i'm impressed that the messy marriage between anarchists and corpos lasted as long as it did in open source software. but it seems that AI programming is the last straw before divorce.

PSA: because the trump admin has made it illegal to ship "e-waste" across the border (for some inscrutable reasons) you may want to avoid shipping any retro tech items across the US border right now. Exports most likely to get fucked but imports may also get fucked too.

thought: in a sci-fi scenario with intelligent aliens, there would probably be some issues with color displays, since they take advantage of the specific way ours eyes work. colors could appear distorted (if the response doesn't line up), missing entirely (for those who can see UV and IR), or unmixed (in the case of organisms that take advantage of chromatic aberration)
therefore, monochrome displays simply make the most sense in SPACE!

quick clarification in case anyone is confused:
referring to an individual you don't know by "they/them" pronouns, because you don't know which ones to use: good, do this
referring to a trans woman by "they/them" pronouns specifically only after finding out she was trans, when you were using "she/her" pronouns before that (or vice versa for trans men, going from "he/him"): that is a microagression

i think that if your social space is going to attempt and have a "no politics" rule that rule must be enforced by a council which contains at least one gay person, one trans person, one black person, one woman, one member of each major religion (and one nonreligious person of course), etc
because otherwise that rule is just going to turn into "no complaining about bigotry"

@nprofile…fe8t i don't think "AI" has much to do with it. the reason they exist is because nobody from ad companies to e-commerce hosting to payment processors is incentivized to stop it, as they all take a cut of the money.
the only parts "AI" could partially automate is writing the listings, which is a part they only have to do once at the start and usually just used stolen images and videos for anyways.
you're mostly correct here about the bullshit nature of all of this, i just don't like seeing fearmongering that suggests of some sort of fully autonomous evil computer stealing our money (not that you're directly saying that, but someone who doesn't know what "AI" means could easily misinterpret as such...) when the reality is that the guy who used to type "cute puppy videos" into Google search is now just typing the same into ChatGPT.

"microtransit" solutions are always fascinating because they're clearly made by people who don't ride public transit and don't care about public transit
people who ride transit want reliable stuff that shows up at the same times every day and follows a consistent route you can plan around
people who don't ride transit think everyone wants their own personal taxi

@nprofile…fxgn you are wrong in saying that, yes. because sports are a lot more complicated than single metrics, and elite athletes are - shockingly - not average people.
the purpose of gender segregation in sports is not to protect women, it is to protect men from having to suffer the emotional suffering of losing to a woman. and in sports where physical characteristics like that do matter, like wrestling for example, we already have a solution for that; which is things like weight classes. take the physical characteristic that actually matters and divide people based upon that! easy.

2025-04-08 04:07:28 UTC

the part that gets me the most about the "fairness in women's sports" stuff is that it assumes women are inherently inferior to men. okay so you're just misogynistic got it, let's move on to something that actually matters
