@npub1vwy…zugd A few thoughts about your idea of a quantum ready fork:
The mining factor seems to be the biggest reason this is unlikely to work even if we wanted it to. The difficulty adjustment would, at the time of the split, be set based on our >1 ZH/s, and it's unlikely that we'd have anything close to that much available. I suppose it might be feasible to look at merge mining, but merge mining here would have all of the same centralization concerns it has elsewhere that it is used.
Even if we handle this, manually setting the difficulty lower (assuming this can be done, I'm decidedly not a coder), there's the matter of what block you fork from. Because of course anyone who transacts after the split can then go use their coins on the other fork, and while we wait for a quantum attack, the chains have time to diverge heavily.
You could consider splitting AFTER a quantum attack, with a roll back, a la Ethereum Classic (gross...), but even this assumes you recognize an attack as a quantum attack and not just someone losing their keys. There is no reason to assume that they would be foolish enough to make it this obvious, as it'd be much more sensible to appear to just be someone losing their keys.
The latest episode of @npub1pxy…7nke actually had some very good thoughts on how to address quantum. I don't think it's quite as close (or likely to ever happen) as Danny's guest, but I do think his proposed actions as if it were are a sane approach. Rolling out these proposed fixes on Testnet, Signet, etc, and then encouraging people who aren't devs to actually USE these systems to really give it some testing makes a lot of sense. Hard to incentivize this given that testnet tokens are decidedly worthless, but perhaps wallets that put it a little more front and center as a way to help new people to Bitcoin learn their way around without putting real money at risk wouldn't be the worst thing anyway.
I get your rationale for considering a fork, but yea, logistically I don't think it could quite work out as well as you'd like. It might shut up the retards because they'd be too retarded to see why it shouldn't, but in terms of actually fixing anything I think it'd miss the mark. And meanwhile, building things for retards is a really good way to waste a lot of time and energy.

I didn't say don't buy MSTR. I asked if he addressed the reasons for not doing so. As with most portfolio matters, it boils down to sizing. But the risks to common stock in a levered company involve layers upon layers of counterparty risk, including the very real risk of government seizure. And the Sharpe ratio disparity is night and day.
They're two wildly different roles in a portfolio. One is bedrock. The other is a high risk speculative position. You'd think someone who sells more MSTR than anyone would be able to articulate this. Especially on an interview about why buying Bitcoin makes so much sense.

I'm hearing that people are having Claude talk like a caveman to reduce token spend. Seems to make sense -- make the output less verbose, more efficient. It's not a human after all.
We could also take this further, and perhaps have it use some sort of standardized shorthand that the computer uses. Maybe build in some additional looping so that when it's doing the same thing but slightly differently, it doesn't write out the whole thing each time. I'd call this something descriptive. Like, say "function."
I bet you could also save even more tokens by using the same type of shorthand for input, instead of natural language. Using this standardized shorthand (we could call it something like "code") to pass instructions to Claude. It may save more than tokens too -- I assume that less bandwidth would be used for uploading the instructions, and likely, less memory and cpu cycles too thanks to the smaller size. We might even be able to shave resources even further, using this standardization, by creating a new model -- one that doesn't use the inefficiencies of natural language, but instead, only parses this "code." This new model, being much smaller, wouldn't be appropriately called an LLM, due to not being large. It'd deserve a name more fitting. Something like "interpreter."
I bet if it were made small enough we could even run it locally on user machines -- even cell phones -- instead of in a datacenter somewhere. Allowing anyone to use it basically for free on their own hardware, privately. To run even faster for "code" we want to use often, we could further slim it down by having an "interpreter" convert it, or "compile" it, into an even shorter version, that only the computer itself will understand, but will completely dispense with the extra punctuation, so it runs even faster.
Man that'd be a really cool advancement in computing.

For a general purpose desktop, I don't have any reason to look past Slackware. For server systems that are a little more slimmed down, it does depend on the use case, but I do tend to like the BSD's. Got a soft spot for OpenBSD as I used to run it on a Pentium 1, which I used to pivot around the firewall in high school. It is very stable though -- if you want more up to date FreeBSD can be a bit more reasonable.
I'm hearing interesting things about NixOS, especially by people playing with AI, but it's a bit of a different paradigm.
Gentoo is another Linux that can do pretty well being slimmed down as well -- but depending what software you need, distributing everything as source code that needs to be compiled could result in some time consuming compilation depending on the hardware you're using. Though you can always compile on another machine and move over binaries.
And truth be told while I don't personally usually look to Slackware for the minimal approach, you really could just install the A, AP, and N software sets and have a pretty viable server. There'd be a bit of manual dependency resolution though that you could end up engaged in if you find yourself needing to pull from the other sets.

Optiplex looks like something I'd be in the range of, looking at ebay used office equipment. Though my real plan is to wait until colleges get out and see if I can score some discarded machines from the students.
Though more likely to be a laptop in that case, which is less than ideal.
The UPS seems like a bigger priority either way though to avoid drive corruption. Especially with an HDD -- second IBD just took a month lol.

Haha much appreciated, but I'm more likely to get more computers than beef up the main one. Besides, with Slackware it does still do most things I want snappy enough.
Could definitely use an an all in one for a node though, or at least a UPS so my Raspi 4 doesn't corrupt the hard drive from occasional power flickers.
Right now just reeling from buying a fence, having trees fall on said fence, paying to take down 11 more trees, a steep surprise vet bill, and generally being the parent of a hockey player. Bear market vibes haha.

For the first time in a decade I had to give my system some swap space to operate, because electrs kept getting killed by the kernel after running out of memory (while I admittedly had multiple browser windows open with streaming media).

And yea, authority, in any valid sense, is born of knowledge. A doctor is an authority on medicine. A rancher is an authority on cattle. A teacher is an authority,one might hope, on their subject.
You listen to them because it's how you learn, or take necessary direction based on knowledge. But they're never beyond reproach or question, save when time is of the essence (as in a rescue or battle situation, where those questions and second guesses hopefully happened before or get saved for when the delay doesn't get people killed).

I used to do this more, but there are very few Linux distros I'm interested in in the systemd era. Been hanging out on Slackware for the better part of the last decade.
Runit and OpenRC seem like some viable alternatives though. Slackware's sysvinit always used rc style scripts so it's always been pretty orderly, unlike the other sysvinit distros, who handled it by replacing their tangled mess of scripts with a system completely at odds with the Unix philosophy.

Just started it, but just noting that my initial gut reaction to the idea that Israel dragged us into this is to think back to when Kissinger influenced Anwar Saddat. While Kent is right, we could have stopped them from going in by taking something away, I do wonder to what extent emboldening them to go in, in order to leave them exposed to be weakened in the process, wouldn't also be a viable move.
Egypt sure hasn't been a threat since Saddat, acting effectively as an agent of Kissinger, allowed their forces to be defeated, and their economy gutted. Kissinger didn't stop the attack from happening; he rendered it into one of the biggest own goals in military history.
I think politically speaking, if an American leadership team is to put Israel in their place, it's much wiser to do so surreptitiously, rather than taking them head on. It'd be political suicide to visibly stand against them, but if we go to war with them in such a way that it drags them into far more damage than we take, while simultaneously giving some other frenemies a black eye, it could be strategically viable.

I think the psyop if anything is really in getting us focused on hating Jews -- as if Jews were the ones who created Israel, rather than the British, who tried for decades to prod them into locating there before ultimately supporting the rise of Nazism which was the final motivator. Israel is little more than a golem. Conjured up to salt the earth in order to prevent the resurgence of a dominant entity after the fall of the Ottoman empire, because maritime empires can't abide land based empires standing in the way of their freedom of movement. But where I'm coming around to Tom Luongo's angle is in recognizing that they wouldn't be terribly happy to see the Greater Israel plan come to fruition either, as nothing says that Israel plays well with the UK forever. If you'd done to the Jews over centuries what the European powers had, would YOU trust them to always hold you in high regard?
Israel, as it exists, does need to be unwound. The vast majority of its people have been terrorized by a combination of their own leadership and the retaliation from the peoples their nation has abused to a point of being entirely irrational attack dogs, and there's a rehabilitation process that will likely be complicated and messy. But its tied to their programming, not their religion. Jews existed in Palestine for centuries, often even holding positions of power, in relative harmony. The Preoccupation Podcast ( https://fountain.fm/show/prl4eCKyyIgs6hXqjChR ) gets into a lot of this history in ways that most even from and in Palestine and the surrounding areas aren't aware of (and indeed, it was done by a Palestinian Canadian who got curious about the history of his own people).
So yea, don't hate Israel. Instead, seek to resolve the incentives and motivations that cause them to do what they do, and be what they are. Hate rarely is a useful activity, except for those who've caused you to engage in it, in order to control you.

Guess I'll check that interview out. I've always taken Tucker with a grain of salt especially with his CIA proximity, but Tom's not exactly gospel either.
What I will say, though, is that by removing every reason Iran had to avoid striking Israel with much in order to maintain a deterrent, we have basically let them off their short leash, and they've been raining fire down on Tel Aviv pretty consistently for a good few days. And the Strait of Hormuz does disproportionately affect European nations compared to North America.
The real fun will be seeing if Warsh and Bessent come together to spin up the money printers, but target them specifically at fuel subsidies (as well, perhaps at things like Urea and the other vital chemicals we're seeing shortages of alongside oil) as a way to both address the liquidity pinch while avoiding hitting CPI. This seemed the obvious solution after listening to Luke Gromen the other day talking about the bind they were in between those two factors (and the employment numbers that coincide with the liquidity issues) and it just seems like an obvious way to thread the needle, once you get two leaders of the same mind in those two positions. It also very much plays into Trump's old maxim of "Drill baby drill," which is a lot easier to incentivize when it's actually really fucking necessary (but also, really fucking profitable).
Who'd have thought the wars for oil would have been about CONSTRICTING supply in order to rebuild industrial capacity with the potential profits derived from it? Never a dull moment...

Definitely resolved my least favorite thing about Primal.
Though I'd still like the ability to generate an invoice to pay with an outside app. Not default is fine -- I get wanting the smooth flow, but not being able to zap from an outside app at all is probably my biggest reason for rarely opening it.
Zeus incorporating NWC may have made that mostly a non issue but it always struck me as a weird decision.

We will likely iterate easier a bit, though in fairness the ease is already getting pretty easy compared to where it was even a year ago to handle your own channels with thing's like Zeus or Blixt having integrated nodes right on a phone. Tools for making selecting channels to open would help, and I think Zeus would benefit from replacing its use of Cashu with Spark for the LN address functionality (I for one have had stuck zaps...). But if you want always on zappability AND full sovereignty you need an always on node.
I'm happy to zap whoever proves me wrong there of course.

And yea, if you thought maybe we're looking for alternatives as Luke is clearly on the 110 bandwagon, you're not wrong. Turns out creating a new node implementation isn't trivial though. Besides, for now, v29 does what it's supposed to.
I care less about op_return than BRC20's, ordinals, inscriptions, runes, and stamps anyway. Op_return is relatively harmless noise. No reason to make it huge but it was always a harm reduction measure.
A better approach to disincentivizing spam would be removal of the segwit discount. But we're too wrapped up in retarded alternatives for that to be worth talking about.

Whether it stops it or not depends on prevalence.
BIP-110 is a reckless soft fork proposal.
They are quite separate, despite having some crossover. Many people running knots and advocates thereof staunchly reject BIP-110.

Jealous. If you decide the nicotine is good and the smoking isn't the fun part, getting Scandinavian style snus is a pretty low impact way to do it on health. Steaming the tobacco helps a lot.
But nothing beats blowing smoke rings and telling the world to fuck itself.

Both @nprofile…szx8 and James Check bring it up pretty frequently, and if you think about what it's showing fundamentally, it follows that the way crowds behave work as they do. Selling pressure begets selling pressure, to a point, as most people aren't interested in selling at a loss, but may well decide to take profits (to "buy back cheaper" later). The fuel behind that typically runs out as we get below that 0 mark, as most any sale becomes necessarily at a loss, and most of us in the space, even the degenerate traders, know that over time bitcoin goes up. So the selling pressure lets up, a bottom forms, and a new bull market can emerge.
We're not there yet. We don't NEED to get there -- but we always have, and if I were a betting man, I'd say that this time probably isn't different.

It sounds more complicated than it is. Basically, MVRV is the ratio of Market value to Realized value. Realized value being the sum of the price when each Bitcoin was moved last, and market value being the full market cap of outstanding Bitcoin. The mean of this ratio is about 1.6, just historically speaking. Adding a Z-score into it just looks at where we are in terms of standard deviations from this mean. A Z-score of 1 means we are 1 standard deviation away from this mean, while 0 indicates that we are at that mean presently. And negative Z-scores of course mean we're below the mean.

High school sports in general have gotten wild. Even Cross Country at my kid's school had a coach cracking down in ways that had me shocked. I get it for like, actual team sports, especially for competitive teams, but cross country was always the biggest sport by participation growing up, in part because you determine your own level of competition. I ran with particularly competitive folks who got scholarships, but by the same token, I also ran with stoners who'd pull 30 minute 5k's just to be active and have an extracurricular to show. Because they required next to zero resources from coaches or captains to have along for the run anyway.
Competition's all well and good, but there's such a thing as going too extreme with what is at the end of the day a leisurely pastime. I suppose some people think sports are something more than that though.
Anything to distract from the realities of the world I suppose.

People expect instant engagement.
That's not how things work in the world, nor on Nostr. Where they've had it before, it was an algorithm doing the heavy lifting so they didn't have to actually meet people.
The ones who make it are the ones that are okay with posting into a void, and who will take the time to seek out posts and comment on them. And, not for nothing, hashtags are pretty handy when you're new (some of us even follow a few). And maybe even sign in as someone else and see the content they're seeing to see what they'd like to uncover. Personally I think the ability to do this AND, without signing out as the other person, just follow from your primary keypair would be a novel feature that would be quite useful. To illustrate, I'd sign in as @nprofile…jejf and if I see someone on his feed I'd like to follow, I'd be given a button labeled "Follow as" where I could select "nprofile1qqs0uv4h9nmuxj5w5xj972uc6wyjtrvm8ul5krrsgcq7yd5fzn8uk8s53fk7d".
There's also the opt-in algorithms/dvm's that are out there, and Primal and Nostria in particular are pretty good at making these available. Better, actually, is friend-of-friend style feeds. Coracle was a client I used starting out and the ability to build custom feeds using friend of friend, hashtags, and some other means was particularly helpful in building up my follow base.
At the end of the day it's very choose your own adventure. Perhaps some of these tools would be best thrown into a "Discover" tool on whatever clients people are developing. That said, I'm not in the biggest rush to get people who can't be bothered to be a little creative. Might be a bit selfish, and I probably shouldn't condemn people to the ZuckerBorg Cube or being X'ed out, but I'm pretty fond of Nostr's coziness...
