Emotional garbage.
Just watched a video from a free cleaning channel-- and he explained how bad the burnout is for nearly everyone in this work.
And no. NOT because any of the houses they cleaned got dirty again... but because of the relentless streams of EMOTIONAL garbage that get dumped on them every single damned day by the sorts of people who feel some malicious urge to sneer at them how those houses are just going to get dirty again, and how "lazy slobs" aren't worth helping.
Why is it, that being too depressed/hurt/etc to clean up your house, losing control of the situation and getting overwhelmed is stigmatized with RELENTLESS DISGUST...
But heaping emotional abuse on people who are already down, and further abusing anyone who actually tries to help them, is not infinitely worse? That shit can actually kill.
Anyone who actually enjoys cleaning, and feels the instinct to help others with this powerful mutual aid, is precious and glorious. Please uplift them, donate to them, and defend them.
Emotional garbage is incredibly toxic. If we figure out how to clean THAT up, the whole world can head in new directions.

I've been wanting to cut down more on animal products and trying to figure out other protein sources and I'm really curious if there could be a way to grow the yeast like you're gonna do nutritional yeast but then change gears and make it bread but like, proteiny bread. Only stuff I can find just talks about adding the already processed nootch to dough, no discussion of s hybrid process at all (not even to say why it wouldn't work).
I really gotta find people around here to nerd about this stuff with.

Even if it's not totally dead, being mostly dead can slow things down very much!
I've been doing a bunch of online digging and wondering what the differences are between the microbes used for different stuff-- I used ginger for my latest 2nd ferment of water kefir but like does that make it ginger beer? But I guess ginger beer has its own starter. Would that get alcoholic too if left to run long enough?
The there's tempeh, and kombucha, and kimchi etc-- but apparently you're supposed to keep things far away from each other if you're trying more than one at once.
And if nutritional yeast is the same species as baking yeast does that mean a person could make high protein bread if it was prepared a certain way? Can't find ANY info on that at all.
And how long does it take the critters to eat down the sugar content? I so wish I knew somebody with a lab to test nutritional content...
The botshit and search enshittification is making it hard to find good info.

So I need to study up a bit on this issue, if I'm going to be out here advocating.
At the table, I learned that California Forever is spending $2 million dollars PER WEEK on those goddamn ads.
I also learned that they're suing the farmers who have refused to sell their land. Suing them under fuckin RICO, of all things! That's such a dick move right there it should tell everyone exactly what kind of neighbors they'll be.
They intend to increase the population of the county by about 400k-- DOUBLING it. This is nothing less than a hostile takeover. I got a message from the person who runs the native plant nursery where I volunteer.
She said they were doing a local tabling event, but one of the other volunteers called off at the last minute and asked if I could help.
I walked right past the table twice without realizing it.
No plants at all. No nursery sign. The table was for something else entirely!
"...Wait, so what are we doing??"
"We're a group against the California Forever project in east Solano."
OH. "Cool! I can do this, too!" And I plopped my butt down and proceeded to hang out with some very lovely people and speak with interested members of the public-- of which there were quite a few.
(This one aggressively bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young man stopped by and started passing out business cards. I could smell the smarm coming off him from about 30ft away, and sure enough, dude is from the other side and for some reason wanting to say hello all friendly. That's cute. Run along now, smarmy jackass...)
It's funny, because I'd never brought up politics at the plant nursery. I kinda expect the gardening scene to have a lot of somewhat affluent liberals who might go all Invasion of the Bodysnatchers howl on me if they realize there's a wild-eyed radical in their midst so I keep my views on the back burner and just focus on the plants until I get to know people better.
But then I find myself sitting alongside a therapist who's also an environmentalist and union organizer, and on the other side a science teacher who wants us to read Ministry for the Future, and this is a promising start.

Potting soil!
Does anyone know of any resources that talk about DIY potting soil?
Not, "purchase large bags of unsustainable materials created through energy intensive processes and shipped long distances, then mix them in X proportions" DIY potting soil. Which is the ONLY kind I seem to be able to find now that searching is borked.
I mean, are there recipes, methods of composting, techniques to PRODUCE stuff with the proper characteristics?
At the community garden we've been sifting what's small enough out of the compost heap and just kinda using that, but comparing the results to what's happening at the school farm greenhouse with fresh bags of commercial stuff is a pretty stark example of how important it is to have a proper potting mix, if you want cuttings to successfully take, or for seedlings to germinate well.
Peat moss is NOT sustainable yet everyone still seems to be using it, even people who really should know better. Almost all the online tutorials list it first thing. The alternatives most commonly mentioned are coco coir and rice hulls, which are better but if a person doesn't have access to supplies of that type, what's the solution? What do we grow and how do we break it down to the consistency we want?
Then there's the ubiquity of perlite and vermiculite (both of which have to be mined and then baked in industrial ovens, and both of which are not renewable resources). Perlite crumbles to sand so darned fast, too. And you don't want to breathe the powder kicked up when you dig in it.
There's got to be other ways to do this.

Aquaponics is when you hook up a fish farm to a hydroponic farm, and use the waste from the fish to feed crops which in turn clean the water for the fish, so it's a closed recirculating system that doesn't put waste into the environment (apart from what's generated to build the equipment and facility of course).
Sounds like this was just a regular fish farm using a spring, with the overflow carrying waste out into the local watershed.

Recently watched a video from a biologist talking about salmon, wild vs farmed etc. Her conclusion at the end was, it's basically all destructive, just don't eat it.

As for sensible and effective problem solving... You might want to read up on the labor movement, for a start. Civil rights, suffrage, etc etc, all pushed forward by massive protests that faced real bloodshed. Arguably NO major, heavy-duty change in history has happened WITHOUT major protests.
