Do you happen to know if this "Why" is the same "Why" who wrote "Why's? (Poignant) Guide to Ruby"?
(Seems very unlikely to be the same person—but I'm so out of the loop that this name confusion also feels like when people are excitedly talking about the Swedish metal band "Ghost" but I mistakenly think they're excitedly talking about the Japanese experimental psych-folk band "Ghost".)

About 10 years ago a professor I know had wrist surgery and had to go almost a full semester with absolutely minimal typing.
She got used to using dictation eventually, but in the meantime we got lots of emails with stray sentences like "oh for duck's sake. Duck's sake? Class, you know I'd never say duck when I want to say duck. Anyways…"

The "like me" here points in multiple possible ways.
I've taken to interpreting it as an invitation to examine the degree to which I personally do the thing being critiqued.
If I don't do it? Then yeah, it's middle class white men "like me" structurally, but not "like me" individually.
If I discover, to my horror, that I actually do the thing? Wow! What a gift to be called in and be given the choice to do better!
White people like me, we all need to do better.

Grateful that somehow* I learned, when first starting to think of myself as "feminist" back in the 90s, to learn how not to take critiques of "white men 'like me'" as specifically meaning "I personally do the thing being critiqued".
One of the skills we more privileged folks need to learn is how not to put ourselves in the way when more marginalized people "punch up" at the systems that harm us all.
Momentary ego & emotional comfort are less important than coalition building.
*Maybe it was reading bell hooks? Maybe it was listening to Fugazi? Maybe it was Maybeline?

For whatever it's worth, when I read comments like hers, I understand them to be critiquing "white people _who are invested in whiteness_" not "every last person who is white".
I know that it's not literally the distinction she wrote in that post, but I don't expect people to always write precisely when they're frustrated.

The highlight of my "performing music live" experience has definitely been the time one of my bands opened for Beauty Pill.
I still sometimes get their live intro to "Rachel Wallace" from that night in my head out of nowhere: "I got separate / From the product / Of my labor", sung in the round. (Cleverly but disappointingly, this intro wasn't on the original release, although they did include it here on the re-release: https://beautypill.bandcamp.com/track/rachel-wallace-overture )
Anyways, this is the backstory of why I sometimes think "I got #Federated…" but realize almost no one else will catch the reference.

If you're going to come into my mentions to tell me that my aunt, my mom, & my 10+ extended family members who've all had to scramble to sort out transportation in the last couple of days somehow deserve a horrible death by drowning because Florida has been developed in ways that benefit automobile manufacturers & petrochemical industries?

My aunt, who is in her early 60s, is disabled in a way that means she's never learned to drive. Despite working her whole life, her disability also means that she likely couldn't afford a reliable car even if she could drive.
My mom is recovering from a back injury and only was able to resume driving about a month ago.
They live together in the Florida Panhandle, and thankfully have been able to head north to their other sister's house near the Florida/Alabama border with a ton of my other extended family.

Before you boldly type that you have no sympathy for people who aren't getting out of the way of #HurricaneHelene , please remember that the Big Bend / Panhandle of Florida has effectively zero regional public transit.
People who can't drive (due to economics or disability) have already been abandoned en masse by #Florida's governments & US automobile-centric city "planning".
Don't harden your heart toward the many people—unsurprisingly, folks already marginalized—that #America has abandoned.

I honestly don't understand the leap in logic between seeing the popularity of a contextless toot proposing a couple of brief acronyms expressing anti-paywall & anti-AI sentiments and these somehow illustrating a more general tendency for reply guy behavior on here.
(I'm also not going to get into that person's replies about this, for reasons that should be utterly obvious.)
Do people not use these acronyms among friends? Do they not use them as responses to reply guys?
The extended conversation about reply toxicity is good, but the occasion for it seeming somehow obvious to everyone involved just baffles me.

I mean, I'm not knocking the plug-in, which is perfectly cromulent and probably doing as much as a plug-in can.
But the VS Code find & replace interface highlights what will be matched in your note as you type the RegEx string!
This little detail is such a ridiculously helpful UI hint. Erin, I want to give it a hug and a thank-you note!!!

First off: cultural appropriation is absolutely a thing! I have zero doubts about that, and no one paying attention to capitalism since at least… let's say Gershwin? as at least one cultural mile marker? can seriously claim otherwise.
Hokay. So.
I watched the finals of the Olympics breakdancing—but I missed the preliminary / qualifying battles. And therefore I totally missed the Australian who seems associated with all the discussion of cultural appropriation.
My question is just:
Did that particular dancer herself do something to propel her association with cultural appropriation, or is it more sort of a "the appropriation / control conversation absolutely needed to happen, and she's gotten caught up in it" scenario?

And as we know after Black Lives Matter organizing kicked off, reading alone will not be sufficient.
Again: it's not sufficient on its own, away from other people. But deprogramming ourselves from white supremacy & white settler colonial practices is a necessary part of doing the work.
So instead of accidentally being a nuisance in web browsers while feeling your feels—even if you're motivated by what feel like good intentions—maybe try to learn from other folks who've already traveled a bit down this road?
Learning to do a bit better is what I'm still working on myself.
We can do this.

There's really no need act as though you're more sophisticated and up-to-date about this phenomenon than an instance run by internet researchers
As people have been discussing for months & years, this isn't a simple "choose a better blocklist" scenario. It's a combination of social norms and technical things.
Mastodon-dot-social in particular has far less reliable moderation as a result of their open registration policies.
