person does something needed to get bikes into the hands of customers.
But suppose you're Elon Musk or whoever and you just buy 55% of the stock of some bike mfg.

https://capitalaspower.com/2023/01/bichler-nitzan-the-business-of-strategic-sabotage-2/
In this article, they argue that although we think of businesses as being "in an industry" like "Trek is in the Bicycle industry" the concept of Industry and of Business are not only separate... they are opposite!
I'll explain why I think this is a key insight in a thread.

2026-02-12 19:49:12 UTC

The thing you should know with respect to my threads on liberalism this morning, is that as a teen, I fully bought into the liberal mindset. I was like "classical liberal" I believed the stuff about "freedom" and "equality" and "the rule of law" and "justice as fairness" at least, I thought I did. I considered the failings of governments in the liberal tradition to be bugs to be fixed. I thought we needed to adjust election mechanisms and elect better smarter more honest politicians. @npub1hpk…88gd

Took the old one out, it clearly had deteriorated and had huge friction compared to what it was supposed to (possibly minerals possibly plastic degradation). Went and replaced the handle with a new one from ACE hardware, problem solved. Thanks for the advice!

2026-02-06 21:38:16 UTC

- reply

So looking into it further, i'd say it's old plastic that's degraded and become much higher friction, so I think I'll just replace the handle and it'll probably work fine once I do that, at least that's a good first step I think. the plastic is clearly brittle so might as well replace now and then solve further problems from that starting point.

2026-02-06 21:19:20 UTC

I imagined a sliding weight so I could adjust the torque to tune it just right. I did do it myself. Likely the handle came with the original flush valve and was designed around the fairly heavy ABS plastic piece that was used instead of a flapper. So maybe I should just buy a new handle, and/or just take it apart and put it back together, cleaning it and seeing if it is too tight or has minerals dried on it or whatever that makes it sticky.

2026-02-06 20:46:10 UTC

#plumbing people. I've got a toilet where after replacing the flush valve, it's now a flapper, and so the weight of the mechanism is less, and the handle doesn't return up after pushing down. I remember to pull it up, but my wife often forgets. There's no reason she should have to remember, a simple weight would provide the torque to right the handle... surely such a weight is a thing already commonly available and you can just buy them right? What are they called so I can find it at the store?

Mastodon is limited in bandwidth so I focus on the simplest examples. Its not vigilante justice to stop a person chasing another person down the street with a machete. it is vigilante justice to find out that someone got cut up, assume who did it, hunt them down and do them harm. one is immediate defense the other is vengeance etc. they are different.
Deterrence effect of cops is extremely sketchy evidence wise like... takes all kinds of statistical assumptions to try to detect

the utility of a form of defense yes, but seriously, how many harms do real world cops prevent?
There are some people who have embraced being evil and harming others. We have very shitty systems in place purportedly to do something about that and we have virtually no evidence that the system actually does anything about that overall on average.

When we say ACAB its not because we think cops are individually each brutal jerks who hurt people for fun (its probably only some large majority). They couldn't all individually be that. In a random selection of them there must be at least a couple who went into the job to try to protect neighbors from crime or whatever. The problem is, thats not what cops are FOR. Cops exist to enforce the property laws that are at the foundation of the rich privilege system, modern feudalism called Capitalism

Capitalism isn't "markets and money" capitalism is states creating laws that say people may own the land and the radio spectrum and certain numbers (copyright) and the products you produce with machines they own... Its ownership over things thousands of miles away because papers say so and cops bust your heads if you dont comply.

Its important that you guys understand that Anarchists aren't against economic well being, they're not against specialization and cooperation of people to produce products and services, we aren't primitivists (some of course may be but not in general). We are against the use of force to extract value from and control others. we are against laws making it illegal for people to do things without rich peoples permission.

Its like the people saying they need the local police to step up and protect them from ICE or the people who glow over Bill and Melinda Gates foundation... fuckers you are completely missing the boat.

PREACH SISTER
The real reason we have the fascism we have is the people who want the pre-fascist crap we had back. GWB wasn't sending ICE goons to LA or whatever but he sure was sending marines to Iraq and Afghanistan. His father probably masterminded the Iran Contra affair, state funding contra terrorism, and the cocaine wars of the 80s... Like, pick a decade and I can pick some horrific shit the US did in that decade...

The Nazis Miller and whoever else puppet Trump dont need a massacre of ICE agents to give them permission to do Gestapo shit, but it'll help to recruit the military who will be able to tell themselves they're suppressing lawlessness. We all understand what the real lawlessness is here, but the 19 year old light infantry troops with the buzzcuts who just finished indoctrination will see it differently and will convince themselves they're doing the right thing when they invade cities with tanks

2026-01-15 06:19:53 UTC

Everyone in the country whose paying attention understands that ICE is literal Gestapo, that they've been hired to ramp up terrorist tactics and smash any sense that anyone has any constitutional rights that mean anything, plus they are bait for eventually some citizens to protect their community with countervailing violence which will trigger a mobilization of the military at large scale to do all the shit the generals were told at that fucking Hegseth meeting.

not calling out Artemis... this was meant for anyone who might want to do Anarchist mysteries, she just occurred to me as a possible candidate.

2026-01-15 02:18:13 UTC

If you ever wanted to become a mystery writer I think there could be a market for Anarchist mysteries... in my view this genre already kind of exists, often the PI is a symbol for an extra-systemic source of justice. But it could be a lot more explicit and propagandize for cop abolition and horizontal mutual aid networks and such. create a fictional world people would want to inhabit

well if I gotta be sick in bed I might as well watch murder she wrote, plenty of episodes, they're free, and from an era when people respected writing instead of just action.

A classic VW bus in light blue, it is a survivor of the Palisades fire. Theres a wall display of a photo of it in the midst of devastation.

Hard to pick a favorite car from the auto museum, but honestly the thing I was most chuffed to see was the "Ferrari" from Ferris Buellers Day Off (1986)

the whole "autistics dont have a fully functional theory of mind" often said by textbooks etc probably should be rephrased as "autistic people think allistic people are baffling but get along with and understand each other just fine thank you"

Ron said the listing freaks are also all over herping as well. and he even mentioned one particular town where if you go to the one cafe for breakfast theres practically a dividing line with the rare birders on one side and the rare herpers on the other... Like the Lister brothers hes not a fan of the competitive or list oriented subculture, but finding salamanders, newts, frogs, lizards, snakes, etc just for the beauty of experiencing wetlands and nature is a great thing.
