Bob on his favourite branch during the day, watching his mate Helen in a nearby tree as she calls. There's a chance their babies may have hatched, but I can't say 100% for sure yet — Bob seems to be more actively hunting during the day, but Helen isn't yet. But Helen made this one call that I've only heard her make when she has owlets, so who knows!

Lately, I've been trying to practice taking habitat shots rather than my usual close crops. It's still a work in progress, but I was happy with how this one turned out. I think once I got my 600mm all I wanted was to use that zoom to its fullest possible extent, so there is some unlearning to do.

This shot isn't quite perfect, but l am just too excited to have Bob the Barred Owl dive for prey right in front of me, as well as actually facing toward me, which almost never happens. Typically, he will be facing me on his perch, then he'll turn around and dive in the other direction.

Raccoons have super-sensitive front paws. They can feel things really well underwater too. The water makes their nerve endings extra sensitive. So they can sort of “see” stuff around them by touching. Even in water, they figure out what objects are super precisely without looking!

Tucked among the grass, the Northern Flicker was ousy rooting around for worms and other tasty treats hidden in the dirt. In the past I've never been able to get a good angle on flickers when they are on the ground, they always seem to get nervous just as l start to crouch down. But this one didn't seem to mind my presence at all, and posed quite a few times for the camera.

Barred owls go by many names: northern barred owl, striped owl, hoot owl and eight-hooter owl! Eight-hooter owl might be my personal favourite.
