story too short
In my writing world, this never happens.
I revise, & while doing so add & subtract to enhance the story, not fix length. In fact, since I’m looking to tighten-up the story, I subtract far more than I add.
Trust in the Forgotten went from 130K to 115K. A River in Each Hand is on its way to do the same.
When I draft I KNOW I have a complete story. I learn that in the narrative outline.

character dreams
No, I don’t dream about characters from my WIP, nor do I dream about them at work, nor do I dream about characters from a workplace.
It wouldn’t matter, anyway.
I seldom remember dreams, probably because I spent most of my life actively trying not to remember them so its become habit to purge them the instant I awake. They weren’t dreams anyone would want to remember.

This is the group I long dreamed about, sometimes heard about, but never found (toxic groups abound).
It’d be 3-7 people who meet, preferably in person, & who enjoy each others company. It’d be about critiquing, but also about encouragement & sharing skills as the group as a whole works towards publication.
Having given up on this, I spun it into the found families I write in many of my stories.

When I fast draft, I draft. I don’t have much time for anything else, & most everything is a distraction.
Distractions are procrastination.
If I was going to indulge related works, I’d do so long before drafting, not during. That would give it time to percolate in my brain so I can process any possible similarities.
Which, by the way, I’ve never found.

writing for other ages
I’ve written short stories, novelettes, and novellas that would qualify as YA. Actually, 4/10 stories in what will be my first anthology are YA.
It wasn’t a conscious decision, but instead just something that happened. I had stories that entered my head that required a protagonist that age.
Then again, I have a lot of negative childhood experiences and I suppose that’s just me dealing with them.

These days, it’s mostly amateur photography, especially when I go on hiking adventures & avoid becoming bear food (someone died recently).
Drawing has become limited to what aids my writing, meaning diagrams & maps, even covers.
Even music appreciation (I’m not a musician) serves writing. I love creating character images, but use ArtBreeder (not the AI version) & Affinity Photo for that.

Riparia Dellbane opposes oppression (she is, after all, among the oppressed).
She has progressive views where people have the right to choose their path so long as they cause no harm to others.
In general, she disagrees with harmful extremism.
Given her personality, she doesn’t voice any of this, instead leaving it to others, until she’s forced to do so. Then, she discovers she has a lot to say.

I have not.
I write otherworld historical fantasy set on Ontyre, if I quoted Earth literature it’d take the reader out of the world.
I have, at moments, paid homage to works that I admire, but my approach is subtle. I might paraphrase a classic line, maybe two. I might set a scene to resemble a scene in another work. I might also hide the homage in what I name a place or animal.

I have a vague sense of the general theme in a work based on the the plot and protagonist I’ve developed for the story via narratives. I don’t write to the theme, exactly, it’s more like it’s a guiding force in the background.
When editing is when I pay more attention to the theme and note others that developed. It’s typically something that takes care of itself, but there are times when I’ll enhance it.

What a spring. Two days ago we had a virtual blizzard for over an hour, and then it promptly melted. Since then, the wind has howled. It’s my least favorite weather to walk in, but I’ll walk.
The last two days have also been creative mania as I fashioned covers for all seven books in my Kovenlore series. I’ve spent years trying to create what I wanted and then—it just happened. I’ll see how they age.

If you can draw a connection between Cat in the Hat & what I write, then yes. Otherwise, fantasy fiction entered my life at fifteen. Neither parent read fiction.
In a sense, though, fantasy was in my life from the beginning—inside my head. I’d imagine other lives, other places. Many of my characters draw from childhood imaginings I denied even to myself. My confusion & fear was that great.

For instance, via my blog I provide content that’s helpful, inspiring, or entertaining for readers.

novel that worked
I remember when LOTR was considered impossible to film, mostly because of the CGI limitations at the time (which couldn’t save the abomination that was The Hobbit).
For the most part, the films did an excellent job, focusing on the heartfelt, intimate aspects of the story while simplifying where needed & getting the settings correct.
Was it perfect? No, but it did respect its source material.

I don’t in my fiction. They don’t fit my writing style. I tend to keep my paragraphs short & semicolons aid creating long sentences & paragraphs.
They don't bother me when I read, but that isn’t how my writing voice has evolved.
Correctly? When checked for semicolon cancer it was determined that if I could pause & come to a full stop that I was fine. 😉
