I think the bearing in the fan in my Thinkpad T480 died after years of occasional misbehavior. gonna be another step toward a Ship of Theseus situation, fortunately replacements are like 20 bucks on ebay. I don't *have* 20 bucks right now but at least it's not a stretch.
also, after my last disassembly, the front of the top panel doesn't want to snap into the body of the laptop fully... gotta take it apart and see if any clips broke, but @npub1mt7…07dq I'm curious if you have any tips on that...

okay, brief update on setting up the Intel 10500T server:
the 3D-printed 2.5" drive caddy is indeed too tall for some unknown reason, but with the SSD's top cover removed, the entire assembly juuust barely fits under the lid of the PC's chassis.
also, not only does the UEFI see the drive in the eSATA enclosure (connected via a SATA adapter in the m.2 2230 wifi card slot), it offers to boot from it. nice.
a quick memtest passed, so next I'll wipe these drives and install Proxmox.
at some point I will likely figure out what the issue is with the caddy, because I'd like to be able to share my design on one or another 3D model sharing site for anybody looking to do this with a gen6 thru gen9 Intel HP EliteDesk Micro...

my housemate 3d printed my first-ever edit of an object file for such a purpose, a 2.5" drive caddy.
I think it got vertically exaggerated by a few millimeters though, there may not be enough clearance for the drive under the chassis cover, even when I remove the drive housing which I will do since the drive is an SSD and is like 1/3 the size of its housing - this will leave the space above the cutout section free for that SATA connector/cable to exist in.

no, crash meaning the VM/LXC locks up or hangs and I have to reboot it. I haven't suffered any noticeable data loss from an unexplained crash like this yet.
I probably have more than 10x the number of explainable crashes (memory starvation, kernel bugs, ill-behaved software) than I do ones which are mysterious and never repeated which could conceivably be due to a bit flip. my suspicion is that the mysterious ones are mostly not bit-flips either, but I don't have the time or energy to investigate further so I just reboot and move on, keeping an eye on the system for a while.
I've also never had an unexplainable hypervisor crash in ... wow, over 5 years now of 24/7 operation with multiple machines all on office-grade commodity hardware without ECC.

I'm not using ECC and at the moment - rough estimate - I'd say I have about 1 crash a year across ~30 VMs and containers that seems mysterious and non-repeatable enough to possibly have something to do with cosmic rays.

@npub1mtr…trt0 at this point is being used to push out an app with sensitive permissions that's been taken over by an unknown individual who refuses to engage with its large community of users and developers.
I STRONGLY recommend disabling updates from Fdroid, if not uninstalling and manually installing 2.0.11.2, or installing the Google Play version which has a different maintainer.
this is extremely shady and it's just looking worse as time goes on. I'll link to the Syncthing forum thread from about where I left off last time in a subsequent post.

thinking ahead to my next phone running @npub1kwa…e0nj - anybody got opinions on Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7 (those exact models)?
I'm looking for a phone that will last for years, where I can replace the battery without too high a risk of breaking the device. I'm currently satisfied with the horsepower of a Poco F1 with Snapdragon 845 and 6GB RAM.
I'm really leery of the lack of microSD, but I want to try #GrapheneOS as a daily driver, so. #surfhosting
