Love this! Strong Tom Scott vibes, right down to the red shirt — was that a deliberate homage or a happy accident?

You can measure your skill at DIY house projects by the ratio of visits to the hardware store against days of work:
- no visits: god tier
- less than one visit per day: excellent, you know what you’re doing
- 1 visit / day: average
- more than 1 visit / day: reconsider your life choices

I’m far from convinced that this is actually possible. It’s certainly not now — and I’m not talking about models. Testing and verification tools are nowhere near where they’d need to be, regardless of model quality. Today, code quality DOES still matter; even the best-case version of agentic engineering can’t produce code that’ll never require maintenance. But I can see a possible future where code quality might not matter, or will matter a lot less, and that’s FASCINATING. (3/3)

2026-04-02 14:36:18 UTC

Look this isn’t at all a defense of slop code, but it has me thinking — how much does code quality matter, and why?
It’s maintenance, right? We care about readability because we know we’ll have to make changes, fix bugs, etc.
But so … imagine a codebase that’s magically bug-free and feature-complete. (I’m aware this is a strawman - that’s the point, it’s a thought experiment.) Does it matter if this codebase is well-written? I’m not sure it does! (1/3)

Code quality has always been ONE factor; it’s never been always the most important. Eg we often accept complex internals as the price for a clean external API; and we all write sloppy code for one-offs, prototypes, etc. So part of me accepts the “code quality doesn’t matter” argument. I can see a vision of agentic engineering with systems that prove correctness; if an agent produces code that is provably correct, maybe the quality really doesn’t matter! (2/3)

We put a huge emphasis on docs from day 1. Our policy has always been that new code can’t be merged unless it includes docs — we’ve held up major features because the docs weren’t done/good. That’s a virtuous cycle: good docs attract contributors who value good docs. So yeah it’s super intentional, and always nice to hear from someone that it seems to be working :)

Light and warm I can help with — that’s a backpacking quilt! Ultralight fabrics and high-quality down make for a ton of warmth with shockingly little weight: my lightest quilt weighs 430 grams (just under 1 lb) and keeps me warm down to freezing.
Dunno about the other side of the equation — but a heavy-and-cool blanket sounds AMAZING, I’d use one in the summer if it exists!

For folks who’re interested in 3d printing whistles: https://www.printables.com/model/417238-loudest-emergency-whistle is the best I’ve found.
They’ve been tested on canyoneering trips — we use whistles to communicate over the sound of waterfalls; nothing else is piercing enough to cut through the thunder. These work as well as the gold standard Fox 40 Classic.
I print it florescent orange PLA, with an 0.6mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height, and make lanyards out of orange paracord.

This is super important and not super well-known. A single dose of Epi is rarely enough to permanently treat anaphylaxis; the whole point is to keep you alive until an ambulance arrives or you can get to the ER.
They come in two-packs to give you more time — but the really important lesson is that if you need to use an EpiPen you should immediately call 911 or go to the ER (don’t drive! have someone drive you!) where you can get definitive care. https://xoxo.zone/@lazerwalker/115561731102351527

The “default” working model for open source projects (and some small/medium businesses) is working in public: you don’t need permission to contribute, you can just show up.
This works surprisingly well much of the time … but sometimes it doesn’t. When it doesn’t, people often retreat into working in private, with no mechanism for broader involvement.
This is a mistake! There is a middle ground, in between public and private, with the benefits of both: https://jacobian.org/2025/oct/18/working-in-between-public-and-private/

A tremendously satisfying milestone: done with the framing! (I’m counting the purlins as part of roofing.)
It’s really surprising how big a difference the diagonal bracing makes, especially on the open front and right hand side. The whole structure was disconcertingly wobbly without them, but once they were all up it’s now solid as a rock. Hexagons may be the bestagons but don’t sleep on triangles.

Got nearly all of the rafters done today, just a couple left. Not hard, but annoying - marking and cutting each one, multiple trips up and down the ladder, just annoying and fiddly. Should be able to wrap them up tomorrow and get to work on the final bracing and framing details.

Marking and cutting the birdsmouth was actually really easy: no measuring, just put the rafter in position and a speed square to draw the vertical line, then the heel of the square to offset the horizontal. I was feeling all good about myself …
Until I tested the first cut rafter against the other side and discovered I’m 1” off on the other side. I’m going to have to mark and cut out each rafter individually. (Maybe every 2-3 can be the same.)
Frustrating, but not a huge mistake, oh well.

Nearly every project turns into an excuse to buy new tools — and for this project that tool was this new compressor. My existing compressor is huge and trips the over current protection on the EcoFlow. This building is far from power, and I really wanted to be able to use the framing nailer, it just saves so much time.
I’m pretty thrilled with the compressor. It’s powerful enough to keep up with the framing nailer, and I can’t believe how quiet it is; I’ve heard louder air conditioners!

And with that, most of the framing is done. There’s some additional bracing I need to add later, hence the remaining temporary braces, but some of that will attach to the rafters, so I need to tackle rafters next.
I decided to add some structural screws into the rafter support beams front and back. Nails are almost certainly enough, but the extra few bucks to overbuild this part seems worth it.

Working on this project alone requires some strategy. A couple of things that have been super helpful:
(1) I went out last night with the laser and created a level reference line on all posts. Now I don’t need to check level on boards - I can just measure the same distance from reference on each post and be good.
(2) I made this little board hook jigs to hold the other end of boards - without that holding up a 20’ 2x4 would be impossible.

Got the posts stood up. I had to wait for a long block of uninterrupted time: this step isn’t something I wanted to do incrementally. The first few posts are very unstable, even with the temporary diagonal bracing, but the whole thing gets more and more stable as each post goes up and gets braced to its neighbors. Then, I went around and tweaked each post until was as close to plumb as possible. The temporary bracing will hold everything sturdy until the real framing goes up.

You may already be aware that dimensional lumber is a lie — a 2x4 for example is 1½” x 3½”.
But you may not have known that there are different standards for true dimensions, which is why I have to shave ¼” off my 6x6 post (really 5¾”) so that it fits into my 6x6 bracket (really 5½”).
That’s because I bought 6x6 “rough sawn”, but my brackets are designed for 6x6 “construction lumber”. Both are named “6x6”, neither is actually 6” square, each has different true dimensions.

Confusingly, the final width is somehow exactly 3” less than my CAD model and drawings. I must have miscalculated or mis-measured something without realizing it, but luckily I did so consistently (whew), and 19’ 9” wide will be just fine. Being over would have been a fairly major disaster since I ordered a bunch of lumber in 20’ lengths — dodged a bullet there.

Post bases are in. I did this the “wrong” way in that a pro would use bases that get set into wet concrete. But I was concerned about trying to do too many things at once, so I used anchors drilled into the dry concrete. This also gave me a final chance at adjustment - which I needed to get tue final layout square.
This is a cool milestone: I can finally take down the layout boards - with the bases in, there’s no more adjustment, the building is gonna be HERE.

How much of a pain is setting up some sort of TSDB (Influx? Grafana?) for my Home Assistant install? Mostly I want better long-term data visualization and analysis of things like temp, water and electricity usage, etc. HA has rudimentary charts, but I’m looking for something better. Metrics-based alerting would be nice too. But I don’t want to spend more than a couple hours AT MOST setting this up. Any pointers?

I’m back to working on the run-in shelter this week.
Here’s all the lumber I’ll need for the project. I ordered it from our local building supply, and they delivered it for free within just a couple hours — super nice.
Next up: post bases. The piers are off by an inch or so here and there, which I planned compensate for because I’m using drilled anchors. But I’ll wait for my wife to get home to do that: she doesn’t make the silly math mistakes I do, and precise layout is way easier with two.

It’s common to say that “people suck at thinking about risk” — certainly it’s something that I’ve said often. And there are tons of examples of how our intuitive sense of risk goes wrong.
But… what if we thought differently? What if, instead, we started from an assumption that people’s risk assessments are accurate _for them_? What are the implications of thinking this way?

I guess the MudMixer I rented was busted, because the flow control was more like a rough suggestion than actual control 🤷🏻‍♂️
So I did 4 (of 6) posts mixing and pouring by hand and — all done! It’s certainly harder physically, but way less stressful since you can pause at any point without worrying about concrete setting up inside an expensive machine. With only 17 bags of concrete I’d probably all by hand next time.
This shot shows how sloped the site is: the piers are level to within 1/8”.

I'm building a run-in shed for the horses, and for the first time in my building-things life, I fully modeled it in CAD. Originally I did this so I'd have an accurate cut list for ordering lumber and metal, but it's been WAY more useful than that. Viewing just specific parts multiple angles; custom drawings of specific layouts, even using analysis tools to figure out how much concrete I need. Super cool, I'm a convert.

OK, I finally have to buy a welder and learn to weld. The task is repairing my flail mower; the part I need to weld is approx 1/4” steel plate. I’m not interested in pretty welds, I just need to make it strong. I think I want either stick or flux core wire — I don’t want to fuck with gas. I have 240v available but I’d need to wire up a new outlet, so I’d prefer 120v if possible.
I’d appreciate recommendations for a starter welder and basic safety kit! Would love to stay under, say, $500.

If it makes you feel any better, this idea that “you have to love the process” is by no means universal. One of the most frustrating parts of running an open source foundation is seeing the disconnect between what companies _say_ about their support for open source and what they actually _do_.
So many of them, it seems, are more interested in being _seen_ as supporting open source than they are actually providing support. It's optics, not altruism.

I think organizations like the DSF and PSF who want to be global communities need to think long and hard if we want to continue having our primary events in the US. It’s not an easy for so many reasons, but it’s one we need to start having.

2025-05-15 20:59:53 UTC

Also, any #pyconus runners need to do a long run this weekend? I’m looking to do 16 miles at around a 10-12 minute pace on Saturday morning and would love some company for some/all of it.

2025-05-15 20:28:46 UTC

On my way to #pyconus! I don’t get in til midnight local time tonight, so see folks tomorrow. I’ll be spending most of my time at the #django booth, so stop by if you want to say hi.

Do I know anyone who’s worked for or has intimate knowledge of the US 911 system?
I’m trying to confirm something: that E911 is nationally linked, and thus even if the emergency you’re calling about is far away, you should still simply call 911 (vs, trying to find a loc police/fire/rescue number in the area you’re calling about).
I’ve heard this from a few SAR and USFS folks, eg that people should simply call 911 instead of the park service about an overdue hiker, even from states away.

“We took our work seriously, but not ourselves” is such a perfect distillation of the 18F ethos. When we were successful (and we succeeded a lot) it was because we cared deeply, sincerely about others, and very little about ourselves and our egos. (When we failed, it was almost always because of ego.)
No wonder Trump had to kill it: that’s the precise opposite of the MAGA ethos, and 18F’s successs put the lie to the idea that compassion is weakness. https://toot.darkcooger.net/@mgwalker/114478573962781161

I got angry earlier this week about someone not following the usual process for reporting security issues in open source projects. So I decided to do something about it and wrote a guide on how to do it right:
https://jacobian.org/2025/mar/27/reporting-security-issues-in-oss/
This isn't at all novel territory, there are other (good) guides out there. And it's not gonna help people who can't be bothered. But if it helps just a couple well-intentioned folks do the right thing, that'll make me happy.

A lot of tech people, particularly more junior folks, are looking for jobs right now. A short but important note for them: newcomers should generally ignore career advice from people who've been in the field longer than 10 or 15 years.
The way the industry treats us is so dramatically different from the way it treats newcomers that most advice is just flat out wrong.

If you have a manager resume that lists specific accomplishments, and you'd be OK with me anonymized bits in a post like that, please email me your resume? jacob at jacobian dot org.

I really really struggle with this one personally - to the point Jay that your post was actually kinda painful to read (because it’s saying true things, not because it’s hurtful!)
I can clearly see ways in which I’m holding the Django community back, and maybe I need to dip. But I also really do believe that I’m doing this that nobody else can or will do. Is that belief just ego? How would I know when the balance tips? I find this super hard to think about.

Yes, DSF Office Hours are back again this Wednesday at 6PM UTC. Wdjango #dsfwly-elected Board, Steering Council elections coming up, and some ongoing conversations about Trac, Django's Security Team, fundraising, and more — so I imagine we'll talk about some of this. But whatever you want to talk about or work on, as long as it's DSF-related, c'mon by.
Message me (or any other board member) for joining info.
Hope to see you there!

If you’ve been wondering what’s been going on with Django’s steering council, and/or with technical governance more generally, we’ve tried to explain, put it in context, and lay out what’s happening next. If you care about Django’s future please take a minute to read this:

I was reminded today of an oldie but a goodie: the “3-2-1 rule” for data backups. For any critical data you should have:
- 3 copies
- on 2 different forms of media
- with at least 1 copy being off-site
Not a hard and fast rule (this rule dates back to when “two forms of media” implied “disks and tapes”), but a really good starting point still.

is that on 24/7 or does it power down when you’re not driving/camping?
I’m noodling on something similar (though smaller) for my teardrop, but the battery pack is fairly small and I’m a bit worried about draining them if I’m camping without sun for several days (a common-enough scenario here)

2024-10-31 21:59:48 UTC

Ok keyboard enthusiasts I could use some help: I have a Keychron K1, with brown switches. I’m like 80% happy with it but looking around to see if I can hit 90 or 100%.
Problem 1 is the keys are a bit too stiff and clicky — I think that’s easily solved by going to red switches, right?
Problem 2 is that even the low-profile K1 isn’t low-profile enough, I’d like even thinner keys. Not quite MacBook-thin, but maybe halfway between there and the K1.
Does such a keeb exist?

this one's a little bit more complex, mostly because it's _not_ something we discussed specifically, so it's not quite the same as the gap between intent and documentation. I think I agree it's the right move, but it's probably not something I should change unilaterally, should probably discuss it worth the board.

I'm gonna fix this right now. The intent always was that contributions to the broader Django ecosystem — which absolutely include Python — would qualify someone for membership. We in fact explicitly discussed weather core Python devs would qualify and determined yes. So it's 100% an unclear documentation problem which I will go fix right now.

There’s a certain kind of person who excels at staying just on this side of any bright lines in a community code of conduct, but nevertheless manages to be so unpleasant as to drive other people away. I don’t have any good ideas about how to deal with those people, especially if they get into a position of power.
