Did I miss the link to the paper?
"Reasoning" as in logical thinking *is* computational. Language, as well, is mostly transmission of regular (though often ambiguous) patterns. It's the contextual framing part that is not computational in nature. But that doesn't require consciousness either, just agency, as it happens in all living organisms.
At that level, I think we are making first steps toward a better understanding. But, indeed, it's a long way to consciousness.
