I think the Rust ecosystem's choice for a relatively useless standard library is an overreaction to the "dead batteries" argument some folks have in the Python space.

(That is, "the standard library is where things go to die" became a trope in some circles of the Python community. I disagree with this premise, but a lot of those people influenced Rust fairly early on.)
