Idk about other countries, but at least in Poland, ISPs typically forbid customers from "letting other people outside of customer premises use the service" in their ToS.
These proxies wouldn't exist if ISPs enforced their own ToS.

AFAIK slightly thicker.
I watched GamersNexus disassemble and reassemble GPUs and he often measures the thickness and says that "it's X mm so it was probably Y mm before it got squished" but I never tried to remember by how much Y is greater than X

Also, a problem with a web of trust based on meeting someone IRL is that it reveals the social graph. Even if your legal name isn't attached to it, once your enemy (govt, corpo, etc) successfully deanonymizes a few people, that narrows down who everyone else could be.
I guess it'd at least be more censorship-resistant than a google- or govt-run verification method, but still far from ideal...

I mostly care about finding information about obscure topics.
Whether it's Half-Life 2 modding or optimizing gate count of adder circuits, there's only a handful of people interested in it at any given time, and usually none of my usual friends know where to find those.

I wouldn't call it an externality, since it only affects those who use Linux.
It's not like you had a perfectly peaceful software ecosystem and suddenly someone started making Linux, which makes you suffer even if you don't use Linux.

The only cases when I type IPv4 addresses from memory is when I don't have working DNS - either when debugging DNS, or when manually configuring the first interface of a host, on a network with no DHCP.
Unfortunately, these are the cases where I can't rely on DNS to remember IPv6 for me.
It's not a deal-breaker but it does add some friction.

I meant in France.
My point is that a large part of oil prices' impact on inflation is through transport costs that affect the prices of almost everything. And thus, an "energy crisis" may still be happening through vectors other than electricity prices.
IOW, @npub1fzh…p7r7's posts would imply "France is not affected by the Strait of Hormuz being blocked", which I don't think is the case.

do you review the code like it was written by a malicious actor?
Last month I was reviewing a friend's code 4 times, and every time I was found bugs that I had missed the previous time. And that was code written by a human who knew what he was doing.
I imagine AI generated code would have even subtler bugs that are easier to miss.

However

But aren't those same skills needed in engineering disciplines?

On a couple occasions I've witnessed that if you take a small program written in ordinary C, and you spend some effort to make it fast, you can get 10x-100x speedup.
Let's say only the 10x speedup end of the range generalizes to most software.
Imagine if, instead of writing new software, more effort was spent on optimizing existing software.

Also, where do you get the material from?
Sand would have to be mined on the surface, and good sand can be quite useful for glass & concrete... though I guess dwarves might not have that so easier for them.
Ideally it'd be some inert waste but idk if eg. slag would be any good.

Sometimes parts of the mine that are still in use cave in due to an accident, and that can still cause issues on the surface.
But yeah, unused areas can probably be filled - if you search for "deep mine backfilling" you'll find some companies selling devices to make that more efficient.
Though it still probably is quite costly, and even more costly with dwarven technology.

Anyway, it looks like there will be less need for average programmers writing boring CRUD apps. I hoped it'd result from programming becoming more accessible to people, similar to writing.
If instead it happens through a centralized service, that's kinda sad.
But maybe it means those of us who keep their jobs can focus on the difficult/interesting problems?

1. Is it really better than a spreadsheet and a bunch of local scripts? How do you know if you haven't seen the code?
2. Are you still maintaining skills needed to make spreadsheets and write shell one-liners, in case the LLM service ceases to exist, jacks up the prices, or deliberately degrades in quality?
3. If this software is disposable, how do you dispose of it in a way that nobody in the future will accidentally use it?

idk about Sailfish OS, but used Android (LineageOS) without GMS for a few years, and:
- most things from F-Droid worked fine
- proprietary IMs like DIscord or Telegram worked, but without notifications
- haven't tried any bank apps, loyalty card apps, shopping apps, etc.

I also think people are focusing on that particular unwrap() too much, and not enough on a bigger picture: lack of fallbacks
Without fallbacks at the interfaces between different subsystems, there's nothing to stop an error in one place from cascading throughout the whole infra

It's not that situations are novel, it's that very similar situations can lead to vastly different outcomes.
Can you predict the consequences of telling someone on the internet to fuck off?
Most likely they'll just stop interacting with you. But maybe because of that, they'll drive while angry, and cause an accident.
Or maybe they will reflect on their behaviour and become a kinder person, and later save someone's life as a result.
Can you predict that?

Even if that means judging behaviours instead of people, it still leads to conclusions of the form "You did a thing that led to a bad outcome. Don't do that next time."
But you're never in the same situation again, and next time you encounter a similar situation, the consequences of each choice can be different, and you likely won't have enough information to be sure which choice leads to a bad outcome.

IME, most people most of the time don't know what they're doing.
Even in their main profession, they don't understand the reasons for how they do things, the tradeoffs they're making, and the full consequences of their decisions.
Which is why consequentialism cannot work.
It makes no sense to pass a moral judgement on a human based solely on the consequences of their actions.
And you cannot expect humans to make moral decisions based on consequences they cannot predict

Brodie has been reading the mailing lists and seems to have come to a similar conclusion.
I've read a few threads, and it seems to Kent, making things easy for bcachefs users is a holy end that justifies all means.
It kinda looks like:
- I need this to help my user recover from filesystem corruption
- we have a system, it says you have to wait for the next release
- but your system is stupid, in this case it doesn't have any benefit

I don't have anything specific to recommend, but I think this distinction might be important:
do you want to make websites, or web applications?
If websites, I'd say learn HTML and CSS first, without JS (wish I knew a good tutorial for that)
If web applications, I guess you'll need someone to recommend you a framework and read the tutorial for that framework :/

the whole point is that the re-creatong user is the one with knowledge and authority go tell which data is good. The goal is that the second person will only receive data that the verifier person understood, so any hidden bits that the attacker can manipulate without the verifier's knowledge don't get transmitted

I think you're taking this too practically.
My proposed solution wasn't meant to be a serious proposal, but an example of applying the general principle of TOCTOU-resistant systems to the system of two humans who deal with invoices.
Banning zip files only protects from ambiguous zip files. One day someone may come up with a way to make an ambiguous PDF thay displays differently in pdf.js than in Adobe Reader, and then what?
