Nosta tries to respect NIP-89 and link out to clients that the user recommends. First, the user who created the content, second the reader, and then it falls back to some common/reliable clients. That only works if users post those recommendation/preference events. Maybe that needs to become easier.

A minor update just rolled out, updating the profile creation flow to show the new standard format (nsec) for private keys. Login accepts both new and old formats (but you really should use an extension).
Some libraries got updated, which required a few code tweaks. Reach out if you notice anything not working as it should.
Next up is implementation of a dedicated Nosta relay to provide reliable storage and retrieval of basic profile info. Goal is to speed up site load times and reduce "profile not found" situations.

Nice. True, if you just want a super clean view, then this is great. Nosta tries to be more playful and colorful, and also shows activity other than notes (blog posts, files, badges...). Different tools for different purposes.

Thanks. There was a technical issue recently where none of the profiles loaded, maybe you checked during that time.
One feature idea is to let you customize your profile - choose which sections you want visible, and in which order. That would be a nice one to have.

There's now a dedicated screen for editing your relays on Nosta ( this first version is likely too complicated). You can see various statistics for the connection, so you can make a good decision on whether to keep or remove a relay.
Quite a few relays have silently disappeared. This is invisible to users, but does affect them. Ideally, clients can automatically help connect to reliable relays that work best for how someone interacts across the network. Not an easy task to solve. It will take some iteration to get it right, and the features related to this on Nosta will likely be a bit of a construction site for some time.

There is a good chance that one of your relays has gone away. This seems to happen quite frequently, and we don't have a good mechanism to steer people to "good" relays in a simple manner. Guessing it is "nostr-01.bolt.observer" in your case.

It may happen that there are different versions of your profile, follow list, or relay list are out there. On Nosta, you can now easily clean up by republish the version you prefer. Go to your profile, click the "...", then "View profile data".
There's a bunch of new functionality in Nosta right now and the code may not be 100% solid yet. Better to get it out a little early and iterate. Please share your feedback so we can fix things up pronto.

You can now follow others on Nosta profiles. Just press that "Follow" button. Or press "Following" if you don't want to follow them anymore. Up to you.
Heads up, this is new functionality with lots of new background logic. It may not work properly. But more testing is going to happen the next few days and it will solidify (fingers crossed).
There are some follow-up features planned. Like showing which people you and the person whose profile you're looking at have in common. But first, time to test and solidify. Your patience during this time is appreciated.

We don't do anything particular to support search engines.
Generally, notes that are published on websites become indexable, just like any other content. Search engines just need a link structure they can follow to discover it.

The offchain.pub relay, one of your recommended relays, has outdated information. You can see this on your Nosta profile when clicking "..." and then "View profile data".

These things are a bit shaky overall, but getting better.
- Sometimes relays refuse connections and the client does not receive notes from them
- Some clients don't broadly push profile updates, resulting in multiple versions floating around
- Some clients have different ways of checking relays, resulting in different data sets
- Some services (like Primal) have caching systems, while others do not
Good thing is that nothing is fundamentally broken due to these inconsistencies. With more development and operation experience, these problems should fade away (fingers crossed).

So it looks like there are two subtly different versions of your profile data around. The latest one on the Primal relay does not have the lightning icon. There's one created just a split second earlier on the Snort relay that has the icon. No way to know how that came around.
Profile updates should really be blasted out across many (or all) relays instead of just one or a few, but many clients don't seem to do that.
When Nosta tries to connect to relays, they sometimes refuse. If that happens, and there are multiple versions of your profile floating around, you may see outdated information.
Sounds very problematic, but these things are improving continuously. We just need to have a little patience with Nostr for the time being.

Boards are only rendered from the nos.lol relay, because that's the only one Pinstr currently checks, and Nosta links out to the site for board details. No dead links this way. That will be updated when Pinstr updates relay handling (already discussed it).
Nosta now renders about 20 different kinds. People can be active in so many different ways, so hopefully everyone can have a unique and personal profile that reflects their interests.

As with other content, Nosta is just showing the info. Interacting with calendar and events, scheduling your own, etc, is left up to dedicated third-party clients (micro apps). These events link out to Flockstr at the moment, but hopefully there will be more adoption of recommended handlers, and then users are linked out to the service of their choice.

Makes sense. Nosta is currently designed as a general entry point into the Nostr ecosystem, not as a replacement flow for other clients. This is something I'd like to explore further and have a to-do here: https://github.com/GBKS/nosta-me/issues/64
There were some discussions months ago around building an onboarding kit that would allow devs to easily set up customized profile creation based on their unique client needs. I don't think much happened with that though.
To your point 3, that definitely needs to improve. Users need to be much better set up to log in to other clients after profile creation. Need to prioritize that.
For point 4, do you imagine following hashtags? Or having categories of people and then pick who to follow? I looked around recently and there just didn't seem enough content out there to make that work. But things change quickly...

Profiles now show your latest 2 posts (short-form notes), and your latest article (long-form note). Lots of people don't do anything else on Nostr, so they look pretty empty without these notes. So this addition should make it easier to learn about people and what they care about.

Not sure what to do on Nostr? When you're logged in, your Nosta profile now shows a small box at the bottom that looks like this:

The tips are of course based on what events the site found for your profile (or more accurately, what it didn't find). You can click each tip to get redirected to nostrapp.link to a list of apps that support this specific activity.
This should help especially new users to find stuff to do. It's not perfect though. Apart from some usual testing and tweaking that is always needed on a new feature, not enough apps are listed on nostrapp.link.
If you are an app developer, please post the required NIP-89 events to make your service discoverable. And make sure the description is really clear for newcomers.

Would be great to find a solution for this that goes far beyond recommending the same "influencers" over and over as many other social networks do. What would you personally find helpful and interesting?
This list could then also be used to recommend relays and clients. Important to consider that this should be just an initial list for users to start with, and that clients help them personalize who they follow over time.

The data overlay just got a revision.

Now it shows all the data loaded for your profile, with a convenient nav. Before it was just a long dump of parts of the profile info.
What's missing is a health check. For example, it can point out when you have outdated profile info floating around. Or when your relay list could be optimized. It should be dead simple to keep your profile in good shape. However, this data overlay is a bit more for devs than for users and the health check may live elsewhere. Still, it's nice to have this transparent view behind the scenes.

Yes, that sounds right. And these touch points may vary based on what the use case is. If you set up an online shop, there's a good chance you want people to know how to view it. And apps need to track if the user has already recommended them so they don't bother them unnecessarily.

Yes, this should not become a self-promotion tool, but a way for users to express their preferences and let others know where they can be found for different activities. Worst case scenario is that apps show a pop-up right when you log in and try to trick you into recommending them. Your app manager is a great place to offer these best practices to developers. For example, when a developer creates their first app, they could be presented with options on integrating recommendation features in just the right places.

Nosta is now listed in the Nostr App Manager. This is a new system for recommending apps. Adding apps to your profile helps others find out in which parts of the ecosystem you are active - great for discovery. Nosta profiles will also soon show your app recommendations.

Profile editing on Nosta works now. Some refinements are still to come, like addressing both "name" and "display name", better validation, and tips for potentially confusing fields. Another important feature is indicating when there multiple profile versions were found on relays, letting you pick which one you want to use moving forward, and then updating all relays accordingly. There's always more to do, but the basics should be there now. If you try it, please share your feedback.

The icon for handles (NIP-05) was changed. It was a check, indicating that some type of account verification had happened. That's not accurate though. Handles are just human-readable shortcuts, often provided by third-party providers, without any sort of identification process. The new icon is more general and avoids that association.
