I have a feeling that the technical stuff mozilla has been teasing in their overview post on the experiment went right over the heads of most people who read it. For instance, the #heise article on the experiment that went out today was pretty much devoid of any useful information and the author apparently misunderstood how the brower's inputs are processed in multiparty computation as opposed to a single server.

Advertisers are gonna track. To me this looks like mozilla is trying to create an alternative that is privacy-friendly while being more attractive to advertisers than playing a cat-and-mouse game with adblock and browser tracking prevention developers.

On that #firefox feature that a lot of people are getting very upset about at the moment. Without even getting into the whole differentially private aggregation thing,
this is only going to affect someone in the first place if they (1) don't have adblock on and (2) click on the ad? like, in the case when their privacy is fucked already and AFAICT all #mozilla does is to make it slightly less fucked?

Tonight's fun debugging: It seems a gerbolyze user has managed to trip up *multiple* XML parsers independently by throwing them an attr of 18MB size to chew on. BeautifulSoup with lxml outright misparses the file, and gerbolyze's svg-flatten with pugixml non-deterministically sometimes misparses it.

Lol, I ordered something for work with delivery by #fedex, and there was some computer error(?) and the parcel was never delivered with tracking showing only a cryptic error message. As it turns out, they decided they don't need customer support anymore, and when you call, you get a computer that isn't able to help outside its very limited script, and just hangs up.
I suppose I'll never use them again if this issue doesn't resolve itself? How can you fuck up so bad as company leadership.

Lol, I decided after not using it for a while I should try FreeCad again. I tried to do a very simple model in it, which needed a thread. Turns out that in 2024 CE, FreeCad somehow still can't do (arbitrary pitch and diameter) threads. How?! I thought this is a CAD tool?! 😬

Quite the failure mode if you ask me. I guess I will be scraping that yubikey fde thing from all of my machines now, and go back to plain passphrases. Deleting the old seed files before the new ones have been written and flushed to disk is a pretty bad design error.

So my #arch #linux just catastrophically self-destructed. I was using arch with the yubikey full-disk encryption package, when the machine hung and crashed during a system update. The machine crashed exactly after the old initramfs files were cleaned up, and before the new ones were written to disk. Since the yubkikey fde thing stores the seed ("challenge") for the luks key in the initramfs, all copies of the seed are gone now, and the data on that disk is unrecoverable.

In particular the WL2868 seems fun: It has 7 LDOs with I2C-configurable output voltages at decent currents, and costs about the same as any other single LDO. It does come in a pain in the ass WLCSP with .35mm ball pitch though, so filled and capped vias are a must for that one.
