Americans? What's wrong with you? Seriously.
A few days ago, an American woman posted something about warning foreigners to not come to the US as it was unsafe for us.
I know she meant well, but her post reeked of "main character syndrome" something a lot of Americans suffer from. In this case, she basically was warning the NPCs that foreigners are (in many US eyes and minds), because apparently we couldn't figure it out without an American telling us. (or maybe that's because she's clueless about other countries, so she assumed we're also clueless about other countries, including hers?) In any case, she was not giving out a good image.
I replied, as nicely as I could, but also a bit sarcastically, that she didn't need to worry, we were not planning on going anyway. Adding a link showing how travel to the US from Europe has plummeted these past few months.
She replied that as she was a military kid (btw, this is not the flex you think it is with non-Americans) and as her father was on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day so this was not laughing matter.
So I replied to her that as I was a European kid and as my four grandparents lived under Nazi occupation and actually experienced it, I was not joking.
And... She blocked me, I guess. The entire conversation is gone.

So, I'm back at "where should I move this account?"
I thought Akkomane was the answer, unfortunately, it was not.
There wasn't any one deal breaker, but a few tiny ones that added up.
Namely: it doesn't work with Bridgy Fed, Thumbnails didn't appear when I shared links for some reason, and also it doesn't seem to be able to communicate with.
So, I'm back to square one.
As a reminder: I want to leave Firefish for two reasons:
1. It's dead. While it's still working great, it will not receive anymore updates ever.
2. It's API doesn't work with many apps (I'd love to be able to use this account with Surf or OpenVibe and such, and I can't)
Part of me thinks about merging this account with my Mastodon account, but I don't know. I like having two accounts talking roughly about different things (even if the limit is somewhat porous).
Another Mastodon account? I'd like to have this account not on Mastodon, basically.
Misskey and forks? (Firefish being one.) Maybe, but after having used Firefish for about two years, I think those are great if you're a community on the same server (i.e. most people on the same server know and follow each other). Also, the problem with the API is the same as with Firefish, I believe.
The new IceShrimp (the dot NET one): I'd love to try it, but it's still in beta (anyone knows of a server where I can see what it looks like?)
Something else?
GoToSocial? I admit I'm not too familiar with it. Is there a way to try it without having to install everything on a server and such?
What I'd like is something that allows long posts like this one, I can be talkative and threads are annoying).
Something using Mastodon API so that it is compatible with most apps.
Something that can communicate well with all or most of the Fediverse (including Bridgy Fed, Wordpress ActivityPub, etc.)
(ideally, a server where I know and trust the admin, but that's only in an ideal world)
Any idea I may not be aware of (note that my technical skills are somewhat limited, and no, I can't install something myself on a machine or a server)

I love my job, but if there is one thing I don't love is the number of emails I get every day (and it has gotten better since they moved a bunch of university-wide unimportant things to a bulletin board I can safely ignore) to the point that when I'm on vacation, like right now, I still need to check my work email from time to time.
Don't get mistaken, I don't work during my vacation (that would be insane), I just need to sort emails, otherwise, in 10 days, I'll return to work with 200 emails waiting for me.
So what I do is basically check what emails don't directly concern me. They go to trash. Emails about things that will happen during my vacation. They go, unread, to the archive. And emails that directly concern and require my attention. They go to a folder I'll only open when I return to work. Very urgent email that need my immediate attention? Same folder. And if they're very urgent, with some luck, the situation will have been dealt with in my absence.

I understand that, but yes, I can, not using Insta is pretty much impossible at the moment (it is for me, so I don't see how it wouldn't be for her.) At least we're "lucky" for some reason, here in Japan, Meta will continue fact checking (at least for now.)
And yes, I'm all about teaching her instead of forbidding, but at the moment, she's not really willing to learn from Dad (she's in her "I'm not a kid anymore, my parents and especially my dad have nothing to teach me anymore" phase)

What do you all think? And by "you all" I mean people living in Japan.
At a time it's wise to leave Meta or, if not possible, reduce our activity there to a minimum. I'm facing a conundrum.
Just like every Japanese teen, my daughter wants to use Instagram. I told her she could when she turns 13 (and she's already not happy about that because all of her friends are already 13 and/or have parents who don't care or are not very computer-literate).
She'll be 13 soon, but... well... It's a terrible idea to join Meta right now. But it's also not a good idea to cut my daughter from a major thing for Japanese teen (and she'll be mad at me for years if I refuse to install Instagram on her phone)
And I get it, while I've been using Facebook daily for 20 years now (yep, I had a .edu e-mail address back when it was the only way to join) I'm slowly but surely quitting. However, I barely use Instagram but it's impossible to not use it at all when you live in Japan.
Of course, I mentioned Pixelfed (but I think the age limit is 16 for some reason) but she's not exactly a trendsetter among her friends.
Hmmm....
So, parents of teens in Japan, what's your take on this?

Exactly. Ogijima used to have a shitload of stray cats (about 200) and it started to become famous as a cat island, which first baffled me because those cats were nasty and not healthy for the most part. But cat tourists don't see the reality, they only see what they imagine seeing. One day I saw an otaku looking guy, sitting in the middle of a dozen cats who were all over him, and he looked like it was the best moment of his life. All I could think was how many diseases and fleas he was going to bring back home.
But the worst was the cat tourists behavior overall. They didn't care about the island at all, nor about its inhabitants. They would run around hunting for cats, they would enter private properties, it was insane.
Luckily, one day, the islanders had had enough (although some wanted to use the cats to promote tourism, despite how destructive those tourists were) and all the cars were spaded.
Their numbers dwindled very quickly (that will let you imagine how healthy there were) and nowadays there is only a dozen or so, and cat tourists move on to another place.

These days, when I give a written assignement to my students, I get three kinds of results.
1. Those who write everything in Japanese first, and then translate with DeepL at best, a shitty automatic translator at worst.
T2. hose who write in Japanese first, and then translate manually. Better, but still not great. I don't fully blame them, they were brainwashed by some teachers in high school to think that expressing yourself in another language means expressing yourself in your language and then translate (even some good students suffer from this.) Teachers who think that teaching English is translating every English they encounter into Japanese (and then you wonder why Japan has abysmal rankings in foreign languages proficiency)
3. Those who actually write in English themselves, but who don't seem aware of the existence of spelling and grammar checkers.

So, I've been reading Fire & Ice. I really like it. But...
Let me explain...
I've reached the end of Viserys's reign, and I'm wondering if I should continue reading for now.
Some context:
I started reading it because some idiots online heavily spoiled one major plot point of House of the Dragon (I've enver seen anyone freely spoil Games of Thrones, why is it that apparently House of the Dragon is fair game?) and I didn't want to be spoiled more. (It's something that hasn't happened on the show yet - apparently Joffrey already spoiled it in season one or two of Game of Thrones, but I didn't remember it, it's just a throwaway line)
I liked the beginning of the book (Aegon the Conqueror, Maegor) and I loved the tale of Jaehaerys's reign. I really felt that the characters were as fleshed out as the format allows (not a narrative in the traditional sense of the term, but a "history book") and his story was really compelling.
But then, I found the reign of Viserys's quite underwhelming and somewhat expedited. On the other hand, I loved the character of Viserys in House of the Dragon, he's probably one of my favorite Westerosi characters from the TV shows.
None of the other characters (appearing on the show) are really fleshed out in the book. (except maybe Corlys and Daemon, but barely)
I found the contrast with Jaehaerys's story quite jarring.
So am I biaised because I saw the show first and the characters are obviously more developed in the show? And in that case, maybe I should stop reading the book until the show ends and hope I don't get spoiled more in the meantime (that's four years)
Or did you also find a real dip in quality during Viserys's reign, but it gets better after? Maybe GRR Martin was not that interested in him and rushed to get to the juicy parts, and the Dance of the Dragons is really well written and worth reading first?

Alright, I try to talk less and less about US politics online for a bunch of reasons. Mostly: I'm not American and this shouldn't be a part of my life, and I'm doing my best so that it doesn't become a bigger part of my online life than it should. (because of that, I have muted a bunch of related keywords and I may or may not see your replies, so that you know.)
So...
Here is how I think things are going to go with this US election. It's a feeling I had since the day Harris became Trump's opponent, and it only becomes stronger and stronger every day, even more so after this debate.
Trump and his team (or at least his team, it's unclear how much he's aware of his surroundings) have given up on trying to win the election. Just given up.
They know they've already lost.
What they're going to do is deny that the results are legit, just like in 2020, but with more force and more planning, and they're going to attempt a coup. An actual coup. Much better prepared and planned than what they tried on January 6th.
And today's debate was a part of this. What every sane person saw was a guy who's totally crazy rambling nonsense, but never forget that when he does that regardless of whether he realizes it or no, he's not talking to you. He's not talking to the mysterious and elusive undecided voters. He's talking to his base.
He's not trying to convince anyone with his ramblings. He's trying to energize his base. He's trying to make them angrier than ever. He's firing them up for the after the election.

One thing that depresses me the most about Japanese culture is that the country has some amazing musicians with some very unique and creative styles, but all the media and most of the population cares about is J-Pop and K-Pop, which are, let's admit it, some of the shittiest music I have heard in my life.
And it greatly saddens me when that's all kids here know because that's all most of them get to hear in their lives.
Actually, when one of my students tells me that they listen to another genre of music, I can't help it, but suddenly, my interest is this student is piqued, because I know they're going to be interesting. (It doesn't mean they're a better student, just that they will have an interesting personality, and it's almost always the case.)

I heard people call Himeji "off the beaten path." Himeji!
In my area, yes, the art islands. Naoshima gets about one million visitors a year nowadays, that's how "off the beaten path" it is. (it was 15 years ago, indeed, not anymore.)
Also, Iya Valley and its huge ugly parking lot the size of a large supermarket parking lot right next to the Kazurabashi. Very off the beaten path.

Brown is not dark red. Brown is a mix of all three primary colors.
Burgundy is dark red.
Yes, language affects how we perceive certain concepts, but only very slightly.
Russian speakers see the same tones of colors as English speakers do.
Multilingual people's perception of the world doesn't change when they code switch or change the language of their thinking.
The Sapir–Whorf hypothesis has been mostly disproven. (And is very monolingual Anglophone centric)

Ici, j'ai vraiment trouvé des gens et été trouvé par des gens grâce aux hashtags et à la facilité que l'on a tous à se suivre les uns les autres.
Sur BlueSky, l'engagement est proche du zéro. J'ai peut-être un ou deux likes tous les trois ou quatre posts. J'ai vraiment l'impression d'y parler dans le vide. Alors que l'UI est très chouette et l'ambiance (j'ose le dire) meilleure qu'ici. (il n'y a pas tous les Talibans qui t'excommunient toutes les deux secondes si tu ne penses pas exactement comme eux sur tel sujet ou tel autre).
