bugs aside, it doesn’t support dependency groups for uv pip and it doesn’t support dynamic versions in project mode (uv lock/sync)
that’s a double-whammy that makes it impossible to use for FOSS except as a faster replacement for pip.
also uv tool/uvx doesn’t support inheriting dependencies which makes it impossible to run Ansible which is kinda a big deal

this reminds me I wanted to ask you forever: are you aware of a tool that I can feed audio (or video) in and that spits out subtitles that I can upload to YouTube? YT’s auto-subs are a bit challenged by my… speaking idiosyncrasies… but e.g. AudioHijack’s Whisper model produces pretty good results but not in a format I can use (I think I need SRT?). MacWhisper doesn’t mention anything like that either :-/

Something weird about myself that I keep learning the hard way is that for some weird reason, my brain does not click with an one-tool-for-everything approach.
I love Obsidian & I love it for knowledge management. But for some reason, I cannot write in it. There’s no meaningful difference between writing in iA Writer & Obsidian, but forcing myself to write in Obsidian causes so much resistance I just don’t write. I also had to move research back into MindNode. (1/2)

Since whenever I talk about #Python and #Docker, I invariably get told that virtual environments inside of Docker make no sense, I’ve spent my weekend writing down why I think it does.

Yeah but that’s exactly gonna happen once you work under economic constraints and middle managers pining for promotions. My point is exactly what you’re accidentally implying: they’re amazing for tinkering but a time bomb in prod envs. 🤷‍♂️

There’s kinda a difference between tinkering where ambition is good, and writing production software, no? What that articles predicts is a wave of janky, poorly-understood, and unidiomatic code that will eventually collapse under its own weight. I like LLMs as an assistant to learning, but man a world where people “learn” .NET in an afternoon and start churning out “production” code is positively dystopian to me

I don't have anything and I'm unlikely to produce anything, because after virtualenvs and src dirs, I have no interest to be prominently in a Python culture war it’s just too fucking exhausting. I'm only talking to you about it because we’re mutuals in the first place. ;)

virtualenvs are the closest we have in Python to a build artifact. They’re well-documented, widely tested, & can be deployed both as Docker containers, distro packages, or just an rsync. uv even brought back relocatable venvs so you can move them around!?
I see no semantical reason to keep the application outside of the virtualenv—it makes deployments weirder & more complicated to reason about (cue PYTHONPATH).

I don’t know man, this looks a big step back. There’s no reason for Django apps to not be properly packaged. I understand why they did it (if you want to go big, you have to support sloppy patterns), but it’s a loss nevertheless. :(
