Okay, so here's what I think.
I think electoralism is a losing bet. Because! We don't get to do significant elections again for *years*, and the window we have to act within is measured in *weeks* (optimistically).
There are lots of great ideas for electoral reform. I'm partial to ranked choice, myself. Term limits. No more dark money. Recalls. Hell, I think Senators should be national, not by state. But it's all totally moot if there aren't going to be free elections anymore, and I'm pretty sure that's where Trump and his goons are headed.
Forget about 2026. 2026 is in another lifetime. You must act *now*. I think anyone who is telling you otherwise is at best delusional, and at worst an agent of the enemy, witting or no.

well the problem is the point of continuity is the tip of the cable, so some of those are clearly broken. if you tack them back down you might get them all making contact again so it's worth a try but I wouldn't consider that a permanent fix

2025-03-16 05:12:52 UTC

- reply

wellll it's a long shot but if you want to try and fix it, each of those "pins" there is one of the wires in the ribbon cable folded back on itself. if there's slack in the ribbon cable, you could potentially strip off a quarter inch of cladding and re-fold the wires, but if you don't have a specialized wire stripper to do the job it would take a *very* deft hand with a *very* sharp blade to get the cladding off. but, i mean, it's already broken, so ...

the thing about the court order getting Elmo and his hacker goons out if the treasury is it's too late, the damage is already done. it'll be nice if they comply, I guess, but right now they need to be *arrested* and all their tech *seized*, and the treasury systems rolled back a couple weeks. at a *minimum*.
but none of that will happen, so this is just a patch on the barn door at best.

been thinking about how history repeats itself, or at least rhymes
and i think it's because humans gonna human
and by that i mean, there's always gonna be a subset who are going to try to grab too much for themselves, upset the balances. fuck everything up
the boom-and-bust of technology busts because the people who are enriched, enstatused, empowered by the tech try to grab more. humans gonna human.
and the crash plays out the same, more or less, because humans gonna human.
plato was right, and i'm right. humans gonna human and that's the crack in every idea of a perfect society. we can aim for fully automated luxury gay space communism but there will always be elmos, there will always be trumps, there will always be some shit-tick who realizes he (always *he*) can get more if only he fucks some people over.
the problem is that this time the tech cycle has gone on long enough to *really* bone us. fifty million years of stored sunlight, gone in a century, spent, and for what? to boil the planet and make three guys richer than anyone, ever.
humans gonna human.
there is nothing new under the sun, says the fucking bible. repeating the same choruses over and over through all time because humans are the *exact fucking same* as they were when they first crossed out of africa.
telling the same stories, singing the same songs, making the same mistakes, because it *cannot* be otherwise.
gonna try anyway. *gotta* try anyway.
humans gonna human.

it's been my impression, from my limited study of history, that technological development tends to follow a boom-bust pattern. technology develops enabling concentration of power, power overreaches, society collapses (to a greater or lesser extent), technology regresses, repeat.
the pace of technological development is related to the speed information can be shared. the steam engine and telegraph enabled the dissemination of information at absolutely unprecedented speeds, leading to the explosive pace of development we've seen in the industrial age and the attendant absurd concentrations of power. and now we're riiiiight about at the point where overreach leads to collapse.
and, of course, once this collapse happens, that's it for humanity as a high-tech society. we burned up our bootstraps -- it's back to 1850, at best, after this.

i'm pretty sure it's a bad idea to do any kind of resisting online -- you're sure to leave a trace back to yourself, and there's a good chance anyone interacting with what you post will get tagged too.
but if you must, then you *have* to not make it easy for them. you *cannot* use any Meta (Facebook), Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, or Microsoft service, including Google Docs, Office365, gmail, MSN, Outlook, Threads, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Instagram, YouTube, and most other popular, wide-reaching services. You can't use Twitter, and given TikTok is soon to be slurped up by Oracle, you can't use that either.
Why? Because you wouldn't go stand out in front of a police station, put up a soapbox, and start broadcasting. You know full well you'd get picked up right away, *as would anyone who came to listen.*
You're not just protecting yourself, you're protecting your audience. Use Cryptpad instead of Google Docs. Use Signal instead of WhatsApp or Facetime. Use Pixelfed instead of Instagram. Use Mastodon instead of Twitter. Using Proton might not be a good idea but it's better than using Gmail.
Effective resistance is going to require eschewing the convenience -- and the reach -- of the tools offered by the enemy. That's just all there is to it.

2025-01-23 02:39:05 UTC

well I was thinking about it, and actually my answer is broadly the same --
From a D&D perspective, Outsiders are essentially sentient bits of their "source" -- angels are Celestia/Elysium made solid, Tan'nari are bits of the Nine Hells given form, Baatezu are the Abyss in "flesh." I don't think it's even possible for an angel to "fall" in this context, but let's stipulate that there's a "mind" or "soul" that's somehow distinct from the angel's body. In this latter case, the angel would need a new body, made out of their new plane of origin -- so they'd be retyped.
In the Real, demons (per se) *are* "fallen"/rebellious angels. The only difference between a "demon" and an angel is a demon has, through rebelling, severed their connection to Royalty.
