My nephew just got a really well-paid summer job. His one qualification? He enjoys chess.
All he's got to do is watch YouTube videos by chess streamers and influencers, and write down every move of the games.
And if you've already guessed that it's for an AI company, then you're ahead of me. I guess they're done robbing authors of their intellectual property and are turning their attention to chess.

Here's a thought that I find freeing. Hopefully, it'll be the same for you.
No one on Mastodon is following *you*.¹ They follow a group of people which happens to include you.
That means you can toot about anything you like and as much or as little as you like. Boost whatever. Don't overthink it; no one is studying your timeline¹.
Thinking someone is following *you* is like a grain of rice thinking it's the reason I'm eating this huge bowl of jollof.

ME: The situation in Nigeria is so bad that, for 20 years, I've not felt safe going back to the city in which I grew up.
ALSO ME: I wonder why they have never filmed a series of Race Across The World in Nigeria. It's probably racism.

Lots of the southern states are out of bounds now too. Funnily, since you mention Port Harcourt, even though Rivers State is on the list, they make an exception saying PH is safe to visit. Must be because of all the oil wealth there.

The situation in Nigeria makes me sad.
The US has asked all non-essential embassy staff to leave the country, and has updated its travel advisory recommending that citizens must not go to 23 (of 36) states.
This includes the state where I grew up, Plateau State. It's a beautiful state that was, back then, a centre of tourism.
Amusingly, despite a number of recent riots and massacres, it hasn't updated the state motto: Home of Peace and Tourism.

I'm Black. I love being Black. I take pride in the achievements of other Black people
But being Black is different from all my other identities: Nigerian, British, woke, F1 fan.
Being Black is not an identity I picked for myself or inherited by birth, it's one that was given to me by people who hate me (and those who look like me). I'm Black today cos 400 years ago someone wanted to enslave my ancestors.

Sometimes little things niggle way more than they're supposed to.
There's a TV show called Ellis about a cop who drives to small English towns when there's been a murder to solve the crime. Often the local cops aren't welcoming. They think they don't need the help.
Ellis is a Black woman
There was a review in The Independent that condemned the show for "identity politics" even tho the show almost never mentions race or gender.
Read the review a week ago but I'm still cross

One of the worst things about these modern times is that we've all lost sight of what's important. Another example of people treating racism like a 3-act drama.
Act 1: A brown Muslim Londoner is one of a number of people invited to be part of a Welcome to London campaign.
Act 2: He receives racist abuse from thousands of people, reducing him to tears.
Act 3: He invites the trolls to his store for free dates. A handful (𝚗̲𝚘̲𝚝̲ thousands) apologise.
Cue warm, fuzzy, triumphant article. Cos I guess this means racism is now over.

It really annoys me that people (especially white people) think that racism has to have a 3 act structure.
Act 1: A racist act occurs. (In this case, a Benfica player racially abused Vinicius Jr after Vini scored a goal and danced in celebration.)
Act 2: Uproar. Racism! Not in this day and age! Boo!
Act 3: Vinicius Jr scores against Benfica again in the return game and dances again. Everyone celebrates. And racism is fixed forever. The end.

Sometimes it seems that what makes the news is dictated by what'll make a viral tweet. Reform can pledge to deport tens of thousands of black and brown Brits and no one cares; but if they'd said they'll deport one Black person - say Lenny Henry or Idris Elba - we'll all be talking about it for weeks. Celebrity is what counts.

people are always deceived by clips. They're given a 30 second clip that comes with the headline LISTEN TO THIS MAN SHOUT THE N-WORD - and so of course it's as clear as day. Makes it impossible for them to imagine a stressed, overworked producer listening to a 6 hour stream and missing those 3 seconds.

2026-02-25 08:00:02 UTC

I've always felt that every group, especially minority groups, only has so much leeway to air their issues.
And that's why I can't get animated about the N-word at the Baftas.
It must have been a horrible, horrible moment for those actors. But I accept that the man said the word, not because he's a racist, but because his Tourette's recognised that that was the worst thing to say at that moment.
I also accept that the BBC fucked up by not bleeping it. But it's most likely just human error.

To my English ears, people from France and French-speaking West Africa (3,000 miles apart) have pretty much the same accent. And so do people from Portugal and people from Brazil (4,500 miles apart). And so do people from Spain and people from Mexico (5,600 miles).
But people from Manchester and Liverpool (a measly 30 miles apart)? Nah, they sound completely different!

Filling out my self assessment tax return, and here's one of the questions:
'Have you used one or more tax avoidance schemes?'
Is this how the HMRC plans to catch those sneaky billionaires?

I don't deserve this.
So a few months ago I watched an 18+ movie on Amazon Prime Video, but because I'm normal I never really use Prime Video. In fact the next time I logged in was yesterday. We'd had a huge early Christmas meal and the whole larger family was sat around the TV in a food coma.
"Let's watch Red One on Prime," someone said. So I logged in...
... And the whole home screen is full of recommendations for my next watch - and every one is porn.

I was chatting with a Black friend of Jamaican heritage. She was appalled that a Nigerian she'd met knew next to nothing about slavery.
It's Black history! she said.
It's *your* history, I explained.
For Africans that sad story ended when the ships left the shore. Our schools teach us about the impact of that devastation, not what happened on the other coast.
Black history is not one thing. It's not MLK.
It's also Songhai and Benin. Which they don't teach here

I'm curious as to how typical my family and I are compared to other people living in modern rich countries. Would you mind answering the following questions?
How many days in a typical week would you eat at least 1 home cooked meal?

I'm listening to a podcast (Criminal, since you ask) and in it a policeman says that most people don't know their car's licence plate number.
Really? Surely not.
Do you know your licence plate number?

To all the Brits¹, Europeans, Australians, Japanese and Koreans who are outraged at the new ridiculous requirements for visiting the US, I have one simple question:
What the fuck do you think YOUR country has been demanding from potential African visitors for years?
_____
¹ Including me. I am a hypocrite.

Hate to say this, but America is now fully an evil country.¹
We've entered the stage where the history books will be asking what the good citizens were doing while all of this was going on.
_____
¹ Some will argue that it always has been evil. But at least it often tried to disguise it.

Congratulations Lando Norris on becoming the #F1 World Champion.
It's inspirational, watching a young man make it to the top of the world from a humble beginning as the son of a ... lemme check ... multimillionaire.

My 11 year old son wets the bed. As his parent, it's a pain in the arse. But I try not to make him feel bad about it, cos I know that it's partly genetic, passed from father to son. I used to wet the bed too, and I've told him so.
Here's the strange thing. Now that he's 11, he rarely wets the bed. The only exception is at the change of the seasons. Now that we're going from autumn to winter, he's bedwetting again. Then it'll stop till winter to spring. And then spring to summer.
Why's that?

2025-12-04 13:57:45 UTC

A parent who was worried about their daughter mixing with trans children sued the Girls Guides which is why the organisation no longer accepts trans kids.
A baker went to court because they did not want to make a cake for a gay couple.
You know what? I wish the media would stop tolerating this lie. No, it's not "a parent" or "a baker". It's well-funded lobby groups who scour the press looking for an individual use as a puppet for a fight they want to have.
PS: This is also true of Rosa Parks

2025-12-03 23:46:50 UTC

This really pisses me off.
As a cis male I cannot claim to understand what it feels like to be a cis-woman or a trans woman, but even I can see that this is petty and wrong.
To be fair, I am not angry at the Womens Institute or the Girls Guide. Both organisations seem very apologetic; the choice has been taken away from them by the law.

I value politeness.
I know how that sounds. It sounds centrist; it's the opinion of a person who is happy with the status quo.
But I genuinely believe that change - even radical change - can only be achieved with politeness (plus insistence, of course).
I hate that we've lost politeness from today's politics. If I was American, I *would* like to discuss immigration with Trump. But when he is so rude about Somalis how can any discussion take place?
(And Trump's not the only one doing it.)

Two times over the past week, white women have commented to me about how articulate I am.
THINGS TO NOTE:
1. I *am* very articulate.
2. I was being articulate at the time.
3. I do not think they are aware of the racist stereotype.

What parts of your life do you not post about - not because of privacy or decency or anything like that, but just because it doesn't align with your online 'brand'. To qualify, it obviously has to be something that other people post a lot about.

In the movie Eyes Wide Shut, did Tom Cruise take his clothes off? I'm curious, but not curious enough to rewatch the film, since I remember it not being great.
Cruise strikes me as someone who might be a bit of a prude. I can't imagine him getting naked on film.
And now that I've asked the question, I'm going to stop wondering about it 🙂

One thing that I hate about the immigration debate in the West is the idea of the "useful immigrant". We pillage the developing world for its doctors and nurses, but try to leave everyone else there to die in ill health.
I just heard of something Canada is doing that is, maybe, a good halfway house. Apparently it has a deal with The Philippines to train nurses in that country in the expectation that some will move to Canada while some stay behind.

This being Mastodon there's a good chance that I like AI more than you do. That's OK.
I was recently at a meeting in which senior mgmt asked us to put cash figures on how much AI would save the business.
My position: AI, at this point, won't save us any money - but we should adopt it nonetheless.
Someone else said: there's a task that we don't currently do cos it costs £5m, but with AI it'll only cost £3m.
"And how much profit will it make?"
"No profit - but we're saving £2m!"
🤦🏿‍♂️

Being part of an institution is the best way to watch demographic change.
25 years ago I was the only young person in my church in my midsize English town, surrounded by old people. And then, in 2004, Blair let in the Poles and Romanians, and my church was flooded with young families and the sound of children laughing.
Then Brexit, and the youth drained out of the pews again. Fast.
Yesterday, my priest told me there are plans to shut churches down.

If ever you wanted to know how much capitalism warps our humanity, consider this: Around 800,000 people in the UK are so sick that they cannot work. And instead of being described as a health crisis, it's being called an economic crisis.

Whenever a Muslim anywhere on earth commits an atrocity, ordinary Muslims everywhere are asked to explain or denounce the action.
Now that Donald Trump is tweeting about wanting to protect his "cherished Christians", does that mean the same rules apply?
Cos I really want to know what he's going to do about the fucker who's been stealing my butter from the office fridge.

I think that possibly because I live in my safe, reasonably well off world, I sometimes forget that bad things can be blunt too, and not just subtle.
In the book, the white characters throw around the N-word really casually.

Just finished the audiobook of The Trees by Percival Everett. It's really good - witty, pacy, and unflinchingly brutal.
It's set in Trump's America, and is about race.
Call me naive, but while I knew that systemic racism exists, and I knew that white rap fans sometimes say nigga, and I knew that cops get triggerhappy around Black men, I kinda thought that the in-your-face, 1960s-style racism was mostly a thing of the past. This book taught me that it isn't.

Nigeria has problems. We all remember the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls & Boko Haram. These days, we talk about 'bandits' - nomadic marauders who sweep into villages at night, killing.
Yes, the perpetrators are often Muslim, and the victims sometimes Christian.
But I don't think it's about religion at all. It's climate change.
The Sahara is eating up northern Nigeria, forcing its people further & further south. Clashes with southerners are inevitable. Their differing religions are incidental
