There’s actually an explanation for why this feels the way it does. It’s because when you’re young, everything is new. New experiences bring us in to the present moment. As we grow, we stop having new experiences. The days feel the same and we lose that presence. Time speeds up. Spend a year doing new shit, traveling, and living in the moment and time will slow down.

Those communities were likely much smaller too so it was easier to form bonds with people. On social media you’re looking at 100-200+ different conversations easily each day. It’s impossible to get to know people well just skimming through.

social media is pretty crappy because it generally kills meaningful discussions, online communities have existed since the dawn of internet and they used to produce much tighter relationships (i'm still friends with people who i've met over 20y ago on irc and forums)
