This is so inspiring!!
Sometimes I worry though that small scale adoption like this without education is a risky, like people might distrust Bitcoin when the price dips or a technical problem arises with the wallet, which has happened to me more than once when trying to onboard friends (although mainly with custodial wallets, never WoS, but either way) my point is I would love to see more educational efforts happening globally in general, but especially especially ESPECIALLY in conjunction w these initiatives.

Quick follow up question!!! Did you recommend google fi specifically for a reason or would any eSIM card do? I'm a frequent Airalo user and see they have eSIM cards for China. I have also heard Google fi can be a bit complicated for Canadians and I see the plans are for longer!

Update : I made my friend a lovely little google doc with 5 videos - most of which were the recommendations I got from you guys - to dip her toes in to the #bitcoin rabbit hole, and she was grateful 🧡
Complete with notes and a guide in which order to watch; I think the effort I put into it will make her more likely to see it all through haha. I hope this starts something!

My normie friend expressed a small spark of interest in learning about #bitcoin but specifically asked me to share it in a documentary format. Except I can't find anything 🤣 Feels like a rare chance to orange pill her but the perfect Bitcoin doc doesn't exist.
Instead I'm compiling a list of maybe 3-4 YouTube videos/short docs to recommend to her instead ... thought I'd #asknostr
Do you have recommendations for videos I could share with someone who:
- is a total beginner understands bare minimum about money/the history of money
- very unlikely to read a book about Bitcoin at this stage (she's a full time high school teacher also getting her masters; i.e. little time to spare)
- no tech background
- no economics background
I'd love to share something with her about why we need Bitcoin/why money is broken, how it actually works, and the positive human rights implications... they could be separate videos. I'm having the hardest time!!!! Lmk if you have suggestions 🥰

So... after almost a week of frustrated troubleshooting, doubting my own sanity and intelligence and almost giving up on trying to run a node at all, my mother happened to casually mention in an unrelated conversation that they never removed the old modem when she switched internet providers.
...
and that's when I realized...
I dragged her downstairs where she confirmed what I suspected; my raspberry pi was connected to the old modem. She pointed to the new one, which is nailed to the wall about 4ft higher.
Everything works perfectly. Sanity and intelligence still in question, but I'm running a #bitcoin #node in my parents' basement now 🤡

Got it!! I am currently connected to my router with a cable, the problem with the static IP is that all the directions start by assuming I can find it... looking at angry IP, I have the same number of connections when my pi is plugged in vs unplugged so I'm thinking my problem starts before this 🙁

Ahh you guys are the best.
I got everything off of the Umbrel website using the Amazon links they provide, installed and assembled everything as instructed, but I can't connect to Umbrel.local and tried all the suggested http(s) variations and none of them connect... I re-flashed the SD card with no luck. Then I downloaded angry IP to hopefully find the IP address, but it doesn't seem to show up in the scan which makes me think it's offline somehow? All the lights are on - green on flashes intermittently though, and it's connected to the router and a power source so I am PRETTY sure I have eliminated all the dumb/obvious things I could be doing wrong but you never know lol
I'm a total beginner but reasonably smart, I should be able to figure this out haha. I'm on a Mac. Also I have zero budget for other options, I really want to make what I already purchased work 🙈🙈🙈

Diagreee on the last point - its a years-long and complicated story and probably can't be explained in just an hour but sent the video cause I thought it pieces them together chronologically in a fairly neutral way. I don't get the praise for this guy. You should read his transcripts 🤮The dude ordered a bunch of murders and asked for photographic proof. Really violent stuff all motivated by capital gain. The drug charges were easier to get him on so they went that route and sentenced him heavily which is why he gets to pose with other people in prison for non violent offences but he was really sick imo and probably deserves to be where he is.
Silk Road was cool though, my biggest regret in life is getting on there to wanting to buy psychedelics in 2012 and giving up because I couldn't figure out how to buy this thing called "Bitcoin" lmao 🤡

He's only in this photo on a technicality because they charged him for the easier drug offences instead of the 6 attempted murders. Murders he ordered not for self preservation but for pure capital gain... that was probably considered in the sentencing idk all those attempted murders might actually deserve something close to that haha
