I don't see any disagreement here, but (I'm afraid) the term "transhumanism" is lost. It is so often associated with tech-fascist neo-feudalism (and computationalist insanity) by now that it will just confuse people to use it further in this broader and more sane way.

I understand your concern. I, too, view humanity as but a certain segment of an evolutionary process and, hopefully, not an evolutionary dead end.
But "transhumanism" is what this particular movement of delusional tech-weirdos is called at the moment. As you say, by choice of its own members.
That's why we'll have to stick with it for the moment and find a better term for the kind of immanent transcendentalism that is actually worth considering.

I'll be contributing to "Hybrid Minds" in Vienna later this month (registration at link below).
I'll provide some philosophical reflections on the idea that we can replace organic parts of a living being one by one with mechanical ones - and end up with an equivalent system. I call it the "Cyborg Myth." It is part of the machine view of the world that regards organisms as mechanisms and thinking as computation, but neglects the problem of biological organization.

So many interesting questions in those links: arguably, you *do* need a metabolism for the evolution of locomotion & later on, walking. Walking animals then evolved technological mimicry of their own mode of locomotion. Maybe not a direct functional link, but evolutionary dependencies that are endlessly fascinating & intricate.
Challenging indeed, but much work to be done, & much to be discovered here, but all of it glanced over by a superficial computational paradigm.

Did I miss the link to the paper?
"Reasoning" as in logical thinking *is* computational. Language, as well, is mostly transmission of regular (though often ambiguous) patterns. It's the contextual framing part that is not computational in nature. But that doesn't require consciousness either, just agency, as it happens in all living organisms.
At that level, I think we are making first steps toward a better understanding. But, indeed, it's a long way to consciousness.

Of course, this is a philosophical argument, so we can agree to disagree. But I don't see how we get a reasonable account of how experience and consciousness arise without making these metaphysical distinctions.
And, no. It's not a mere definitional game. Or, then, the computationalist or functionalist account is also just convenient definitions.
Without good concepts, no true insight. And concepts are socially constructed by human knowers, either way.

For me, to believe you can explain actual experience with computation is a fundamental category error. It forgets what computation actually is, and what it is supposed to do as a concept (the quacking and walking, alright, but not the meat on the bone, and the poop on the ground).
But: that meat *is* required for real duck-quacking and walking, in the end. It is what makes the computational reproduction of these behaviors mere mimicry.

The mimicry can work, almost to perfection, for the quacking and the walking. It's not embodied in the right kind of way.
So: I think you can reproduce language & reasoning to an arbitrary accuracy with computational systems that have no experience or consciousness at all.
I just don't see how convincing quacking & walking can then be used to argue for embodied experience or awareness.
There is no account that can do that, because computation is not what does that.

I agree. That *is* the problem of mimicry & the reason Turing regretted publishing the Turing test.
It seems that we can make statistical systems that imitate behaviors to arbitrary degrees.
It quacks like a duck, it walks like a duck. So computationalists believe it *is* a duck. But you can't eat the duck. And it does not shit like a duck either.
Usually, such arguments are dismissed as "metaphysical" (a four-letter word!), but I think good metaphysics are crucial.

Then you get a pretty solid theoretical argument why ententional states cannot be explained by computation alone.
If I understand your argument correctly, you are not disputing that anything we may count as "conscious" state needs a locus of experience? Again, that locus can only be provided by a teleodynamic (i.e. embodied, self-manufacturing) system.
Computation is about rule-based execution of operations. I just don't see where there could be an explanation for ...

I like Terry Deacon's concept of "entention." It's like intention, but without necessarily requiring a brain. A state or behavior that is about something that is not currently present. Deacon argues that it requires what he calls "teleodynamics." It's roughly the same as autopoiesis or self-manufacture.
Combine that with Rosen's insight that self-manufacturing systems are not computable and, as we've argued, cannot even be completely formalized:

To possess a belief, to have mental states, you have to be a locus of experience (a self). I don't see how a purely algorithmic system can have that kind of state.
But, of course, it can do a lot of mimicry in the domains of language & reasoning without anything like a mental state.
The self seems crucial to understand drive, agency, judgment, creativity, and all of those aspects of experience (and intelligence) that are *not* computational.
But maybe I misunderstand?

We need a better world view. And we need it fast. Science & engineering are at the heart of this. If there is a lack of respect, then it is for the vastness of all the things beyond our grasp, and the limitations of our own cognitive and practical powers.
Is it arrogant to criticize the vast majority of scientists & engineers this way? Yes, it may be. But it's also necessary and urgent.
Humility is to recognize the limitations of your own views, not to hold back...

I'm an evolutionary biologist. I can tell you that nothing-but-ism runs rampant among my colleagues. Much worse: fundamental physics. Plus all those physicists & neuroscientists who are computationalists. It's the majority view, far. Maybe not when you probe these folks about the complexities of their research practice in private. But 100% in their publications & 110% when they "popularize" their work for the public.
You must be moving in exclusive circles not to experience this...

Don't worry: this is exactly what Wimsatt is saying. Mechanistic/analytic models are powerful (and necessary, in fact) to do science.
What he criticizes is "nothing-but-ism," when the machine model becomes reality.
This is Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness: mistaking the abstract for the real.
I'm not surprised that engineers are aware of their models' limitations. Engineering is all about staying within margins after all.

That is great to hear! I think it's pretty rare still that people get a realistic view of science during their education. And in this case, it is especially great, since engineering is (not surprisingly) notorious for adhering to a more classical, machine view of the world.

(5) Truer insights from false models:
The point of a scientific model is not to be true, but to be false in interesting ways, leading to new questions and refinements - models that are wrong in different and more productive ways.
A perfect model would be pointless. It would be an evolutionary dead end in the history of science.
But models can be false in uninteresting ways: they can be plain wrong. Wimsatt lists the varieties of being wrong that are actually productive.

(4) Perspectives & piecewise approximations:
Levels are not clearly separated, and sometimes we need to view a phenomenon across levels. This is how perspectives arise. Again, they are not just some subjective point of view, but real features of our interaction with the world.
They allow us to explain certain sets of phenomena that are relevant to us. But complex systems allow for many such perspectives that do not add up in any additive or straightforward way.

(3) Beyond certainty:
Scientific knowledge is not certain, but it should be robust - discoverable or describable in many independent ways. It should also enable coherent action in a given situation.
This way, we can still judge the relative merit of a scientific idea, even if we cannot establish it as fact beyond doubt.
This leads to a Babylonian model of knowledge: richly networked robust nodes, rather than a single fundamental level to which everything can be reduced.

(2) Levels of organization:
A world in which beings like us can exist and evolve needs to be messy enough to allow for an open-ended future, but also needs to be structured and layered, so we can make predictions and test them through our actions. This is not only how science works, but how all organisms get to know their world.
Levels are not just figments of our imagination. They arise from our interaction with the world, and are therefore ontologically real.

(1) Limited beings in a large world:
As a premise, we must first agree that we are tiny but significant parts of the world we are trying to understand. This leads to a strange loop: all intersubjective knowledge arises from subjective experience of a knower that is is both subject and object of that study.
Without recognizing our limitations, and that strange loop, we fall into delusions of complete and objective knowledge, which are logically inconsistent upon closer examination.

Because naturalist philosophy is informed by and engages with the latest insights that science delivers. Both evolve hand in hand.
This kind of philosophy makes you a better researcher, because it will guide your practice and make you understand what you unique contribution to a field can be.
It also disabuses you of physics envy. Theoretical physics is really weird, and not a good model for any other science...

The basic take-home message is this: there is no knowledge without a knower. No "view from nowhere." But this does not lead to relativism - anything goes - either, as our perspectives arise from interactions with a reality that is beyond our control.
This is the best a limited being can hope for in a large world, where relevant cues are sparse, ambiguous, and often misleading.

Yes. Science is a social construct. But even though our knowledge will never be truly objective, or complete, we can still get a good grip on reality.
Science is the best way we've devised so far to get to terms with the large & bewildering world we live in.
It's unlike any other human way to generate knowledge.
But it's also deeply related to how any organism comes to know the world:: by acting on expectations & evaluating the consequence of our actions.

Public service announcement: this is *not* a dire wolf.
It is a genetically modified grey wolf made to resemble an extinct species, so a bullshit company can raise more money for their bullshit projects.
#Deextinction is a scam on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. It will *not* help us save endangered species. Instead, we should spend our money on preserving their habitats *before* they go extinct.

I wish they got that trauma for a worthwhile political cause and from protests that actually had a positive effect. Instead, it can be argued that the Gaza protests helped get the Orange one get elected. "Genocide Joe" and all.
And, yes, I'm asking: what's happening on U.S. campuses right now in terms of resistance? Wouldn't now be that moment, at five *past* twelve for your democracy, to make a last stand?
I really don't understand the priorities here.

The obsession with Gaza, "Genocide Joe," and now a total lack of student protests, since that fascist got elected. It just looks like the priorities were a bit off on parts of the left in the last year? Many openly siding with Hamas/Hezbollah as "anticolonial forces"? Moral compass off as well. All of this *helped* the coup in your own country, which totally deserves a snide remark (at the very least), I think.
The left better get their priorities and tactics right, and fast.
