I don't recommend either until the hardware comes down. People will spend many thousands running open models to save single-digit dollars a month, which might make them happier.
I switched from a MBP to a Mac Studio because it was time to upgrade so going with more RAM wasn't a huge ask at the time.

If you are running a Mac this is a little easier, btw because of the unified bus. A Mac shares the bus and RAM across the GPU and CPU, which makes running small and medium-sized models both performant and possible with Ollama.
These models are GPU and RAM hungry between the model size and the context size.

Disney+ must have taken some inspiration from AWS and Google for making multiple profiles a pain to set up.
Multiple app crashes, several password changes, but it's done and both of my kids are going to be grumpy because they lost some watch history.

My only Black Friday purchase has been a five-pack of 32 GB microSDHC drives, which is totally overkill for my NanoKVMs, which are en route. However, $17 for all five was too good a deal to pass on.

podcast-transcript looks neat. I rolled my own last summer so I could quickly transcribe and take notes. TIL the Groq API can do this too. I have mostly use Whisper Turbo and various models for fun.

I had my first Obsidian sync via iCloud issue, which wiped out my main vault. I quickly recovered it from my office Time Machine volume.
It's a pain point that I will consider switching to Obsidian Sync.
I have seen a few weird issues with how special macOS folders are managed when trying to sync with SyncThing too, and I suspect they're related.
Bummer because it was stable until my last OS upgrade.

None of this is a justification but I join you in this frustration.
As an insider, platform moderation is hard. WGs only know what is reported to them. Even then, people are paranoid about secret cabals, etc.
Then there are layers to get through (aka wait) and even more when needing input from a board or SC so they have buy-in.
Platform rules are different than CoC rules, and most of these platforms exist by outside groups, which might have morphed into official groups.

We needed something big enough for a four-person family that has 4 to 5 long (~8.5 hours) trips to see family a year. We didn't want something huge, but we wanted a third row so we could shuffle car seats around when the grandparents are in town. We also weren't ready for a mini-van and didn't want a huge SUV.

We are Subaru fans, and I love my Ascent (2023). However, I do wish they had better EV and hybrid options.
Several of the rental companies overbought EVs and were selling them at a discount not that long ago. That might be an option if you want a Solterra.

Thank you for the overview. We are doing similar things, but I have yet to put them all together. You are also doing more and some cool things with it.
The mental hurdle for me is that I'm quick to build out these one-off useful tools, but I have yet to chain them together in a useful or reusable way. I have played with FSM, but I haven't landed on a pattern that I like. I'm way, way overthinking it.

That sounds really cool. Are you using tool-calling or something to sort email and have you written about it?
I have two projects that I keep meaning to add AI support for that both handle email.
I'm also considering an AI spam checker for django packages since that's a battle I don't feel like I'm winning.

So while I'm really thankful for the Bluesky start packs, I feel like I'm drowning and overwhelmed for who to follow as a result.
I also feel overwhelmed because I don't want to blindly follow everyone on them. I'm already struggling with a bit too much Python/tech and these would put me closer to >90% of only that content.

64 GB is going to get you the best of today. 128 GB is hard to justify, but it might give you a bit more runway if model sizes change. I'm not even sure how to predict that.
The latest LLama 3.2 models are fairly reasonably sized (1B to 11B for consumers) https://ollama.com/library/llama3.2
LLM + llm-ollama is a pretty nice combo plus the many other projects Simon writes about. Ollama can run hugging fact models too.

I gave the OpenAI o1-preview a try tonight, and I'm not sure what to think of it. It's neat to try out something that's early, but I wasn't sure how to do anything useful with it. Nothing I tried seemed better, but I'm not sure I'm clear on how to really use it. I asked it to help create a few new prompts and that was promising. I look forward to seeing what other people do with it, in case I'm just missing something.

I think cookiecutter is perfectly fine/amazing for kicking off a new project.
Copier has support for updating projects and even has a migration concept. See if https://copier.readthedocs.io/en/stable/updating/ speaks to you.
I haven't looked in a while, but I thought their hooks fit my brain too.

🤔 While I'm not permanently giving up on the Overcast podcast app, it's been so buggy since the rewrite that a show-stopping bug reminds me and frustrates me every day.
If you are an iOS user, what are you using as a stopgap to play your podcasts?
Today's, but I had to kill the app to get new podcasts to download and play.
Last week, I had to kill the app to advance from one episode to the next on my Homepod Mini.
Before the rewrite, everything just worked. 😔

🏡 I was skeptical that a Gutter Cleaning kit would work well with a Rigid shop vac, but I'm impressed. I could safely use it from the ground, but it was 2x as fast to use the ladder to check for debris. I definitely will use it next year.

I feel you. I"m in that 72 to 100 range myself, but I mentally know whatever the top 5 or so have a chance of getting done.
I also started adding an emoji for whatever task I have been dreading the most or putting off the most. Sometimes scheduling that or giving myself a pep talk that 99% of my stress goes away after that item is done feels good.

I agree it's a foot gun.
I think the biggest iceberg is that Django's default settings.py do not run in production, regardless of which deployment server option one picks.
That has always felt broken to me.
Once we solve that, we can land on a better default production server 😉

my hot take (in case you were wondering 🤣)
Django should work in production by default (and locally). It should WARN loudly and plainly so people know what settings to change for security reasons.
This is 90% of the settings pain in my book.
Configuring apps has it's own pain scale but most just work once added to INSTALL_APPS and that's what docs are for.

Because of the roast and rib tips I cooked it all on the smoker. 200F for several hours and then I raised the heat and put the burgers on around 400F to 450F.

I cooked a pork loin roast, four ribs (basically burnt ends), and three burgers. Basically stuff for the week. Everything was fine, but I need to get some smaller pans. I can add liquid to add to the smoke and low cooking.

My options were limited so we are making the best of it. I took in below freezing weather quite a bit and I tend to make something that is fine being cooked low for 4, 6, or more hours. This reminds me I should get one of those wraps for it, though, for the winter.

It's some but mostly a trope I suspect. I think the ones that are known for it, like Rodgers, dig into it because they like the attention. The vast majority are just worried about keeping their jobs and a roof over their heads for the families, like everyone else.

Just hear to +1 that direnv can do this. Even if you don't end up using this, direnv is a really, really, really nice way to safely load and unload ENV variables. So I use it for that feature and not the venv management.

While I love 1Password, I feel really uncomfortable merging my 2FA into it, and yet I have started to do that because of Authy + Google Auth fails along with how hard it is to keep a backup set of yubikeys around. So 1Password is my best solution today, but I feel uncomfortable about that being my best path forward.

It's so annoying. Always update at 3am and I can figure out what to do it something breaks or fails. Better yet, do a fullback and revert. I'm using the docker setup so everything is there that's needed to roll back the image if something gets borked. This a problem they invented.
