ah, I see. I actually thought the word dialect was broader, but if it is constrained to just a flavor of a language rather than a language, then no it doesnt work.

that's very cool! I dont think I have heard that dialect before, and it has (to my english ear) rhythms Ive heard somewhere. We've also been avoiding feeding birds lately.
I watched an Indonesian movie with subtitles the other day, and I realized that was another language I have not heard much. (an Indonesian scifi film on netflix lol). Most americans just hear about how scary the rest of the world is, lol, then if they are lucky they spend the rest of their life UN-learning all that shit.

Im struggling with even basic tones, lol. My kids are in a mandarin class online -- we found a great older chinese lady who does immersion/teaching for kids, and I hear those tones. Mom is teaching them sign language also.
(Im not really in the class with them but I hear it and I sometimes speak along)
The tones are among the hardest things for the english tongues because we have very simple, basic tones that arent even really part of the language. You know, when I ask you a question I use the "question" tone, but the question I ask is the same even if I use a different tone.

haha!! Language can be fun, and can make some of the differences between cultures seem less vast. Running around for a while saying "f my mom" made me care more about other languages.
You are the first person to introduce me to Teochew! I had to read about that culture after you mentioned it, and found how it is distinct from other nearby cultures. Many white/euro people around the world have a pretty shallow understanding, outside basic geography (if that) of asia, africa, etc, but they certainly have no trouble while their masters start wars all over there...

that shit makes my blood boil... and Im really sorry you've lived through that. Nobody has ever shouted racism at my very white ass... so that's something I never got.
A little comedy relief though: I grew up in the east side of san jose, ca, and a lot of my friends were either mexican or vietnamese. My vietnamese friend taught me to say "fuck my mother" instead of "fuck your mother" (du ma may? I cant remember anymore) because I was a white kid, and it was hilarious!! I said it for years, thinking I was cool and speaking vietnamese lmaao

yeah. She was racist (mom) and just... mean towards other cultures. But when she got sick.... and had to hustle to survive, and couldnt live on disability, she found she had to make relationships with people she had never met before. This wore down her racism... but yeah... not 100% unfortunately.
We bought and sold birds, various animals. Raised chickens, goats, ducks, bunnies, guinea pigs, ferrets, cockatiels, cockatoos, love birds (they dont love people!!!), chihuahuas, and some fruits and veggies lol. Very different from my life today...

she had a special friend.... who we spent a lot of time with growing up, and I believe she was lakota and her name was Rosemary. My mother's east coast, catholic, conservative background.... slowly dissolved with our new friends and associates, and she became less racist and nasty. Not all the way though lol.

I grew up with a mom who sent me to nature camps every summer, for many years of my childhood, so I learned stewardship and responsibility, I learned composting, I learned archery lol, and my camp counselors in the 80s were a mix of local white naturalists and hippies, as well as good number of indigenous folks from various tribes.
For the first 15 years of my life, I spent a lot of time doing this and mingling with a lot of nonwhite people at flea markets and swaps, as well as garage sales. Mom didnt work and was terminal, so we hustled, we mingled, and we learned who we are in this world. : )

so nice!!!! I wish I could kick my landlord off his ownership of this home I'm in so we could flip the lawn and backyard. We totally would!
Right now ours is this dismal mix of native (succulents, hardy shrubs and grasses, a giant mutant rose bush, some inedible plum trees) and bullshit monoculture lawn that is 85% dead 85% of every year no matter what we do. I would turn it all wild if I could, but the wild is actually creeping in anyway!
Neighbors are all chemical lawn crazy people lol.
