i just think it's really silly how anarcho-lefists act like they are separate from the democratic party but then mostly go out and vote anyway, are completely invested in the outcome of elections, and so implicitly cosign to the strategy of pushing the dems left whether they realize it or not, they are incapable of separating themselves from liberals in any meaningful way
it's really the worst of both worlds because they neither contruct an alternative political ecosystem altogether, nor do they enter the democratic party on the local level and try to oust the DNC leadership and run socialist candidates, so political action amounts to sporadic entryism into popular movements that are mostly led by progressives/liberals that are easily coopted and called off. Meanwhile it's the most milquetoast reformist elements that end up actually doing anything, and naturally, because they like principles and systemic critique, go the route of compromise and opportunism.

I also fuck with Kwame Ture and his thing is that voter registration is a means of mobilizing people and community engagement, the voter registration drives he did in the deep south laid the foundations of the Black Panther party there, the act of voting or the outcome of the election is not the ultimate end, it's something you can do to engage with the community and build organizational capability
it's pretty clear most white US anarchists/leftists do not have this frame of reference, they haven't studied the civil rights movement, they don't situate their politics in these historic liberation struggles, despite the fact white leftists were heavily involved with these movements in their day, because their politics are largely ahistorical and abstract, and defined solely by a reaction against contemporary DNC liberalism -- so it does not occur to them how weird it is to tell people not to vote, especially for people in the US South, where there's a long history of activists being brutally murdered for registering black people to vote, where mass voter disenfranchisement is still a big thing, where the entire republican regime is almost whole dependent on gerrymandering and systematic voter disenfranchisement.
To be fair there's lots of black folks who consciously choose to not vote, for reasons as well thought out as anyone else. But it's telling how rare this historic reality is even addressed. A big part of is imo is US leftists do not identify their own liberation as proletarians with the struggle of the black colony.

The issue isn't voting as such, it's whether the masses are organized, when they are, then they are able to pressure political parties to support policies they want, or even influence which candidates are nominated, this is why the New Deal happened, it's not just that people voted for FDR, rather FDR was elected and was able to pass social democratic reforms becuase the masses were organized and demanded it and the ruling class was forced to grant these concessions.
So the thing is to get the people organized and they'll decide whether they'll vote or who they vote for, either voting in isolation, finger wagging people about why they should vote, or quixotically telling people who mostly don't vote anyway, why they shouldn't vote under any circumstance doesn't do anything

Saw I saw this line of reasoning going around, I get what is the point here that certain people are in a situation where they cannot engage in a boycott because they need to patronize some company or another, like if you live in a rural area and Walmart is the only pharmacy within 100 miles you can't boycott Walmart, i think any reasonable person would understand that situation
But that's not 'privilege' tho, if privilege is some tangible benefit that a hierarchical system provides to some but not others, privilege is like cops showing preferential treatment to white people, employers making things easier fro able bodied people, those are privileges.
When you boycott something you are not receiving a benefit, you are denying oneself access to a service to hurt the provider in pursuit of a goal, you an as individual don't get something out of a boycott that is being denied to someone who is unable to participate.
Like the famous Montgomery bus boycott, they didn't just tell people not to ride the bus and finger wag people who relied on the bus system for work, they organized carpools / rideshares and other services as a temporary alternative to the bus system. That's what a real boycott looks like, these days boycotts are framed as acts of ethical consumerism, totally individual and moralistic. That's the problem, boycotts should be collective strategic endeavors that take into account everyone's needs.

it tends to be intellectuals with social status who are actually highly susceptible to these kinds of things, if you've spent time studying cults like me, cult recruits or people who become immeshed in conspiracy theories aren't mindless sheep who just believe what they're told but people who are looking for something deeper, who are suspicious of surface appearances and assume there is some higher wisdom underneath, radical politiical ideoogies ( i use that in a neutral descriptive sense ) do appeal to a similar kind of 'seeker' with promises of revealed wisdom, that is what 'radical' means, to dig below the surface, to get at the root... marxism and anarchism as well fascism/nazism, in the latter case the parallels with esotericism are quite explicit.
With mass memetic disinfo campaigns and large spectacular events, this process has accellerated, where one basically speed runs all these stages and gets to the deeper revealed truth, like a recent *event* of this magnitude, all of the major conspiracy theories were worked out in a span of a few hours on twitter, no doubt assisted by AI, itself trained on a century of conspiratorial texts.

something that's often downplayed by anarchists and marxists alike is , a major factor in the collapse of Czarism was a decade long campaign of 'propaganda of the deed' aimed at the ruling class, there were hundreds of bombings and assassinations against capitalists, generals, minsters and so on roughly between 1900-1910
this is often described as a failure, and while it certainly took a major toll on anarchists who were brutally repressed by the state and cut off from the masses, much to the benefit of other socialists, considering how Czarism completely collapsed the decade after, it's strange to say this was a failure. No if you kill thousands of members of ruling class the regime will collapse, or at the very least it will be weakened to such an extent that it is incapable of maneuvering against a mass uprising, it's not that complicated. This is in my opinion why the Russian Revolution succeeded while the German Revolution failed. The leadership of the ruling class, it's generals and industrialists and fascist politics were totally intact after the war, so it was trivial for them to organize death squades to liquidate the communist revolution in 1919, because these good obedient germans, following the advice of daddy Engels, worked almost exclusively within the law. So the most brutal and energetic elements of the German regime just massacred them with little resistance.
conducting such a campaign has the added benefit of undermining the dominant ideology, the moral qualms that prevent people from taking their liberating into their own hands, just like when a healthcare CEO is killed, many people find themselves saying "fuck em, they should die", regardless of previous political alignment, and so realizing the fact these murderous billionaires are allowed to walk around freely is the real moral outrage.
Terror Works. That's why the IDF, the CIA, the KKK and everyone else does it, the ruling class knows that if the workers turn on them violently they do not have a snowballs chance in hell, and that's why you've been taught your whole life that terror doesn't work, that non-violence and working within the law works, because it doesn't. Were outright neo-nazis to gain power in Germany today, they would definitely maintain or even expand their alliance with Israel, claiming that their brutal repression of lefties and brown people is 'combatting anti-semitism', they would probably justify the mass deportation of Jews in terms of 'protecting jews from anti-semitism" and Israel/Zionists would enthusiastically cooperate with them as a solution to their much discussed "population problem." This is barely an exaggeration.

turns out that blocking ads, using privacy frontends, running custom android roms and linux, browsing with the tor browser and other things actually do protect your privacy and make it harder for the feds and megacorps to know what you're up to because most of mass surveilance is purely *passive* and relies on people to actively give out their personal information to data brokers and their profiling or whatever isn't nearly as advanced as they want us to think.
remembering we had a friend stay with us who used an iphone and apparently you can't block ads on safari ( pathetic ) and then we got targeted ads for the first time in years. People actually think this is acceptable.

yeah the concept of "semite" as a racial category is absolutely rooted in 19th century race science, of course, there are Semitic languages of which Hebrew, Arabic, as well as Coptic and many African languages share common lineage, but the idea of a semitic "race" is bullshit.
It is complicated as Jews broadly trace their ancestry back to ancient Hebrews, this is partly mythologized, but even accounting for occurrences of mass conversion, the social norms that encourage Jews to marry other Jews mean such a shared common ancestry is at least plausible for many/most, and this is why many European based Jews have traits more commonly found in the middle east than Europe, but on a long enough timeline basically everyone is related, and there is no such thing as a "jewish/semitic race" nor is ancestry the sole or primary factor in Jewish identity, rather than faith or cultural affiliation.
So Anti-Jewish or Jew-Hatred is probably a more accurate terms and less nebulous. But I do think there is a broader anti-semitism that includes both hatred for Jews and Arabs and all MENA peoples that goes back a very long time. The racist stereotypes pertaining to Jews and Arabs are quite similar, for example. So i find many Zionist critiques of the term to be problematic, since they would like to reject any shared heritage with Arabs or deny that islamophobia and anti-jewish hatred are historically related -- since that would implicate themselves in their anti-arab genocide.
If we want to really go back to the roots of anti-semitism broadly speaking all roads lead to Rome, and their colonial project in the middle east and north africa was anti-semitic in the broad sense, Carthagians referred to themselves as Canaani, i.e. from Canaan, and the cultural similarities between Carthagians and Jews was not lost on the Romans. So there's obviously a connection between the Roman genocide and occupation of Carthage(modern Lybia) and that of Judea / Palestine -- to be clear the Romans didn't have our modern conception of Race, and their proto anti-semitism is very different from what we have today, but it does has a direct influence on everything that came after it.
This structural anti-semitism of Rome was inherited by Christian Europe ( jew-hatred is baked into christian theology itself ) and prefigured many historical events, like the Crusades, or the Inquisition ( the Spanish inquisition in particularly was both Anti-Muslim and Anti-Jewish )
I understand taking such a long view is very messy, serious historians are weary of making such broad strokes, for at the very least it's very difficult to prove, and i've certainly made grave oversimplifications here and shouldn't be taken too literally. But from a political point of view I think it is necessary to root out this deep sickness endemic to Western Civilization itself.

i think it was, and iirc you are you are right that we should focus on elevating independent studios, publishers, music labels etc. i'm just more on the side of never discouraging piracy even for silly reasons lol, not enough people pirate, and alot of people actually believe the anti file sharing propaganda
My default position is just pirate everything, especially everything that is put out by big corporations, *except* the things you really want to *support* like independent game devs, musicians etc. so yeah bandcamp, buying books or games directly from the creator, leaving a good review, sharing their stuff on the socials, it's fun and easy, builds a community, all that good stuff

'i don't think piracy is an effective political practice'
in everyday practice piracy isn't meant to be a political act, it's a way to get things for free, someone stealing food doesn't need to have some political justification to do so, but it's still a political act.
What is I think *revolutionary* about piracy, even if most pirates don't realize, isn't that it hurts corporate revenue ( which arguably it doesn't for the most part ) it's that by torrenting or using/sharing pirate websites you're in effect building distributed network infrastructure that is resilent to corporate censorship and provides needed information for free.
We could just stop calling it piracy altogether and call it 'file sharing' which is what it literally is.

Xmpp is not an 'alternative' to Signal, xmpp is a protocal on which a variety of apps can be built on top of, text, voice and audio chat (conversations) video conferencing ( jitsi) or social media (movim) xmpp can also use a variety of encryption methods currently omemo is the standard, but other better standards could be used ( and omemo is pretty solid already )
Signal, which requires a phone number, is centralized under a shady organization and only works on smartphones(which are all backdoored anyway) is pretty limited and has some unavoidable privacy compromises that can be easily avoided with xmpp.
Not saying don't use signal but the idea it is some bulletproof gold standard and that Xmpp is 'insecure' is just false
