a very helpful @nprofile…x6z3 helped @nprofile…h0ux and me get set up with the Reflow Oven at @nprofile…rnsy today so we're finally assembling a prototype of this pocket reform hex keyboard mod!

hey folks, i could use some DevOps advice on a work-related topic!
tl;dr: anyone have some experiences with Talos or Kairos and/or k3s and k0s to share?
For context, we do a lot of prototyping and deployments on varied platforms (some cloud/web, interactive media on windows on-prem, SBCs/Raspis) without a clear general approach.
I have a project coming up that will involve deploying ~100 SBCs (amd64) that will run a kiosk mode browser and I would like to take the opportunity to implement a deployment architecture here that we can lean on in the future.
Requirements:
- immutable OS partition: soldered eMMC means minimizing writes is imperative
- small (worker) footprint: needs to run decent on 4GB SBCs
- integrates well with other/non-bare-metal deployments (cloud/linux servers, ideally even windows)
- bonus: compatible with a "federated" setup where there's local management nodes (per site and project), but ops data can also be forwarded and aggregated centrally
Anti-Requirements:
- cloud-based / requires Internet: needs to work with interrupted internet connectivity. Prefer sandboxing workers at the network level
- Siloed all-in-one solution with limited interoperability
The compatibility and siloing are my main gripes with Balena: it has features like monitoring and VPN built in which sure that's cool but we already have a (different) VPN, and if I can't integrate my non-balena nodes in the deployment process or your monitoring solution you're not helping.
That's why I've started looking at the Kubernetes-based solutions, it seems that would let me use a Talos or Kairos for SBCs (and maybe bare-metal servers and VMs, too) and mix-and-match that with other Kube infrastructure.
Between Talos and Kairos so far I find Talos the more technically convincing implementation, but Kairos has actually open governance and would make it easier to customize the base image where necessary (e.g. pinctrl driver for one of the SBCs we're using). I also have no idea how I'd go about choosing between k3s or k0s for Kairos and what choosing either would mean for interoperability with eventual other clusters. Help! Does anyone have experience with either they'd be willing to share?

the sad thing is that they can (and might) fix this, but the fix will be one of these two:
1. have the model run much longer, then have another model read that output and summarize: "reasoning" (aka maximize resource burning)
2. give the AI a traditionally-implemented "count characters in word" tool (address the symptom, aka admit defeat.

dang I didn't realize the mastodon "max photos" limit of 4 also applies to federated posts from other software. For example, this post has six panels attached on the original Akkoma (Pleroma-fork) instance:
https://fops.cloud/notice/B6h4zZnZ6zfM8AcGcS
But looking at it both from the mastodon web interface or Phanpy I only see four, even in the paginated view :(

@nprofile…y3hg awesome! The todo example looks very clean. This is missing a way to sync the "backlog" if a second node joins though, right? At least the way prune() is described, it seems like there's no way for someone joining the topic later to recover todos created earlier 🤔

Help! I've talked someone into being curious about (fragment) shader-ing ala shadertoy, but I can't find a decent node-based GUI for shader editing that has decent ergonomics but is also close enough to GLSL structurally to allow shadertoy-like mathy exploration.
So far everything I've seen fails in a significant way on either of these:
- Blender: separate "Math" and "Vector Math" nodes. "Math" node with drop-down instead of granular primitives
- Godot: "Function" node with drop-down instead of granular primitives
- Unity: uh ... i just don't want to do this to them i think
- cables.gl: no vector types at all??? setup a bit elaborate
- https://victhorlopez.github.io/editor/ closest so far; polymorphic functions but doesn't auto-cast values; UX a bit underdone
...surely there would be a web tool for this given the popularity of SDFs etc???

@nprofile…f3zv yeah it was a good read! Another 5y have passed and Automerge also landed a major release recently, I'd be curious how much that has tipped the comparisons made in the text still.

@nprofile…f3zv banger local-first software endorsement paragraph 5/6ths in:
"Philosophically, if I modify a google doc, my computer is asking Google for permission to edit the file. (You can tell because if google’s servers say no, I lose my changes.) In comparison, if I git push to github, I’m only notifying github about the change to my code. My repository is mine. I own all the bits, and all the hardware that houses them. This is how I want all my software to work."

Hm I see. I was telling a friend about Mitra exactly because there are premium subscriptions. A downside of the approach you propose is that premium subscribers would see both the previews and full posts which is a little confusing.
I imagine making the preview and the actual post *be* the same activitypub entity is difficult because 3rd party servers wouldn't handle sub-entity privacy... Perhaps replies can be used to make this a little more ergonomic somehow? Would a public reply to a subscriber-only post show up on 3rd party timelines?

@nprofile…0tle
can non-subscribers find out about whether / how much subscriber-only posts there are for a @nprofile…jvyd account?
I've browsed a couple of instances but I haven't seen any "locked content", is it just fully invisible to non-subscribers? If so, wouldn't it be useful to be able to "tease" content somehow (ideally with a link that helps people from other fediverse clients find the subscription link/info)

browsing the #38c3 fahrplan in anticipation and getting excited :)
Maybe the most intriguing talk intro so far:
Clay PCB
"We built an Ethical Hardware Kit with a PCB microcontroller made of wild clay retrieved from the forest in Austria and fired on a bonfire. Our conductive tracks use urban-mined silver and all components are re-used from old electronic devices. The microcontroller can compute different inputs and outputs and is totally open source."

Hey all! I'm going to be in Berlin from tomorrow to next monday. If you'd like to meet up shoot me a message! Looking forward to seeing some old & new faces :)
I'll also bring a couple of PCBs, kits and keyboards to trade if anyone's interested.
Also I'm still very hooked on https://folk.computer so if you'd like to see that in action and have access to a space with a projector, webcam & printer I'd be very happy to rig a set up together and give an intro :)

also the house is coming togetherrr! with attempt #3 the stairs for the bed platform are finally usable and with the couch arriving tomorrow it should be "feature complete" 😛
I'm quite happy with everything but also curious/scared to find out how long all the wood finish and silicone caulking I did is really gonna last 😬
