I’ll assume this isn’t about cooking or placing food in your mouth with flare (maybe it is?).
So, I’ll run with it…
In story, I’ve often had a character(s) eat or drink as an activity during a scene, something done casually. It adds action and a visual backdrop.
Taken a step farther, there are dinner parties. Arguments, double meanings, glaring, furtive gazes, insinuations, touching, and so on. Manners gone wrong.

@nprofile…hf5z I'm spoiled. There are trails all around me. Literally. The three primary areas that access the wilds are all within 5 miles or less. A city trail passes by my apartment. If I take it east two miles it delivers me to the trails around Mount Sentinel (image, extreme right).
The Mission Mtns are to the north and Bitterroots to the south. The Continental Divide Trail is an hour to the east.
The image is of Missoula (mostly hidden in the distance), the Rattlesnake Wilderness behind.

@nprofile…66aw I agree. What's important is the contrast between the living and the zombies who've been stripped of their humanity. There's also the survival element and dealing with the emotions associated with watching what is happening to those around you, and that you could be next.
I've only written zombies once, but it did give me an appreciation for what the trope can be, besides a bunch of scares and gore.

It’s crazy, but I began worldbuilding Carrdia and writing its first story simultaneously, including realizing I needed at least a preliminary map.
I grabbed a scrap sheet of paper, flipped it over, and went wild sketching. At least 85% of that map endured.
What would’ve happened to my stories, I wonder, if I’d sketched a different map?

Whether I move, and how much, depends on the music and what I’m doing. If just listening, I’ll at least sway, or sometimes imagine me dancing. Since I was little, I’ve dreamed of waltzing. That dream has died.
When walking, I’ll sometimes increase my pace, or even sway to the right song.
Even when writing there are reactions. If I’ve paused typing, my hands will tap the beat. I’ve even typed to the beat while drafting.

@nprofile…un5k They make a couple of brief appearances in packs, but aren't the focus. They're in the worldbuilding, but became incidental because I'd tired of them.
In Book-3 they're in one chapter. They attack, but the focus is Gliss bonding with those hired to protect her, and her discovering she isn't as helpless as she believed.
Do you write them? Have you considered writing them? In my later Pannulus stories, they appear at all.

There aren’t any I dislike per se. Instead, I’ve grown weary of certain aspects of fantasy, especially epic fantasy.
For instance, elves. I loved LOTR. I’ve read it multiple times. Then, there were a zillion books about elves, so they aren’t a part of my worldbuilding (they’re a dead race).

I miss mapmaking and have been reviewing old ones. The original Tremjara map is from 2002 (created in Paint). Dimensions: 754 x 531 pixels.
The 2020 Tremjara map’s dimensions: 4800 x 3200 pixels.
If you zoom in on the old map it blurs immediately. That land maze in the NW? Scrapped in 2003. The color palette was severely limited.

fantasy creatures
Because I enjoy them, I’ve written creatures that are classically fantastic, invented by me, and animals I’ve resurrected and evolved.
Fantastic? Gargoyles, ghosts, gryphons, imps, sea monsters, unicorns, werewolves, and zombies. Many of those are somewhat novel in my genre.
Of the above, each has a big moment at some point in my writing, but none appear frequently, except for ghosts. I do love my ghosts.

I write in a fantasy world, so the difficult part is making them work with the worldbuilding and plot.
I’d imagine you’ve become an expert on all the ways artifacts can reach the UK. You had Romans, but also Saxons and others. Criminal smugglers? The wealthy, or museums that have “misplaced” their secret finds? History would be key, figuring out how to pass artifacts from distant places from one person to another all the way to the UK.

@nprofile…c5xf A rewrite, once you face doing it, can be great fun. The idea of getting it right, and having a blueprint to aid you, is thrilling. The danger (learned the hard way), is allowing the original to overly influence the rewrite.
I rewrote Book-4 and was pleased with the result. There were two partial versions of Stealing Light, but I got it right on the third try.
There was Ametha, the character needing a story. I wrote 3 disastrous novels for her and gave up. Then, success! 🤣

After, I completed my first NaNo (of 9), started writing short stories, switched to Deep 3rd POV, and overhauled my worldbuilding and maps.
It was an Ontyre Renaissance lasting several years.
In the middle of it, I reimagined that book. Rather reference it, I wrote a new story with it in mind: Trust in the Forgotten. Thus was Kovenlore born.

The fascination with the inhumane that isn’t balanced with the humane. This isn’t just the media. I see it in books, film, and posts. It’s societal decay where shame no longer exists and where the world view is egocentric.

last fantasy book I read
That was the 2nd of 4 books in the “Merlin series” by Mary Stewart since I’m currently reading the 3rd one. I’ve read them before, but it was 25-years ago.
The writing is astonishingly good and I had a longing to experience that again, the stories having faded from memory.
They chronicle the legend of King Arthur, but are told from Merlin’s perspective. Magic is actually downplayed.

How I organize notes is a part of my vetting process for perspective stories. I use “process” loosely. It isn’t as formal as it sounds.
When a story lingers in my head, I write a short piece on it on the computer. Most die there. If they endure, I’ll periodically record handwritten notes (they’re better committed to memory).
If those accumulate, I organize them, create a Scrivener project, and enter those notes.

@nprofile…ve28 I'm reporting back from the future (the morning of the 21st). Yesterday, I went on a hike along Rattlesnake Creek and it was a gorgeous day, reaching 70 degrees, the warmest day here all year (and the last that warm into the foreseeable future.
Oh, the spring fever! I hit the trail and let my feet take me where they would. The birds were a symphony in the trees. I heard challenges from fierce chipmunks on branches. The creek was high, the grass greening. What a day! 😍 🐿️ 🌤️

Riparia? Hahaha…
She exists at opposite ends of the scale, and spends far too little time anywhere in-between. As her mentors like to note, she lacks balance, and that leads to most of her problems.
In Book-1, the same woman who babbles and almost passes out prior to a formal occasion in Barnavava, also chases a demon through the streets of Brassit alone, not to mention the novel’s climax on an airship.

I do from time to time, photograph the unusual because it’s fascinating. That’s also when I wish I had a better camera.
Those images, though, are random.
There are many personal possessions that would appear to have little value, but I treasure them, yet no one knows the significance or history behind any of them. Each has a story, and many are older than me. I guess, at some point, we each become a personal museum.

I don’t actually celebrate, but I am aware of many of them. An actual planned celebration would turn into a lonely affair.
In my writing journal, and especially in my tracking system, I could identify every writing occasion over the past 8-9 years, and some before that.
Off the top of my head, I could easily recall the month and year for every milestone, but not usually the specific date.

I appreciate perspective. When I lived in Wyoming, a day with 25mph winds was nothing. 40mph a breeze. In Missoula, we get high wind warnings at 12mph.

One romance is long-suffering, but one of them seeing the likelihood of their impending end changes everything.
One romance is naïve, toxic, and increasingly tragic.

Thanks for the encouragement. In the beginning, I stopped consuming a lot of foods because they tasted disgusting. I've at least added those back into my diet, but a hint of Covid remains.

This rediscovered hybrid map has me reliving my 2017 Tremjara painting project when I also made changes as I went.
While painting the west, I’d glance at the east, an idea forming that became Pannulus.
It’s missing here.
Well, part of one island is there. Two years before, I’d written short stories for an unknown location. That location became the archipelago of Pannulus.

The major symptoms of Covid ended on Jan 3rd. Some minor ones linger, or reoccur. One of is “the taste of Covid.”
I lost a lot of weight during Covid and was shocked to discover that continues, albeit slowly.
I blame foods tasting “off.”

Here are two spring scenes of lupine in the mountains that were taken last year on separate days, one on Woods Ridge, the other in Pattee Canyon.
In the Kovenlore series, there’s seldom an appreciation for each season given that it represents another period of struggle. In short, they’re too distracted to appreciate it.
One exception is in Book-5 when Kasaria experiences her “first” day beneath the sun.

how much romance?
I’m unsure how to quantify this, but despite a lot of adventure, there’s a considerable amount, and it permeates through everything in the series.
There’s more in the 7 books as the series progresses, too.
Book-4, which releases next, contains several romances, despite the intense and turbulent events that occur. In many ways, “wartime romances” applies, though they’re all different, as are the outcomes.

My mind is always moving fast. Too fast. Part of the reason I listen to music while writing is that it forms an audio cocoon to aid focusing on the story I’m editing.
Long, long ago, when I wrote using Word, it was far more difficult to do what I do. Scrivener is flexible and allowed me to refine my tracking methods. Maybe more important is that accessing the various books became simple.

finishing?
For me, drafting is the all-consuming Olympics, the rest of the time like training where I do a variety of writing related tasks. I may have ideas surface while drafting, but after a few notes, I set them aside.
Right now, I’m nearing the end of the Book-5 edit while working out issues with Book-7 on the side.
Meanwhile, I’m always vetting new story ideas and writing notes concerning other unpublished works.

I stumbled across a map of the Tremjara continent that shouldn’t exist. Yet, does.
When I painted the map in 2017, I went off a clean black & white map, yet here’s my starting place on top of the 2015 version of the map.
I have no memory of doing this, but love it. It captures the moment between one map and another.
More than color differentiates the 2015 and 2018 maps.

feelings upon completion
Given I rotate writing projects, “finished” means completing a stage. The feeling is the same, regardless. There’s immense satisfaction, but also relief given all the time, and my heart, I put into a story.
Simultaneously, there’s great excitement to begin the next project, whether it's editing or drafting.
In a way, this gives me a deeper appreciation for projects. There’s a sense of fulfillment multiple times.

I only DRAFT one book at a time. Fast drafting is intense, and consumes me. Final planning? 3-4 weeks. Drafting? 3-4 weeks.
After that, yes, I'll work on multiple books, and will even break from editing to draft.
I rotate stories to keep my eyes and perspective fresh. I’ve done this since long before publishing. I enjoy returning repeatedly to enhance a story, and always it rewards me for doing so.

Pulling history into a story…
I should mention ghosts since one figures prominently in several books. Ghost have ghost pasts and corporeal pasts. That’s history needing explained.
Somewhat related are cemeteries, graves, mausoleums, etc.. If you can’t find history in these places you’re deader than they are. Besides great for stories, these places demand explanations.

There’s someone who gains this skill, but managing (yes, that’s the right word) Riparia is a difficult task owing to her recklessness when she doesn’t think enough, and despairing when she thinks too much.
It requires first breaking through her defenses, then slowly rebuilding her self-esteem while soothing her propensity for self-criticism. Riparia tends to believe she must do everything herself, yet is blind to her strengths.

My em dash is shift + option + dash: —
No, I don’t customize, nor do I give it a thought. I lack the technical skills to do so, and lack such a person in my life.
The closest I come is using an old mac keyboard so I have the numerical keypad to the right. I also use my mouse left-handed (I’m right-handed).
Otherwise, I apply my innovativeness to adapting Scrivener to my needs, along with drafting and editing.

“stress testing” work
I like how adding quotes is supposed to convey the precise meaning. H’m. To “stress test” my work I subject it to “adversity.” After, to measure its “durability,” I subject it to an “assessment.”
Good gosh.
Is the question about beta readers? Editors? ARC copies? An extinction event?
I have none of the above, so I adapted. My stories sit for months between editing passes, my last major pass a targeted edit.

Books. Not people sitting down for light reading, but great tomes, or treasured books. Found books, often those thought lost. Until read, a book is a mystery.
Likewise, libraries, which don’t have to look like your public library. I’ve written everything from a shed to a subterranean maze that comes alive. History, and more, awaits.

Editing skews my perspective, and it’s difficult to rate my own work. A 7, perhaps? I wouldn’t want it too high.
The Kovenlore series is adventure, romance, and suspense. I’ll publish Book-4 this spring.
Book-4…from the beginning, there’s the sense that events are askew. The reader is privy to disturbing plans, lives are in turmoil, and an ominous cloud hangs over events from the start (literally, in some cases).

Of course it does. I wouldn’t write contrary to my beliefs. That doesn’t mean that my MCs hold to exactly my beliefs, or that I don't work hard to provide antagonists excellent arguments.
Yes, my MCs are burdened with wounds and flaws, but at the end of the day, they’re trying to make the world a better place. They’re righteous, in the best senses of the word, even if they struggle with the weight of that word.

I love it when the ancient world intrudes. Ruins can be benign, or not (like Meldenphire), but they always have a past that becomes the present in the story.
Artifacts often appear in my Pannulus Mysteries. People think they know their backstory, but not necessarily. Origin tales can be deceiving when evil creators are involved.
