short term we should just use less of it, long term carbon itself provides materials far superior to concrete and steel.
If we'd invest all the budgets going into war right now into research instead, it wouldn't take more than a few decades before we can produce something like graphene at scale.
Not super realistic under capitalism and fascism, but certainly possible from a more scientific perspective.

lots of interesting observations thanks. To hopefully unconfuse: the only important metric is the absolute number for fossils. If that doesn't come down we're fucked.
It's going up, globally, at record rates, also for China.
My guess is that the main reason for this detail is that we're outsourcing production to China, instead of consuming less, and another wild guess is the main culprits still are cement and steel.

yeah exactly, I'm not here to argue about the ethics, but it is clear that if we cut animal protein consumption in half, we can almost double the nutrition value of the same area of land.
and luckily farming systems that are nicer to animals are also more productive, so there's plenty of room for more ethical behavior there.

I hope that you don't mind me adding to the thread. I wrote about this recently and I think your .5 acre assumption is more constraining than reality.
There are three reasons to be more optimistic I think:
1. there's more agricultural land than arable land, which we can use much more effciently (˜x5),
2. there's a lot of surfaces we can use (>x2)
3. a hectare is two acres (x2)

I'm not principally against nuclear either. But I do think we need clear, sane and strict policies around it. And I've not been convinced of a single example where building *new* nuclear made sense recently.
Not shutting down existing nuclear often makes a ton of sense though.
I'd really like to see even more pushback against building new, so that's what I'm pushing here 🙂

I think it's a safe bet to say that with current tech, building nuclear makes little sense, and by the time science has the blockers out we will have sodium storage and solar will be cheaper than nuclear by an order of magnitude at least.

I would my ideas to be either:
- reinforced by logic and compassion and then acted upon, OR
- dismantled by logic and shame and then forgotten.
Since LLM's offer none of those essential tools, they're not useful in decision making.
To your example: a good friend may tell me to not do the public speaking because it gives me stress I don't need and I'm allowed to opt out. ChatGPT would never produce such insight, so at best it's a risky waste of time.

birds can transport a lot of nutrients. I noticed a lot of Prunus Padus and Cornus sanguina in the nearby park that the pigeon eat. Now the built a nest in my pergola, so I'm expecting miracles 😂
Very unscientific, but one may dream, right?
If you don't get it from elsewhere, then from lower layers with deep rooting mulch plants, which was already mentioned I saw.

I see a lot of religious people saying that the torah or the bible forbid genocide and teach followers to love their neighbors. I sometimes echo the sentiment even, because that's more effective than arguing directly at the scripture.
But reading passages like that I recognize them as human written fascist propaganda. It was an evil person that wrote those words.
I find it almost impossible to balance tolerance for religion with intolerance for fascism.

The fact that co2 levels are far from toxic is a favorite talking point of climate deniers.
The problem is physical, not chemical.
The (unrealistic) levels at which co2 becomes toxic would disrupt our climate in unimaginable ways.

my parents were in a vaccine skeptic group, I guess. I got measles and it was wild. I remember hallucinating for days at a time, never had a fever that high.
Luckily they were not idiots enough to deny me the polio vaccine. A class mate of mine was not so lucky. She was half paralized and lost a large portion of her cognitive function.

If you still get shit because someone is too thick to filter your account and/or that hash, they're easily blocked, which solves the problem just fine from my perspective.
FWIW, some of the most wholesome interactions on the Fediverse stem from #alt4me / #alt4you interaction. If someone's actively avoiding that or even pissing on it, it really is only their sad loss.

Often when I climb a tree, I wish I had a better camera with me.
The details on especially the higher branches are often just out of this world.
It may be silly, but up there, where the acoustics change, the smells change, and the mind changes with all that, I feel a desire to capture the moment and take it back down with me.

affordable doesn't have to be crap. I'm living in a house that was built on a shoestring budget just after ww2. Used to be a super cheap coop rental. Fine, simple, small house. Not affordable on modal salary now, not because of cost, but because of artificial scarcity.
We don't need fancy lofts, but simple ~60sqm homes that can house a couple at reasonable cost. If there's enough of those they would be affordable without trouble.

I'm neither a power user nor a UX expert, but usually I am better than average at doing stuff with UIs. The fact that I failed to intuitively do it well, and failed to figure out it was a thing after more than a year, is an illustration of an opportunity (and my imperfections too of course).
It may be solved through marketing via #fediTips , or through automatic language detection, or something else I didn't think of. The button color seems perfectly fine to me..

I don't think it's fair to put that all on the user. So improving ux to set the language is also part of "fix your shit", imho.

that resonates. I had multiple people here tell me to kill myself for having a slightly different opinion.
Eventually I found out it is best to stay silent, or block, instead of grappling with issues publicly.
I guess a significant portion of humans are just jerks, and even if you can learn something from them to improve yourself, it's not worth the psychological damage.
After introducing some very serious filtering habits, I feel exposed to mostly awesome people I even share with.
