So you want to live in a world where the government takes care of your kids instead of you, while using invasive regulation that doesn't need to exist. Got it.
Do you know why nobody questions alcohol/tobacco regulation and kids? Because showing your ID to a shopkeeper doesn't tie your indentity to everything you do online. The shopkeeper won't even remember your identity in a few hours.

Nothing stops a government from mandating it. After it is implemented, a government at any time can decide to ban hosting/usage of fedi instances (social media in general) without some automated scanning. After there is one or more approved services supporting it, they can fully mandate it and point to the Mastodon implementation as a requirement and reference implementation.

Indexing blocklists of instances in one place considered harmful. Having a searchable database where you can look at deliberately wrong moderation decisions is bad for these people, because it holds them more accountable. You would have to look through the instances all manually to hold them accountable without it. Picrel.

In the before times (5+ years ago), very few cared who was joining the network. (Notice the "network", this place isn't Mastodon and never was.) When someone joined, it was seen as a good thing no matter who that was, because it made the network larger, the decentralization was spreading. But in the last 5 years, the goals seemingly shifted. Suddenly more people on here turned to a bad thing, a decentralized network meant to allow anyone to have a voice turned into a fractured space of gatekept echo-chambers with very little bridges between them. Some might say that is the result of not gatekeeping the today's gatekeepers, but I don't really care and still mostly have the old mindset in my mind. It is more of a reflection on how humanity changed.

Nobody has "power" here, nobody can give up their "power". You have no power over me and neither do I over you. This is the nature of the network and it's been built for this purpose. You cannot exclude people from the network no matter what you try, trying so is task with no end.

The bubble timeline is kinda pointless in my opinion when not paired with a relay subscription to that instance (disabled in Akkoma by default). Like you get a timeline of posts from certain instances, but only the posts that got federated to you. What's even the point then if you want a timeline for an instance and don't even get all the posts from that instance.

The end result is multiple protocols, spread over multiple compositor implementations, that aren't all compatible with each other.
Compared to XIM, which took probably a year or two to make and with all of it's also known issues. But at least it's one standard, one protocol, you can use and it will mostly work.

At least the XMODIFIERS env seems to be gone and a program can ask the compositor to be the IM instead of X11 going down the path of looking at an env variable and doing nothing when the IM in the env isn't actually available.

We agree on this. My point wasn't that bringing more people will be bad, it was that if you bring more people in the current state, it will be bad.

Red Hat is already almost the only reason why Linux desktop is currently even working, but also almost the only reason why it sucks. When you look at almost any major project, they are maintaining it or involved in it. GCC is maintained mostly by Red Hat, glibc's maintainer is from Red Hat, Red Hat is also involved in iconv and coreutils. And that's just GNU projects. You then look at FreeDesktop projects and it's even more Red Hat. Mesa is quite a lot of Red Hat along with GPU companies, NetworkManager is almost exclusively Red Hat, GNOME is heavily sponsored by Red Hat. Point is, IBM can decide to kill Linux at any moment, if they wish to via Red Hat as a proxy. They are already the only absolute foundation of the whole "ecosystem".
But they are also by proxy the reason why Linux sucks. Wayland always was heavily pushed by Red Hat along with it's stupid sandboxing, portals and all that other crap that never works properly. Flatpak is heavily pushed by GNOME, ie. Red Hat.

And those people are at the whims of Wayland devs. Any time some lunatic can decide to delete X11 support from mesa and it's not like anyone from the small community will be able to maintain that. And I don't mean the last point lightly. The Linux community is one of the most annoying, smug and condescending communities you can find at all. The moment someone that is clueless about an issue asks for help online, it is over. GNU/Tards are especially bad, considering they've made it their life goal to be as annoying as possible to every possible and existing Linux user. They are the biggest blight in this community, which is why I think they need to go away as quickly as possible. One of the very long list of reasons why I react to their posts the way I do.
Also on the point of user-friendliness and why things worked better 10-15 years ago. 10 years ago, a user had an operating system, one package manager, one theme, one way to install applications. Today a user has to think about Flatpaks, Snaps, AppImages, their OS package manager; whether they use PulseAudio or Pipewire (both break in different ways at random); whether they are using Wayland or not (Wayland is still broken in unique ways); whether they are running apps sandboxed without knowing, eg. Flatpaks/Snaps (apps randomly break, files the user wants to interact with aren't always visible due to sandboxing, apps don't usually respect system theme at all,...); what even is a portal and why doesn't it work,...

So, Alex "Glussy" Gleasonator maintains a fedi frontend called Soapbox that was used a lot on here and is the basis for pl-fe (not to be confused with Pleroma-FE)/Nicolium now maintained by mkljczk. That frontend along with Glussy's own Pleroma fork, Rebased, supported quote posts before Pleroma had them and there was a certain CSS compatibility class for them that was later deprecated. @p@fsebugoutzone.org wrapped all posts coming from FSE in that compatibility class, which had the effect of all posts coming from FSE to appear as completely empty to all Soapbox users. Now Glussy fucked off to Nostr and this network is unironically better without him and his constant shilling for Nostr.

It's the same reason why containers are used as a solution to a problem created by bad practices. I miss the times where Python projects/libraries were like, yeah if you have something between 3.6 and 3.9, you are good.
If your software needs Docker to be easily installable, you've done something horribly wrong. If your Python projects needs a venv with versions pinned to the patch level, you've done something horribly wrong.
