Paatuneena fillarikommunistina usein mietin, että se, mitä autoilijat oikeasti kaipaavat, on pyörä.
Ajoneuvo, jonka voi parkkeerata helposti käytännössä minne tahansa, joka ei ruuhkaudu, vaikka niitä olisi kuinka paljon samalla reitillä ja jonka polttoainetta on aina helposti ja verrattain huokeasti saatavilla.
Että jos autosta toivoo välinettä vapauteen, niin voi pojat, kokeilisivat fillaria!

There's also some irony in how the instructor is very clear that LLMs are bad at the thing they themselves are an expert on, because the models make mistakes and are not infallible.
Yet their prime use case for using LLMs is to "learn new things". Where the models naturally relay only factual and relevant information.
Like, obviously there are shades of grey here! You CAN learn a lot with LLMs (if you disregard ethics). But dang, it's scary to see critical thinking crumble so fast.

Once again sitting in a general staff training session for adopting LLMs in the workplace.
You'd think the presentations and speeches in these sorts of events would be pretty good if they're indeed made with the help of these new supertools they advocate.
But, like, they're mostly bland, without substance, and frankly kinda crap? Not actually demonstrating anything useful and instead peddling vague talking points.
I wonder why that is.

Teaching a kid to read or swim or ride a bike is truly one of the great joys of life.
You get to give someone the gift of a whole new world! Once they learn the skill they can just... go and be in a totally new environment. Traverse distances and encounter things they couldn't before.
It's like you just made the world a better place not just for the kid but for the rest of humanity too.

Just juttelin muutaman hoitotyötä tekevän kanssa. Yksityisellä ilmeisesti on jo käytössä automatisoitu muistiinpanojen tekeminen. Mikä kuulemma on aivan hanurista kaikista ilmeisistä syistä, mutta myös siksi, että ne muistiinpanot on tärkeä osa työprosessia! Niitä tehdessä ja kirjatessa asiantuntija prosessoi tilannetta.
Tämän työn automatisointi poistaa hoitotyön ketjusta yhden kriittisen vaiheen, joka on turha vain niille, jotka eivät sitä ymmärrä.

Tai siis jotenkin tuntuu, että fasistien käsittely niin mediassa kuin yhteiskunnassakin kilpistyy jatkuvasti siihen, että annetaan ihmisten tehdä rasistista paskaa kunhan ne sanoo, etteivät ole rasisteja.

Joskus mietin, että fasistiseen toimintaan pitäisi suhtautua päiväkotisäännöillä.
Eli ei niin, että uskotaan heti, kun ihminen sanoo, että räikeän antisosiaalinen paska on itse asiassa normaalin toiminnan rajoissa (ns. "Orpon moraalinen turvariepu -metodi").
Vaan niin, että todetaan, että sä voit sanoa, että antisosiaalinen paskasi on normaalia, mutta ei se ole, joten et pääse leikkimään parkkitalolla ennen kuin olet pyytänyt anteeksi ja lopettanut perseilyn.

Just to be clear about how the recent international racism scandal in the Finnish parliament has been dealt with: It hasn't.
The prime minister issued an apology but the racist MPs and their party have shown zero remorse.
In fact, this is a very common pattern in contemporary Finnish politics. The racist party is openly racist but denies it. The leading coalition party apologizes for them but lets them carry on, and in so doing legitimizes their racist behaviour.

Folks, the sound you hear is me turning to dust as I realize many not-even-young-anymore people view blogging as an inherently commercial practice: something you do on closed, ad-supported or subscription-based platforms, and also something that often involves product placement or other paid or sponsored content.

I've recently come across comments about LLMs increasing workplace efficiency in e.g. coding.*
All I need to know about AI at the workplace is the fact that it is toted as means of increasing profits and squeezing more labour out of workers.
If efficiency is improving, why not switch to a 4-day workweek and still be more productive than before but ALSO reap the benefits of a happier and healthier staff?

Ajattelin, että ehkä 4-vuotias on vielä liian pieni aggressiiviselle liikennetaistelulle, mutta varmaan 5-vuotiaasta alkaen täytyy jo alkaa opettaa, mihin kohtaan bemarin kattoa voi paukauttaa, jotta saa kuskin huomion, mutta ehtii vielä karkuun ennen kuin se tappaa.
Ei lapsi tietysti silloin vielä sinne katolle ylety, mutta osaapahan läiskiä sitten, kun kasvaa. Jos ei jää sitä ennen auton alle saatana koulun portilla.

On keltanokkalippikset, on liikenneturvakampanjat, on hyvää tarkoittavat ihmiset somessa muistuttamassa pienistä tienkäyttäjistä.
Ja silti on autoilija, aamukiire ja armoton perseily koulun portilla.
Ei saatana voi olla tämmöistä, että 4-vuotias juuri pyöräilemään oppinut joutuu koulua – painotan, KOULUA – ohittaessaan tilanteeseen, jossa väistämme jalkakäytävällä peruuttelevaa autoa vain joutuaksemme nokakkain TOISEN jalkakäytävälle parkkeeratun auton kanssa.

Kohtaan työssäni enenevissä määrin puhetta tekoälystä. Usein testaan "tekoäly työpaikoilla"-henkisten tekstien sävyä ja mielekkyyttä vaihtamalla tekoälyn tilalle pirin.
Jos teksti kuulostaa aivan yhtä uskottavalta pirillä, se ei oikeastaan kerro myöskään tekoälystä juuri mitään kiinnostavaa.
Molemmat ovat keinoja lisätä työtehoa tarkkuuden ja eettisyyden kustannuksella.

Hieman kieli poskessa: ratkaisin ongelman siirtymällä lopulta pelaamaan muita kuin D&D-johdannaisia roolipelejä, ja syleilin vähemmän pelimäistä pelaamista.
Mutta vakavammin: pulaan joutuminen on roolipelaamisen ydintä. Epäonnistumisen tulisi olla palkitsevaa! Ehkä ansan voi virittää uudelleen ja käyttää hyödyksi. Tai sieltä voi löytää edellisen uhrin jäämistöä. Mitä vain mikä hieman sotkee tiukkaa onnistuminen–epäonnistuminen-jakoa. Hahmot ovat aina cool, vaikka putoaisivat kuoppaan!

Did your 2nd gen #Chromecast brick yesterday? So did everyone else's!
There's a pretty solid explanation about what happened on reddit, but basically a certificate seems to have expired and updating it has a domino effect affecting many other Google product updates as well.
If Google wills, bricked Chromecasts should start working soon-ish, but this is, once again, a sad reminder that even if you buy hardware you don't necessarily actually own it nowadays.

And just to reiterate: people can be enthusiastic and full of ideas with or without AI! Thats great! I love it! It's when the ideas are not useful for the topic at hand but nevertheless _sound very clever_ and as such their usefulness is difficult to asses. That's when we get into all kinds of problems.
I'm all for hyperactive pitching – even bad hyperactive pitching! But no need to directly involve the Large Language Model in that. Or if you do, tell so right from the start!

If everyone is already working at close to full capacity, it doesn't help to rush in with overachieving mediocrity. I'd take one brilliant (and realistically doable) idea over a buffet of kind-of-ehhs any day! This method of "increasing productivity" quantitatively but not qualitatively is bonkers! 5/6

That person is, of course, feeding prompts into ChatGPT (or equivalent) and passing off the results as their own takes. And, look, generative AI is good enough to make sort of passable suggestions. But when you pull from ChatGPT which has NO DATA on your organization's ability to follow up on ideas, and bring with you a torrent of new actionable (but pretty mid) ideas, it only floods the discussion and bogs down everything. 4/6

In a meeting where everyone is pitching ideas or ways of proceeding with something, you notice someone is being extra prolific. Like, sudden bursts of highly thought out responses. Not just reacting to proposed ideas but proposing like 5 new ideas and a few new angles that tangentially touches upon what you're discussing. 2/6

No, Word, I most certainly do not want to open a file my colleague opened three hours ago. In fact, there probably are an entirety of zero use cases where I would like to open a file solely on the basis of when my coworker edited it.
I'm interested in the three files I opened this morning, edited throughout the day, and closed one hour ago.
You know, those same files that I now apparently must dig from somewhere underneath these "convenient" and prominently displayed cloud file suggestions.

Old dude hurtled around the corner in his massive SUV, hit the brakes when he saw I was going to cross the road, and impatiently waved me to move along.
I don't know, man. In the span of three seconds he not only drove way too fast into a blind corner, almost plowed over a pedestrian that was already stepping onto the zebra crossing AND impatiently signaled either that the pedestrian should hurry the fuck up or that it's now safe to cross since his two-ton tank of a car has stopped.
