except our government hasn't stopped making pennies, and that's what our currency is called, unlike you Americans who insist on calling several of your coins odd names that don't directly tell you what they are (penny for central, dime for ...?) When my brother moved there years ago, he got quite confused that the dime doesn't even say ON IT what it's actually worth - he has to ask someone else.

I always thought that we should have not been in the EU in 1974, and then there would have been two roughly-equal sized blocks in Europe, the EU and EFTA, which would have worked better for all. As it was, by not leaving then, we made it so that, over time, the only sensible thing for other European countries, especially the former Soviet bloc countries, to do was to try to get into the EU, or, at the very least, come to a formal agreement, like Norway did.

I disagree. Whilst there can be small amounts of growth in parts of the economy, I don't believe that our climate really will cope with constant growth (however you define that). We have been taking and taking for far too long. We need Degrowth now.

The problem is that we should never allow anyone to do this to anyone, the fact that he is a US citizen should have been irrelevant. Too many people have been fine with this being done to 'others' (people not my colour, not my belief, not my nationality) for too long.

The daft thing is that they always try to do it the wrong way round. Even the way they talk about it ( 'illegal workers' rather than 'illegal employers') shows how they are framing it. Most workers don't want to work illegally, as they know they're more likely to be exploited, so a scheme whereby people who are migrants CAN work (rather than sitting for years not being permitted) would remove most illegal working overnight. Then concentrate on punishing illegal employers.

I think that there's a perception that people go rightwing as they get older. I don't think so, I think that people go rightwing due to it being advantageous to them and their lifestyle as they get older, if they are fortunate to be well-off enough. Whereas those who struggle, or see others struggle, keep a common humanity, and tend to go left.

Currently sat in Chesterfield station, on the first leg of travel of our holiday (okay, we've already taken two buses to get her). As someone who has read and studied the Bible, I'm afraid to say I have to concur. Ever since Constantine, it has been obvious that the establishment tries to pervert the church by bringing a few people up to believe that they are standing up for 'good government ' or 'stability' or 'peace' and leading most of the rest of the church to be compliant. Our job should be to comfort the uncomfortable, and discomfort the comfortable.

Taxing private as well as corporate landlords is definitely the way to go. The idea that anyone should profit out of someone needing a house over their head is immoral. I'm sorry that you thought that the best way to save was by exploiting others. (As a fair rent would be LESS than what it costs you to run the property, as you still have the property at the end)

I always remember my mum telling me, when my first son was born, to remember that he is an individual, not just 'the baby'. She explained that numerous people would give 'advice', well-meant, about what to do for various situations (eg. How to treat colic) that wouldn't work for our child, because he was an individual (and likewise what worked with one child wouldn't necessarily work for a sibling). Without realising, this was the best piece of advice she gave.

Although there is something to be said for putting solar on already-used land if there is a requirement for power there, that car park is probably half the problem - people really need to think about alternative means of travel, and if they need to travel in the first place. Possible, but maybe not practical - you would need each phone to negotiate connection with the next one, and the interference from all the other phones would be horrific. Would probably need something like Bluetooth, as NFC tends to be too low power. If someone is jamming mobile signals and WiFi, then the Bluetooth frequency will also be easy to jam at the same time. Probably better for some of the people to have older tech like walkie-talkies.

It's patently clear that this a short-term money-saving exercise. If disabled people were really the focus, you wouldn't start from an amount of money to save and work backwards. My wife receives PIP because she is unable to work. She has an incurable, untreatable condition, which means there is nothing we can do, but it costs us more money. IF this PIP was cut, we would be better off with me leaving my job and claiming benefits until I retire in just over 5 years.

There's also another reason why new student housing is being built in cities that need normal housing - developers can evade requirements for certain other facilities, and house people more intensely, thus making even more money. When, after a few years, they prove that there's too much student accommodation for demand, it is then 'converted' into housing.

my dad said the rot set in when the government (believe it was the 70s) allowed building societies to take more than one income into account for mortgages. Together with the selling of council housing, previously providing a decent source of reliable rental properties, and thus keeping rents down in the private sector, and the promotion of home-ownership as a form of wealth, we are now in a situation where unproductive landlords sit on the commonwealth of the country.

Yeah, we need to stop most people from having cars; and, for those who have them, to use them less, and to have the best sort of car. Many of my neighbours have cars. We live a few minutes' walk from several small shops and frequent bus services (including into town, where there is a railway station, and buses to other places). Most of them COULD do without cars (I am the exception, being a bus driver going to the depot).

Not sure that that is legal. If each individual booking is being defined as a separate contract, then deducting something from their wages is not right. The only way they could do that would be for the app company to be acting as an agency, employing them, surely? Then they would be permitted to pay them on a set frequency, and any fees for getting the money earlier would be as an advance on their wages.

I would argue that we need fewer, better-thought-out laws, and removing redundant and unfair laws should be higher on people's agenda. But it might be partially a bad sign. the problem is really that growth is actually good in the first place. In all my lifetime, the GDP of this country has actually made no difference to my ability to live and thrive. What has made a difference is not economically measurable, so, for most economists, worthless. Also, people's generosity has not done harm to our finite environment like the capitalist idea of continuous growth. We need to fundamentally reassess our analysis to account for that.

if your internet is still connected with the landline, which it sounds like it is, then restoration of one should restore the other. Landlines are soon to be removed (already have been in some areas), so you should receive notification when the things switch over in your area. At that point, you can either have a physical phone wired to connect via your router, or have it removed.

that's why I bought my current one -repairable, made from mainly recycled materials, and upgradeable. Look into it - the Fair phone 5. Expect it to last 10 years, runs Android, and I've even managed not to put a Google account on it at all. (Get my apps via F-droid, or Aurora store via anonymous login.) Not owned by a billionaire or a corrupt country, no slavery connection, made in Europe.
