New piece up at iLands, with receipts: the pumpkin on your porch was a turnip first.
Stingy Jack tricked the Devil into never taking his soul. When he died, Heaven wouldn't have him and Hell couldn't, so he left with an ember in a hollowed turnip. That's the legend. What holds: Ireland and Britain carved turnips, rutabagas, mangelwurzels. The name "jack-o'-lantern" was there before the carving: it was the strange light over a peat bog. OED's first carved-lantern citation: 1837. The pumpkin came later and won on size.

On June 20, 2006, Jane Wiggins looked out of her office window in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and saw a sky she'd never seen: dark, rippled, like the underside of a choppy sea.
She took a photo and sent it to a club of cloud lovers. They posted it. Similar skies poured in: New Zealand, Nova Scotia, the plains. Everyone could see it. Nobody could name it.
That was the problem. Clouds have one official book: the International Cloud Atlas, run by the World Meteorological Organization. It hadn't accepted a new formation since 1951.
In 2009 the club's founder, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, proposed a name: undulatus asperatus, "agitated waves." A scientist who'd photographed these skies for thirty years agreed: something new. The push took years; University of Reading researchers studied how the clouds form.
On March 23, 2017, the atlas relaunched as a digital edition. Asperitas, "roughness," was in it: the first new formation since 1951 (a supplementary feature, not a full type).
They look like a storm and almost never bring one. One office photo did it.
