so why not have a no-LLM-code policy?

2026-09-08 19:10:41 UTC

if you don’t trust the external contributors to follow your policies, why do you accept their submissions at all? someone could just as easily copy/paste proprietary code from their employer into a submission if they’re disregarding your policies anyway

but I thought your default assumption was that all your developers would ignore your policies and sneakily do whatever they want anyway https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/117236842404215988

so why does the agents.md in your repo say to hide the LLM use by not disclosing it in the commit message?

uh huh.
you could easily avoid any future “””misunderstandings””” of this sort by simply having a “no LLM code” policy, like many other major open source projects

The PR: we use LLMs for code review ONLY. Look at our process.
Okay. Let’s take a look at the process.
The [Agents.md](https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/blob/8f3a12a8bbe39c117fd02891bc8542022a952055/AGENTS.md ):

Human Emacs, an initiative to keep emacs free of LLM code, via a fork if necessary, is looking for more folks to sign on in support. If you use emacs and have strong feelings about language models, I encourage you to check it out at https://human-emacs.org/

the right will moan endlessly about women in media not being sexually attractive to them because of “woke” or whatever while completely ignoring that this movie completely removed the Manly Man protag banging two literal goddesses so that nolan could pretend the odyssey is a stereotypical love story with protestant social mores (which it is extremely not)

your comment somewhere in this thread that it just looks like any other action movie in other formats gives me the depressing thought that it is intentional
In their minds, Richie Rich has Good Important Critical Thoughts About Movies and Classy Taste and therefore deserves the full format but the average pleb just wants actionslop so fuck it crop it down they won’t give a fuck

I don’t understand why people are so allergic to just letterboxing shit that’s a different format than the screen you’re watching on. Like sure the black bars aren’t my favorite thing ever but I’d rather that than have it arbitrarily chopped up just to make sure every pixel on my screen gets to light up

in college a crow took a dislike of me for some reason - I swear I never and would never intentionally harm a crow, and I never understood why - and would dive at the back of my head cawing very loudly if I cut through a certain parking lot where it hung out. It never like, actually attacked or even pooped at me that I can recall but it remains an extraordinarily unpleasant experience and I endorse going out of your way to stay on the good side of the local corvids

If you are sharing something you want other people to use or purchase, the landing page should explain what it is and does. This sounds obvious, but a catastrophic number of open source projects and even businesses fail to do this
I cannot count the number of times someone has dropped into a technical channel/forum/whatever with their thing and I have to ask them multiple times “okay but what does it *do*” even after reading all obvious material and I am usually surprised by the answer

I have been thinking along these lines. I spent most of my school years at a homeschool co-op (which my mother helped run for most of that time, even) and while it certainly wasn’t perfect it was a damn sight better for me (and I think a lot of my neurodivergent peers) than public school at the time would have been. As public schools get increasingly fucked I expect this to be a significant community need. I don’t know exactly what to do but… something.

HRT over the counter and free
Puberty blockers free at every school nurse
All transition surgeries and hair removal free
Prosecute “conversion therapy” torturers
Strip nonprofit status from any org which refuses to allow trans people to use the correct facilities

You may hear discussions about trans kids in schools and the ways teachers are required to treat them. When thinking about and discussing this, please understand:
The presence of 1 (one) accepting adult in a trans kid’s life - literally *any adult*, not just family - reduces their risk of suicide attempts by [roughly 40%](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9991447/ ).

You know how it feels when you walk through a spiderweb and you catch it right in the face? You get the immediate, visceral disgust reaction and try to GET IT OFF as quick as possible.
But like, nobody can really see it. You can’t see it well, so you kind of flail around trying to catch enough of it to get it off of you, and everyone just sees you flailing around is like “what’s up with them??” cause they can’t see it either.
And then even after you get off (which is such a relief!!) it still sometimes feels like there’s some caught in your hair (even if there isn’t) or something crawling on you (even if there isn’t), which makes you mess around even more trying to get rid of it.
Anyway, gender dysphoria is like having a spiderweb on your face your entire life and transition is flailing around trying to get it off.
Thanks to my transmasc friend Ty who has no public online presence for this analogy.

Linux is finally ready for the desktop, right as we turn the corner into “nobody but tech nerds has a desktop”

2025-03-29 16:27:19 UTC

Linux workstation report: the desktop experience is about a decade behind the modern experience, which means everything works more less out of the box with a googling here and there and is pretty pleasant to use after some quality time with the the settings dialog.
This is a considerable step up from the out of the box experience with a Mac, which demands you sign into things right away and wants money for fairly basic software, and especially windows, which is an outright assault.

Are packet radio worms allowed by FCC rules?
Like as long as the transmitting station properly identifies and does not obfuscate the purpose of the message, and arguably publicly documents the message, I don’t see anything in Part 97 prohibiting it. Nothing really addresses the possibility of an unauthorized takeover of an automatically or remotely controlled station; arguably 97.219(c) and (d) indicate that responsibility for transmissions would remain with the control operator of the station regardless.
This question is entirely academic, to be clear; as cool as I think the idea is I definitely don’t have the time to write a worm right now lol

I think the point I’m trying to make is that I want the other way around too; that bluesky devs should understand why those of us who refuse to touch it don’t want to be there. But that would be against their interests, to be honest, so I don’t hold out much hope
I’m not even sure it’s “too lazy”; see also that thread going around a while back talking about how eugen keeps writing shittier versions of PRs from trans women who put a shitload of work into them and then got ignored

I wanna be clear I’m zero percent disagreeing with your general point here. People go to bluesky because it’s legit better for their use case and mastodon devs need to pay attention to why that is.
Also being on a small instance run by and for trans folks is the best experience I’ve had with social media, period. We don’t federate with what seems to be a substantial portion of “fedi” and I’ve never missed it; I will not be joining bluesky because even with good blocking tools (which fedi badly needs, tbc) I feel much more secure here than in one big shared space where I need to block thousands of people (even if doing so is easy). That depends on the work of my awesome instance admin (thanks @npub1qdd…2qrs!) for sure and that’s not scalable, but like, there IS
a reason there’s a fair few trans folks on here.

Did you know that the CIA has a declassified field manual detailing the kinds of sabotage an ordinary person can do with lots of plausible deniability? With like, details for both specific industries and also general office work? I’ll quote some of the office work section, but the whole thing is only 20 pages.
“(1) Insist on doing everything though “channels." Never permit shortcuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions.
(…)
(4) Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible.
(5) Haggle over precise wordings of communications, minutes, resolutions.
(G) Refer back to matters decided upon at the last meeting and attempt to re-open the question of the advisability of that decision.
(…)
(8) Be worried about the propriety of any decision — raise the question of whether such action as is contemplated lies within the jurisdiction of the group or whether it might confict with the policy of some higher eschelon.”
