Yeah, but you're phrasing your impression of the discussions on Mastodon (?) as if it's reflecting of Codeberg's actual policies, which, with all due respect, they don't.
On the contrary, the blog post states informal guidelines that very much exclude cases like yours: https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html
If you think that's a "bad omen" anyway, fully respect that and the honesty to your community, but I don't think it's an honest narrative of the infra providers' intentions.

For the record, fully respect the decision to self-host instead of using someone else's computer (and the transparency), but I must note that the amount Tom is describing wouldn't have been a problem to begin with.

I have a friend who is a software engineer and is a fan of trains (i.e. open data). They are looking for a job in and around NRW, Germany.
They can work with just about any modern language other than Haskell and COBOL. Whether it's tinkering around with the Linux kernel, being able to tell you which train to take or dealing with enterprise-grade software – they can do it all.
Unfortunately, the market is tough right now. Can any of you all help / give leads?

Hi #Stuttgart, I have organized a "hybrid" member assembly (hundreds online, some offline in different locations) for #Codeberg and. I have a location in Stuttgart, and 9 people are planned to show up with cameras and microphones. It doesn't have AC, and we'll get to 36 degrees.
I have doubts as to whether I can organize things safely in the heat while talking for 3 hours straight. Is there any other entity that could host us instead (requirements: space, AC, projector is a nice-to-have)?

#Codeberg has a rather small team backing it. As registrations on Codeberg have gone way up as of the past week, we could always use help from (both from non-technical and technical volunteers). To see what we have to offer, take a look here: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/Contributing/wiki
There isn't necessarily a time commitment involved (if at all). Say, if 20 people spent 5-15 minutes to, say, send a pull request to something that annoyed them in our documentation, it would be in a much better state.

Hi, thank you for spreading the word. Given that money is involved, I think that I have to correct a nuance regarding our blog post (personal opinion) so as to not have people feel misled: We are generally very frugal and tend to prefer upcycling hardware that would otherwise be useless as a _matter of principle_. It's also why we chose to promote another non-profit that repurposes hardware to those in need.

people often tell me "you know, I like [this project], but there's JUST ONE LITTLE ISSUE THAT is preventing me from..."
and then I say "if I had the time to deal with everyone's one little issues, I'd need a massive sponsorship or universal basic income". i divert a lot of my efforts into helping other people get started, because that, in the long run, saves me time (even if that approach fails sometimes).

what is important to the project is not your ability to respond fast, but your ability to prevent the hobby from becoming a full-time unpaid job - i still fail at that.
the solution is: on-boarding, then delegate, delegate, delegate. if nobody else is there, tell the people in your issues that you're at capacity and could use extra help.

There isn't an active pull request for federated PRs/issues (PoCs exist), discoverability (PoCs exist), everything is unit tested (now: against GTS as well), there is not a lot of front-facing functionality (yet). A lot of necessary groundwork is ongoing - a lot more work in maturing the moderation tools is also needed, but that has been moving forward because of Codeberg's presence as a massive instance (e.g. user blocking and reporting other users are Forgejo features now).
