oh I phrased that very carefully. :)
I know people studying HTML/CSS purely as an art form, fucking rad! That was intended as The Point of my post, against arguments that the web is toooo complicated for it now.
I think instead, we've lost discoverability. I'm not sure the same pipeline into & through it still exists? Or I expect it's much harder to fall into – less opportunities for play built into the walled gardens. Less chance to 'customize myspace' etc?

2026-04-12 06:10:04 UTC

- reply

yeah, that's true. I also don't see specialization as neutral or natural, but as corporate. and also think the constant drive to deliver - the coveted efficiency of speed - tends to encourage complexity (and other broken things).

2026-04-12 04:19:07 UTC

the more we're all encouraged to optimize our time and deliver more output, the more i want to never hit a single metric again in my life.
i want to commit on a project and never launch it. i want to code slower, spend more time choosing colors, re-invent wheels that will never get used - not better, just different - taking as long as possible.
i want to spend my time imagining different ways to say a thing, just to enjoy saying it differently.
zero output, always only process forever

2026-04-12 04:01:41 UTC

There are still absolutely beautiful websites using basic css and html with little or no js. professional web dev has gotten more complex along with specialization, but you can still build personal sites with 20yr old tech. and some new stuff is simpler.
What we've lost, it seems to me, is the broad indie pipeline to both learning and socializing (and socially learning).
partly because we who learned it 20yrs ago have landed in more specialized/complex jobs.

RadioShack went out of business, sadly.
Oh, you were thinking a magnet might work without the reed being near the top of the jar. That's interesting, but might take a pretty strong magnet, I think.

2026-01-10 17:41:12 UTC

- reply

no breadboards or reed switches. yet!
This was the first approach I was thinking about, and I like the simplicity. Might be even simpler with some kind of lever/leaf switch that is pushed open by the gallery of the lid, as it slots down inside?
In either case, the main concern is mounting, and wires casting shadows - but all that requires a prototype to know if it's a real issue.

2026-01-10 16:58:55 UTC

- reply

it could be that i need to prototype a few things. just drop a puck light in the base, or tape it in the lid, and see how things look before I spend to much time on complex switches.

2026-01-10 16:32:30 UTC

- reply

i'm hoping for both a glow and light out the top. the extreme simplified version is buying a lamp kit, mounting a standard bulb at the base, and running a cable out the side. the jar is just a lamp shade.
From there the question is if I can make it more magical.

2026-01-10 15:57:37 UTC

- reply

more convenient except that turned off you have a lid full of electronics sitting around, rather than the whole thing being packed away.
For light, I'm imaging a ring of led pointing up but kinda out near the edges.
But you're right that recharging will be a pain. I could put a hole for a charging wire at the base, but that could still be fiddly.

2026-01-10 08:15:55 UTC

- reply

I think I'll need brighter lights, since the porcelain I'm using is only somewhat translucent. It looks great when I hold a jar up to the under-cabinet puck lights in my kitchen.

2026-01-10 07:43:20 UTC

- reply

All I want is a glowing jar of light that I can carry around. Is that too much to ask?

2026-01-10 07:43:13 UTC

Is it reasonable to think I could make an LED lamp inside a porcelain jar, with a proximity sensor to turn it on when the lid is open?
I see adafruit has sensors & LEDs, but I'm not sure how much circuit design would be required (zero experience) or how many lights & how much power I need.
I imagine it only becomes practical as a table lamp if I make it plug-in, but a battery option would be magical. Electronics should be small at the base of the jar.

I often think about making a new browser. I mean, as a business it sounds awful. But as a product to design, that would be a top choice.
Browsers could help us make fun little websites with rss feeds, and follow our friends feeds. Your window to the web could also be your home online - customized & shareable, with open web standards.
(Not a bot that says likely words scraped of context. What a total lack of vision for the web)
Put myspace in a browser, you cowards.

Ok, we have a clamp() function. Take any value and clamp it between a min and max.
But what if we had an un-clamp() function? Take any value, and imagine if it was unconstrained. What value *could* it be instead, living it's best authentic life? No responsibilities - no mortgage, and no boss.
Let your CSS values explore their true passion with un-clamp().

Seeing a lot of posts about generating OpenGraph images for 11ty posts, and suddenly realized my new approach will fail.
I generate an html page, and I just want to snapshot that page in a build step. Right now it's looking for a URL, but (obviously) the URL doesn't exist yet. That's the point.
But all the other approaches involve non-html image generation, or HTML/CSS limitations. And I don't want to do that. I just want my thing to work, please. Thanks.

CSS Working Group resolved to allow range syntax in style queries. We can compare with a container variable:
@ container style(--var < 5em)
But can also compare normal values:
style(1em < 20px)
style(sibling-count() > 3)
This style function can also be used for conditions of inline if()

- Bender: As an expert in linguistics, we have a pretty good grasp on "meaning" vs "form". LLMs are just putting words together. People will read meaning into it, but that's a lie. People will get hurt.
- OpenAI Guy: If people read meaning into it, there's meaning in it *for them*. If things go wrong, that's a user problem. Capitalism, baby.

What if there was a co-op of developer educators? What if we built our own platform together? I bet that's a skill we have. Everyone could still post on other platforms as well, but this one we would own and manage together?
I bet there's an audience, and even a profit-sharing business model that would make sense.
Can we imagine collaboration?

It's actually slightly more difficult on the same server, but i don't mind if you want to.
To do it on one server you need to get yourself an invite link (in your preferences), log out, and set up a new account. Or use browser profiles/different browsers. Or there are third-party tools that might allow logging into multiple at once.
With different servers, there's no conflicting logins issue to deal with.

The oss 'benevolent dictator' model was always a bad one, always built on an imagined 'best way to get things done' which frames collaboration as impossible, and was always a setup for claiming the rich tech guys are the best guys.

Yeah, that's what I've always done (multi-slide reveals) - but I did add an issue to consider in-slide reveals, and I'd enjoy working on that with you if you want.
It relates broadly to another feature I've wanted: named slides with stable IDs for internal linking. (Both require more flexibility to how we handle the forward/backward navigation logic)

When we "keep specificity flat" in #CSS we have to give up on semantic selectors and built-in naming conventions, in return for… also giving up control in the cascade.
We can't avoid the cascade, it applies to all styles. We can only refuse to use the tools that are available for *managing* the cascade.
Start using Cascade Layers, and let your specificity run wild. It's a useful tool!

2024-12-10 07:51:58 UTC

I am very tired of conference talks that start by telling me
- everyone is excited
- these tools are the future
- now is the time to get on board
- you don't want to be left behind
You do not need to be excited for the machine they wish could replace you already

I keep thinking about that line, something like "AI is just the tech we're not used to yet" as though don't worry, we'll get used to it.
but I think it's rather the goal of "AI" as a product - to be the magic trick. why did it give that answer? who can say! ✨

2024-12-10 07:01:08 UTC

People now trust 'information' coming from black box algorithms controlled by just a few companies, as though they have "looked it up" somewhere,
but also we can copy/paste relevant code snippets, with some amount of success! so it's great, actually! ✨
this industry is fucking stressful

If cool URIs don't change, maybe they shouldn't be managed by landlords and rented on a year-to-year basis.
(it seems to me that avoiding link rot should be treated as a platform issue, not a slogan for scolding people who didn't successfully predict the future or treat a webpage as a lifelong commitment)

It works great for me. I've never bothered with in-slide reveals on mine, but that's a cool feature. I just filed an issue for myself to look into it. :)

It looks like an excellent talk, but mostly I'm excited that you built your own HTML presentation tool! Fun! 🥳

There it is, thank you! I can do that.
It's a very long scooter ride from here, but that's why god created friends with podcasts. So I can listen to you and Brian talk about the web, or @npub1t0w…zgs2 get flustered by "Be Gay Do Crimes" 😄 (perfect content, no notes)

I know this is a Bad question that will lead me down the Path of Darkness. But…
Where do you start with mechanical keyboards? What I really mean is: where do you go next after having one for a bit, and thinking "yeah, this but really customized to my needs"? What do you try next? How do you test switches? It seems like the learning curve is steep and involves a lot of exploratory purchasing?

you might be able to do something so that script is rendered-blocking. Or add some hidden styling that gets removed.
The risk of course is… blocking render. :)

Yeah, rel alternate is real interesting - but I've found browsers don't update well when you change that.
I imagine you could use a preload rule to load the disabled styles before usage. Not an issue for my use-case of turning things off after page load.
Here's the quick and dirty version, with only an on/off switch: https://codepen.io/miriamsuzanne/pen/PoMGZEe

The attribute would have to be toggled with JS, if you're changing it based on user interaction. I'm using that for a CSS on/off toggle in my new design (and maybe a layer-select, TBD).

Have you tried using the disabled attribute on the unused stylesheets?

Could be. Or we'll start to find more use-cases for it? I already expect to use it on most sites that have any sort of image gallery. That's not my highest priority, but it is something I'll use. And for people currently relying on JS to achieve this (a lot of sites), it will be a big win. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Browsers don't always ask what I would prioritize, but when they ship something, I appreciate them spending time to get it right – because it impacts the whole language.

Firefox released the first prototype of #CSS Masonry back in 2020, as an extension to Grid layout. Now Safari TP has it as well, while Chrome is working on an alternate proposal.
I've been enjoying the discussions, and the way both proposals have improved because of the debate.
But what's the current status, what's next, and what's at stake?

This is a nice little monthly update on the support status of various features, from the Web DX community group. And it has an RSS feed!
🥳 Cascade Layers have been supported on all major browsers for 30 months! (That's the criteria used for 'widely available' in Baseline)

Starting in 1hr (10am PT) @npub1n00…0sgz and I will be Winging It live!
We're talking about #CSS grids again – starting with a mockup and some HTML (which I haven't seen yet), and talking through our process as we write the code.

The CSSWG as agreed to publish a first Working Draft for Masonry layout – with the two major proposals merged where possible, and otherwise presented side by side. Most of the differences are syntax only.
Here's the Editor's Draft that will be published:

Collaborative process is a skill that people study and practice. Most teams aren't trained in that skillset, but they could be.

Style queries and scope are the two that I don't really try to get away with yet. I just know they are missing support in a whole browser.
But light-dark is much easier to put behind a feature query, so I've been playing with it a lot in my side projects. I've been putting color-mix and oklch behind the same query even though they have better support, and then provide a fallback based mostly on browser defaults.

2024-08-07 22:30:25 UTC

:has() is at 94.41% of tracked global browser support. That's pretty good. Cascade Layers are at 96.3%.
oklch at 93% (with issues)
color-mix at 91.18%
CSS Nesting at 90% (if you're careful)
@ scope at 84.83% (0% Firefox)
light-dark() at 82.7%
custom property style queries at 73.49% (0% Firefox)
There's no magic number, and a lot we can do with progressive enhancement – but these are some of the recent #CSS features I reach for most often, and wish they would Just Work Already, Please.
