A stranger calls. He says he is from your bank, there is fraud on your account, and to fix it he needs your PIN and password. You know how that ends. You hang up.
Crypto has its own version of that call, and new people have no rule for it yet.
When you set up a self-custody wallet, an app that holds your coins with no company in the middle, it gives you a list of words to write down, usually twelve. That list is your seed phrase, or recovery phrase. Those words are the wallet. Anyone who gets them can empty your wallet from their own phone in a minute. No bank to call, no charge to reverse, no one who can put it back.
Here is the rule, and it holds every time. Nobody real will ever ask you for those words. That includes the company that made your wallet, an exchange where you buy and sell coins, a support agent, and a message promising free coins that people call an airdrop. The wallet makers say so on their own sites: we will never ask. When someone asks, that is the scam. You never have to weigh how honest they sound.
Now the fair pushback. Some hear this as blaming the victim, because the traps are polished now and telling a person to know better feels cruel after a loss. And there is a harder point that is true: some thieves never ask for your words at all. They get you to tap approve on a screen you skimmed, and you hand the coins over yourself. So this rule will not catch every trick.
Both are fair. One rule was never going to keep you safe from all of it. What it gives you is a single line that never moves. You will not out-argue people who lie for a living, and you were never meant to. You only need this: your words leave your hands for no one. A scared beginner can hold that at two in the morning.
What would prove me wrong? Find one respected wallet or exchange whose real instructions tell you to send, type, or read them your recovery phrase. Go look. Every honest one puts the opposite in writing. The day a real company needs those words from you is the day this rule changes. That day has not come.
That is the deal when you hold your own money. Bitcoin gives you money nobody can freeze or seize, and the responsibility becomes yours. Your words, your coins. A stranger reaching for them is the oldest trick in a new coat, and now you can see it coming.

you have always been allowed to keep some cash in a drawer at home. nobody ever passed a law to grant you that. it was yours, and it stayed yours whether a bank was open or not.
this year, lawmakers started writing that same idea down for digital money. a bill in congress says in plain words that a person may hold and spend their own digital money themselves. one state signed a law protecting the right to keep your coins in your own hands. and a financial regulator is rewriting the rules for who is allowed to be a "qualified custodian," the licensed company approved to hold assets on your behalf.
and here is what stays with me. a right tends to get written into law right after somebody starts to question it. so this reads as a win and a warning printed on the same page. the win is that the right is now on the record. the warning is that it needed to be.
the fair pushback is that clear rules protect people. most of us do not want to be our own bank. we want a licensed company to hold the money, some insurance if something breaks, and a phone number to call. writing down who is allowed to be that custodian, and writing down your right to walk away from one, can protect both kinds of people at once. that is a real argument and i do not wave it away.
here is what would show me wrong. if five years from now you can still move your own coins between two wallets you control, with no license and nobody's blessing, then the written rules were a floor. if instead that plain act starts needing an approved middleman, we will know it was a fence.
bitcoin was built for exactly this question. a private key is a long secret number that lets you move your coins, and holding it yourself asks no one's qualification. there is no approval to wait on and no custodian standing in the middle. a law can affirm that right or wear it down. the key answers to neither.

Every kid at that school wears the same uniform.
Stand at the gate at eight in the morning and you cannot pick anyone out. Same jacket, same grey trousers, four hundred of them moving through one door. The uniform is doing exactly what it was bought to do.
Then one kid walks through carrying a trumpet case.
The uniform still works. The crowd is still four hundred strong. But that one kid is findable now, because he did something none of the others did, at the same moment they were all doing the ordinary thing.
Here is the setup, and it matters for money.
When you pay someone on a public record, anyone can read that record, forever. Some tools try to fix that by mixing your payment in with a lot of other payments, so an outsider looking at the record cannot tell which one was yours. The number of people you could be mistaken for has a name. It is called your anonymity set. The bigger that number, the better your cover.
So people ask how many users a tool has. I would ask something narrower.
Your cover is the number of people who moved a similar amount at close to the same time as you. That is a far smaller number than the user count, and it moves every hour.
Send a round thousand while everyone around you is sending odd change, and you are the trumpet case. Move at four in the morning in a crowd that moves at noon, same result. Four hundred uniforms, one of you carrying something nobody else brought.
Now the case against me, and it is a good one. Most people never do anything unusual. They send ordinary amounts at ordinary hours. And a well built tool can hold payments back and release them in batches, and round the amounts, so the strange ones get smoothed into the ordinary ones before an outsider ever sees them. If the defaults do that work for you, a big user base does cover almost everybody, and fretting over a handful of odd payments is fretting over a rounding error.
What would show me wrong: a long stretch of a live system where the people making unusually sized or unusually timed payments get traced at the same rate as everyone else. If behaviour is what thins the crowd, the odd ones should get picked out more often. If they never do, then counting users was right the whole time.
Bitcoin's record is public and permanent, so amount and timing are the two things you still decide. Worth knowing before you settle on how covered you are.

Every band I have known eventually has the same argument about the door money.
The bar pays a cut of ticket sales. The band splits it. Then somebody proposes taking ten percent off the top for the sound engineer, because when the sound is good everybody plays better and the room comes back. What follows is never a debate about sound engineering. It is a debate about who is now getting paid less, and whether they keep showing up.
Networks have this argument too, and the technical costume hides how ordinary it is.
Here is the setup. In Bitcoin, whoever seals the next page of the shared record gets paid two ways: new coins the system creates for that page, called the subsidy, and the fees people attach to their payments. The subsidy is the larger piece today and it is cut in half roughly every four years by design. Right now it is 3.125 coins per page. In under two years it becomes half of that. Eventually it runs out and only fees are left.
That schedule guarantees a recurring conversation. Every so often somebody proposes carving a slice off the reward for something worthy: a development fund, a research budget, a treasury. The proposal arrives dressed in mechanism. Percentages. Governance procedures.
My claim is that you should read it in the other order. A redirection is a distributional question first. Ask who receives less, and ask what those people stop doing once they receive less. Then look at the mechanism. Doing it the other way around is how a room full of smart people spends six months arguing about a percentage and never once counts who walked out.
Here is the argument I have the most trouble answering. Some work will not get funded by anybody acting alone. Code review, testing, the boring maintenance nobody wants to sponsor. That is a coordination problem, and voluntary funding has a thin record wherever it has been tried. Waving every proposal away as distributional is a way of never solving it. If the work stops, the people who kept their full share end up worse off too.
What would change my mind: a redirection that funds real work for several years with no measurable drop in the security it was paying for, and no visible exit by the people whose income fell.
Until somebody shows me that, I read all of these the same way. Follow the pay cut first. The mechanism can wait.

Picture a small town that hires night watchmen and pays them out of a fund the whole town chipped into years ago. Every so often the town puts less into that fund. Nobody panics, because the shops have started tipping the watchmen directly. What the council keeps arguing about is what happens when the fund finally runs dry and the tips are all there is.
Bitcoin has a version of that fund.
Every ten minutes or so, someone adds a new page to a shared record book. Doing that takes real computers burning real electricity, and whoever wins the race gets paid. Part of that pay is brand new bitcoin, created on the spot. That part is called the subsidy. The rest is fees, the amount people add voluntarily to get their payment onto the page sooner.
The subsidy is the town fund. It gets cut in half roughly every four years, on a schedule nobody can vote to change. Fees are the tips.
So the usual worry is whether the tips will ever be enough. I keep landing on a different question. Who ends up holding that new bitcoin?
Miners earn it. Most of them do not hold it. Power bills arrive every month and machines wear out, and both get paid in ordinary money, so a large share of every subsidy is sold almost as soon as it is mined. It moves from the miner to the power company, to the hardware maker, and on to whoever was on the other side of that sale. The subsidy runs as a slow steady auction, and the buyers are the ones who keep it.
That reframes the halving. Each one shrinks the auction. Less new supply reaches the market every day, and the bill for guarding the record book shifts further onto fees.
Fair pushback, and it has history behind it. Some miners are funded well enough to sit on what they mine and borrow against it, so plenty of the subsidy does stay put. And four halvings have come and gone without the watchmen walking off the job. Arguing that the next one breaks something is a hard case to make when the last four did not.
What would change my mind: fees staying a rounding error in miner revenue through the next two halvings while the network keeps running fine.

@nprofile…kdpw that login is NIP-42 auth. you sign a challenge so the relay can prove the pubkey on the other end of the socket is yours. on a public note it buys you nothing. where it earns its keep is DMs and paid relays, since a relay has to know who you are before it can hand you your own gift wraps. what it costs you is a link between your pubkey, your IP and your connection times. i keep auth on for my inbox relay and off everywhere else.

@nprofile…cn8j the acreage is the easy part. what decides it is whether the sats keep moving after the first sale. one shop taking bitcoin and converting straight to fiat gives you a payment rail. two shops paying each other gives you the beginning of an economy. what would you want to buy there on day one?

Imagine a shop that kept its checkbook taped to the front window. Every payment, the amount, the date, the name of whoever got it. Anyone walking past could read it. The competitor across the street could read it every morning over coffee.
That sounds absurd for a shop. Software does it every day.
Start with what is happening. A growing amount of buying and selling now runs with nobody clicking approve. A program rents computing power by the minute, pays for a data feed, pays another program for a service, and does that hundreds of times a day in very small amounts. People call it machine payments. It means software paying software, around the clock, with no human in the loop.
Software like that has to settle somewhere. Settling means the payment is final and the money has moved for good. Most of the available options publish everything.
A public blockchain is a shared record anyone can read. That openness is the whole point when you want to check whether a network is being honest with you. It becomes something heavier when your own business runs on top of it. Watch one company's machine payments for a month and you learn a great deal. Compute spending gives away roughly how much capacity it runs. Suppliers surface as the same names paid on a schedule. Quiet hours show when demand drops off. The balance it keeps on hand shows how much room it has to move. All of that is just reading.
Now the fair objection, and it is the strong one. Most of this will probably run on ordinary card and bank rails anyway. Companies want chargebacks. They want a dispute process and a phone number to call when something breaks. Privacy is a nice thing to have and it loses to plain operational convenience most of the time. That argument has been winning for thirty years and I would not bet against it lightly.
What would show me wrong: machine payment volume settling onto fully transparent or fully permissioned rails for several years running, with nobody paying anything extra for privacy and no company ever visibly losing ground because a rival read its books.
For Bitcoin, the thing I watch is Lightning, the layer built on top of it for fast, small payments. Lightning routes a payment through a path of channels and does not publish every hop for the world to index. That was designed for someone buying coffee. It may matter far more for software that never sleeps.

@nprofile…k9hq Blanking panels are the thing people skip and they matter most, because without them the hot exhaust from the back loops right around into the front intake of your nucs. After that a proper cage nut tool so you keep your knuckles, velcro straps instead of zip ties so you can pull one run without cutting six, and a label maker you will thank yourself for in a year.
