German road safety advocate @npub1wgv…y4wf was sadly killed while cycling yesterday. His final post on Mastodon from the day before describes a near miss with the driver of an SUV who was completely unapologetic about putting his life at risk.
The fear that all of us have, who cycle on roads shared with inconsiderate and entitled drivers, is real. Our anger at near misses, close passes, and aggressive driving, is fully justified.

I heard Adrian Weckler talking about this earlier in the week and can't get around the fact they think it's a bad thing. EVs are getting cheaper and cheaper, and the rapid change in price means people are disincentivised from upgrading their car every two years. These are two massive positives for anyone concerned about the environmental cost of car-dependency.
EVs are now more affordable than they've ever been and the people buying them will be keeping them for longer.

Last count of the year. I'll report in the new year on the data for 2023 when we will see the impact of the works that took place on the lane since pre-Covid times.
A reminder that between the last count in 2019 and the current 2023 count, some of the cycle lane has changed to 24hr use and some parts have had flexible bollards installed, both standard height and stumpies.
This appears to have had some impact on driver behaviour but has by no means eliminated the problem.

Truly the end of an era. I first visited Marks Bros over 30 years ago and have been drinking Simon's coffee and eating his sandwiches every since. Simon is a Dublin institution and I hope this doesn't spell the end, or even a dramatic change, to the wonderful café he built.

This also has an unhelpful impact on Google Maps journey options which tell you to disembark at James' Street and walk down Steeven's Lane, and the reverse on the return journey, presumably because that's quicker than taking the route all the way to the station.

I got the new S2 bus this morning from Rathmines to Heuston Station and it's really great to finally have a frequent, reliable and direct public transport link to the station but the route does an odd thing after you come through St James' Hospital. At the top of Steeven's Lane, when you're already in sight of the station it heads all the way in to Bridge Street and then back out the quays.
Surely there's a way to allow it to use the Luas route straight down Steeven's Lane?

Bearing Martin McGuinness' coffin could be rationalised because he himself had made the transition to statesman. Bearing Brian Keenan's coffin is a little harder to defend.

If you didn't see the documentary on the kidnapping of Thomas Niedermayer earlier in the week I recommend watching it back. But be warned, it is a harrowing story, not just for the immediate impact of the events but for the generational trauma it caused which still impacts on the family today.
There was a chilling moment towards the end when they showed the 2008 funeral of the IRA Commander who ordered the kidnapping, and the camera focused in on the pallbearers.

@npub1z6j…3hlg @npub1y98…fhhs In Ireland we have started somewhere - we have had free public transport for pensioners since 1967 and we introduced half price fares for adults aged 19-23 last year as well as cutting public transport fares generally by 20%.
We need to go further, but completely fare-free public transport would likely overwhelm the system. However we are also investing heavily in improving and expanding public transport here which will, IMO, be far more effective at reducing car-dependency.

Otherwise all you achieve is people moving from other sustainable modes (walking and cycling) to public transport with very little impact on car use.

The council have never shared the details of the deal with the developer and which was done entirely behind close doors and never, to my knowledge, discussed in any detail at council meetings. Local councillors certainly seemed to be in the dark as to what exactly was agreed, as reported by @npub1y57…zjag at the time.
A design for the space was produced 18 months ago and went to public consultation, but there has been no sign of any further progress since then.

This means one of two things:
1. The redesign is not going to happen and we've ended up with a worse public space than we started with, or
2. The public space is going to be taken out of commission again for an extended period of time while it is upgraded.
The council has had two whole years to come up with a plan that could have seen the space redeveloped alongside the construction works on the hotel but we have now missed that opportunity.

Remember that time Dublin City Council handed over most of the public space at Portobello Harbour for two years to facilitate a private commercial development?
And remember Owen Keegan assured us this was fine because he had done a deal with the developer and they would fund the redesign and redevelopment of the public space?
Well, the hoarding finally came down this week and the space has been returned to the public, with half of the granite paving replaced by tarmac and no redesign.

I've just listened back to the piece on Newstalk. I wouldn't recommend it.
Pat Kenny used the example of someone trying to get from Lucan to go to the Abbey Theatre. They both agreed that this was impossible except by car and that the new restrictions on private cars would make that impossible too.
No mention of the brand new #BusConnects bus plaza at Liffey Valley and the new C-Spine bus which will get you there quicker than driving.

My commute to work is a short bike ride - about 10 minutes on a good day. And on that short journey everyday I witness multiple breaches of Road Traffic laws. This morning's list:
- parking in a bus lane
- pulling out without indicating
- driving in a bus lane
- breaking a red light
- using a mobile phone while driving
- driving without lights
- driving with defective lights
One garda on a bike could keep himself very busy cycling around Dublin's streets in the morning.

It's over five years since the Caiseal Mara Hotel in Moville was fire-bombed, and arson attacks have been taking place with increasing regularity since then (apart from a brief lockdown respite).

We can only assume that he is doesn't take any issue with what his party colleagues Seamus Walsh and Noel Thomas have been saying.
The silence is also notable from Fine Gael Senator Seán Kyne who lives down the road in Moycullen and whose family has a business in Rosscahill.

The other Fianna Fáil councillor who has been spreading fear about asylum seekers is Seamus Walsh, who describes himself as a "planning consultant and farmer". I wonder was he acting in his role as a planning consultant when he was successful in getting the land of his fellow FF councillor rezoned in 2009.

And there we have it, a Fianna Fáil councillor from Rosscahill on Morning Ireland telling us that "Ireland is full" and that we can't house 70 "young males" in a disused hotel.
He very proudly insisted that all the people involved in Friday's blockade were local people i.e. that it hadn't been infiltrated by far right agitators (as if this was something to be proud of) but was adamant that no locals were involved in the arson attack on the hotel on Saturday.

@npub1w7l…jd0d it was the same yesterday evening - we brought the kids (including the slightly reluctant teenagers) in to see the lights and it was a lovely atmosphere which everyone enjoyed.

And the Christmas Market at Dublin Castle was really well run - mulled wine, hot chocolates, a merry-go-round, and live music from the Dublin Gospel Choir.

Dublin Airport Authority is applying for planning permission to increase passenger numbers from 32 million to 40 million per year.
It will be interesting to see how that is assessed against the Climate Action Plan.

@npub1hue…2py0 I never use the two-way cycle track when I'm travelling from College Street to Dame Street for three reasons:
- it's more dangerous (getting to it means crossing a fast moving lane of buses and taxis)
- it's a longer route
- there are more traffic lights to wait for
I usually go through the Luas stop if it is clear (keeping to the right of the tracks) otherwise I cycle on the parallel carriageway and take the lane to avoid being squeezed off the road.
