I’m able to grow kale too, just forgot about it. I think it’s the dramatic changes in temperatures that confuses plants in fall/winter/spring.
I have noticed that primrose that grows in looser soil in beds gets larger and the roots are more succulent than ones in the ground.

I once planted yu choi in October and it bolted in November at 2 inches tall. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m in zone 8b with wildly fluctuating weather in winter. I can successfully grow collards, epecially tree collards.
Primrose is a biennial so it doesn’t flower the first year. The second year the plant gets huge and all the leaves/flowers on the stalk are edible and if you cut the stalk, it produces new flowering stalks and the copious amount of seeds are edible too.

I feel like giving up on brassicas like broccoli, cauliflower and yu choi in favor of eastern evening primrose (Oenothera biennis).
-it doesn’t suddenly bolt in hot weather
-it reseeds itself
-grows like a beast
-you can keep cutting it back and it’ll keep pushing
-you get so much more out of it, even the roots are edible.

Best time to graft citrus is in the spring:
Wrapping the entire scion prevents moisture loss so the scion is more likely to take than if left exposed. When the scion takes, it’ll start pushing through the parafilm.

3/ I’ve started most of my peppers this year. Switching more to baccatums bc they use more vertical space and so produce more. They also live longer - my madhatter peppers are still going that were started spring 2020.
In the race of baccatum seedlings, ají Guyana popped up first at 8 days, followed by ají lemon balls (variant of Ají limon).

When I was in middle school, high school and college, I was approached many times by “modeling scouts”most of whom were women. I didn’t take it seriously, thought it was pretty funny and would even joke about it to the scout’s face.

How is everyone coping with the cold?
I got a shipment of chips and built a compost/insulation layer around my greenhouse. It’s about half a meter high (over 1 1/2 ft) and a bit less that wide. It seems to be working as it’s about 20°F difference at night inside v outside compared to 9-12°F without.

Chilhuacle negro (annuum)
Another casualty of open-pollination. Obviously this is not a chilhuacle negro pepper. I grew three plants and they all came out like this. Wrong color, wrong shape, wrong taste. Sigh. I bought seeds from a vendor that close-pollinates his peppers so hopefully better luck next year.
Fresh: Bell pepper plus carrot and roasted parsnip. Tiny heat, sweetish and slightly tart. Juicy and crunchy. I kept the seeds but not sure if it’s really worth it.

Cold tolerance: so far my greenhouse hasn’t gone below 33.4/.78C and that is with the polar vortex dipping outdoor temps to 20F/6.7C. It’s possible that there are cold spots in my greenhouse but for very cold overnight temperatures, I have a fan to circulate the air.
When temps go below freezing I turn on Christmas lights. If it gets very cold, I fill buckets of tap-hot water and place them around the greenhouse. This raises the temperature ~15°F.

Climate and growing issues:
I live in a climate that is hot and humid from late March to early October with the main rainy season in the summer. Plants still dry out, and I often get aphid infestations. Peppers that are very succulent often get soft spots from dry outs. So peppers such as lesyas (annuum) don’t do well while tepin types grow like weeds.

A second major problem I had was that many of the seeds I purchased were open-pollinated. I ended up growing a lot of unintentional hybrids. Some of the pepper varieties didn’t taste the way they are purported to taste and some clearly were not at all what I intended to grow.
I say I grew over 29 varieties, that’s because I wound up with well over 29 different varieties. Unlisted are accidental scotch bonnets, peach habaneros, and other very weird crosses.

My biggest problem this year:
I grew too many Capsicum chinense. There are 5 major domesticated pepper varieties: annuum, baccatum, chinense, fructescens and pubescens. Chinense peppers often have a defining flavor singular to that species. The closest comparison taste-wise that I can think of is chawanmushi, Japanese savory egg custard.
This eggy flavor usually doesn’t dilute with cooking, more like it diffuses into everything else you cook the peppers with. By winter, I was crying sick of

With everything happening in the world, it’s really hard to post about plants. It feels like we’re on the cusp of WWIII.
I grew 29 pepper varieties this year and drafted a thread that is over 30 slides long and over 50 pics. It’s an honest, detailed review of taste (fresh, dried, cooked), growth/productivity and cold tolerance.

When I trimmed the peppers back, even the most damaged plants looked like they still have living tissue so next spring I’ll update on the long thread if any of the cold damaged plants bounce back.

Some peppers are clearly more cold tolerant than others so when I do my long thread next week on all the peppers I grew this year, I’ll also include cold tolerance.
Here’s a side by side comparison of SR bell stripey (species baccatum) next to Ají dulce (species chinense) one week after the hard frost. Most of the baccatums showed no damage to main stems while chinense showed significant damage.

Last pepper harvest. 🧵1/
Last week we had overnight temps that went down to 19-20F -7.5C. To warm the greenhouse, I had 6 5g (19L) buckets filled with tap hot water placed around the sides and a little fan to circulate air. The thermometer at its lowest point read 33.4F .8C…
But it looks like the leaves/peppers still froze/got cold damaged. Some plants stems look quite damaged so I cut everything back.

Still have peppers ripening but it’s getting pretty sparse. Moved the tree collards into the greenhouse bc it might get down to 20F/-6.6C tonight. I’ll add lidded buckets of hot water to keep the greenhouse above freezing.

Peppers are slowing down in the greenhouse. Temps so far haven’t gone below 39F/4C but ají panca is dying and ají charapita is showing cold damage. I cut back many peppers that weren’t producing and they look ok. The charapita is coming indoors now.

Finally ground the leaves from the jackfruit harvest this year. Instead of using a scissors to trim out the center vein, I just tore it out. Still takes forever to ground and sift.

Peppers still going in the greenhouse, mostly madhatters, ají dulce orange, zavory, ají habanero, SR bell stripey, ají chinchi amarillo, cacho de cabra and cheiro do norte
Ají panca is dying in the cold and the lowest it’s reached in the greenhouse at night is 39.5F/4.1C. I’ve cut back about half the peppers to overwinter and they are doing ok.

they’re extremely hot 😅. A friend gave one to his friend to try as a prank, the guy thought it was a fruit bc he knew I grew fruit and then was running around the neighborhood yelling in pain. They’re 70-90,000 SHU. (Or at least mine are).

The cut pepper in the pic below is a new one I started in late July. It’s a new hybrid (F5), crossed between ají charapita and habanada (both pictured).
It’s as prolific as both but the plant is compact like the charapita- potentially producing loads in a smaller space. The peppers are heatless like the habanada.
The taste in order of flavor detection is sweetish, mild chinense, hints of cooked summer squash and green bell pepper.
They’re ok, not as good tasting as either parent.

We had an unseasonal frost last week from a polar vortex and it was a mad scramble to save the fruit and veg. I got the cheapest/tallest greenhouse I could find ($107) and experimented with keeping it warm.
TL;DR doubled over frost cloth works just as good as a bedsheet in holding in heat: ~9-11°F higher than outdoor temps.
Heat source in a pinch was Christmas lights. Agricultural practice is to use

Just made apple pie with yuzucello and vanilla paste. I just chopped the apples and swished around a Tb of yuzucello and vanilla in a bowl. The alcohol bled in with the apples in the baking so you couldn’t tell the boundary between apple and citrus. Pretty good.
I used Arkansas black apples which are very high in pectin. They don’t lose shape in baking.

Red hybrid jabuticaba, compact shrubby tree that fruits nearly all year round (Grow in a pot, bring indoors in winter.)

probably. They bloom and fruit pretty quickly compared to other tomatoes. In a long growing season, the plants get huge and sprawling, bigger than any tomato I’ve ever grown.

they’re easy to find online for seeds. They’re marketed as “spoon tomatoes” or “currant tomatoes.” Just make sure they have listed the scientific name Solanum pimpinellifolium. I got mine from Sherwood seeds on Etsy.

Tankuro edamame beans, so pretty
Gardening notes: this plant gets caterpillars (Chrysodeixis includens) pretty badly that don’t affect any other bean plant.
Fresh, they are nuttier and taste better than grocery store edamame.

One of my hazelnuts just dropped its 1st nut. 😊 It was a 6” rooted cutting when I got it a couple years ago.
Corylus americana, “Winkler”
The hazelnut on the left is a European/American hybrid grown in the US from the grocery store and the one on the right came from my tree. American hazelnuts taste better than European, especially raw- less waxy, not bitter and have a bit of a coconut flavor besides hazelnut. The plants are also more pest-resistant.

So this year, maypops have taken over much of my garden, growing in places other plants struggle to grow. The bees are very happy but I’ve also seen hummingbirds at the flowers. Hummingbirds are also visiting jewelweed, who knew?
I wish I could get a pic of the birds but I can never get close enough before they fly off.

I’m growing 28 cultivars of pepper this year. Here are some notes on progress halfway through the season:
Madhatters and aji charapita still best performing peppers for space they take up, early ripening and yeild but these plants are years old and many peppers I’m just starting this year.
Trinidad perfume are really producing a lot. They are sweet-citrusy with heat less than jalapeño.

Apologies if this is a really dumb question. My peppers are ripening and was looking at different wood chips to smoke them with and was really disturbed that you have to pay nearly $10 for a little bag of chips - literally burning money for a little added flavor.

If I dehydrate the peppers next to/on top of the wood chips at a higher heat (175F/80C), could I get the same added flavor?
That way I could reuse the wood chips?

I can’t grow eggplants at all bc the raccoons will rip apart caging to get at the vegetables. I have a rinky dink setup with chicken wire closed with galvanized steel wire but they still manage to pull it apart.

are groundhogs sensitive to capsaicin? You can grow one or two super hot peppers like Trinidad Moruga, Carolina Reaper, Pepper X, Red Savina or a 7 pot and use it as a powder to keep them away.
You would need to take abundant care not to hurt yourself with them though. Wear gloves, chemistry goggles and a mask and use a separate grinder for the powder.
