The types of people who are most likely to succeed in a cruel society without safety nets (predatory, exploitative) are the same types of people who crave a life where they are waited upon hand and foot while they laze around indulging hedonistic urges and do nothing useful. They expect everyone else to have the same goals they do-- it's very difficult for them to even to imagine positive intrinsic motivations.

The idea of WANTING to accomplish something useful, for a sense of satisfaction and pride and to help those around you and make the world a better place, is alien to them.

Most of them probably grew up without nurturing encouragement, and only understand the motivation of escaping things they dislike: without threat of punishment, why would anyone ever do anything but sit around all day?
