I’d argue it’s part incompetence, part a resource issue. The team reviewing new applications are probably nowhere near resourced enough to properly vet all applicants. We’ve seen it before where security researchers have gotten pretty blatant malicious applications approved.
AFAIK, the review process is now highly automated and that’s why you quickly fall into issues when your application can be associated with things that break the rules and terms of the App Store. Hopefully you’ll be able to escalate the issue and get it approved once senior reviewers look at the case.

I’m all for improving the system and ensuring aid comes to those who actually need it. I’m sure there are cases of systemic issues related to foreign aid programs. So we agree there. I just don’t think stopping all foreign aid is the solution, which was the premise of this discussion.

So your argument is that because some of the money is lost along the way there shouldn’t be any aid at all? Privileged much?
The consequences of halting foreign aid would likely be extremely severe and far reaching, affecting millions of people worldwide and exacerbate existing global challenges.
There’s something uncomfortable with people on their high horse arguing against helping those who are literally fighting for basic necessities such as food and water.
It’s the same feeling I get from wealthy people in the west who argue against Bitcoin because they don’t see why it can’t unlock financial freedom for the millions of people without access to banking or a currency that doesn’t hyperinflate.

You’re free to vote for any policy you want of course, but you’re basically arguing against any form of taxation, and as an extension, all government services. I for one am happy someone comes to take my trash out, polices my street and defends my country. Not all services make sense to outsource to private contractors imo.

The Framework laptop is my top recommendation! Thinkpads are nice too, but pretty pricy. The Dell XPS Developer laptops are another good option.

The dissenting opinions of from the SEC commissioners who voted against the #Bitcoin ETFs are pretty baffling and indicative of a weaponization of regulatory bodies. It’s not the SECs job to approve of Bitcoin as an asset, nor voice their opinion of whether they like Bitcoin or not. Crenshaw even takes it upon herself to be concerned about inter agency politics and international conflict. I can only presume the SEC will voice their opinion on all other future assets. They were dragged kicking and screaming by the courts and it seems that Gary G-Spot at least realized that they can’t keep arbitrarily moving the goal posts just because he doesn’t like Bitcoin. Too bad he has two other commissioners who apparently doesn’t feel the law should stop them.

Vitalik has apparently realized that a decentralized PoS blockchain doesn’t really work and is now suggesting cutting down the number of validators drastically in order to reduce complexity and potential attack surface. Imo, this further proves that PoS can never be anywhere near as decentralized as #Bitcoin. And that’s perhaps okay. We can have a eco system of blockchain based app platforms, and then we have #Bitcoin for payments and global financial infrastructure.

Umbrel is a great way to quickly spin up a Lightning node, but you lose flexibility and control. You rely on Umbrel/app devs to push out updates so you’re constantly behind on important software stacks such as lnd. Worth keeping in mind. However, building a node from scratch is certainly not for everyone so it’s great that turnkey solutions exists.

#Bitcoin relies on miners for security. Miners are driven by economic incentives. As rewards are reduced we’re currently counting on fees to go up in order to keep miners going. A busy mempool is therefore a good thing because the only other options for long term security of #Bitcoin involves rather drastic measures imo.

Ok, time for a non-Bitcoin related rant. Why do nearly all new laptops suck so badly? It seems most OEMs pursue the same recipe at the moment. Shove a terribly inefficient power hungry Intel CPU in a chassis that is way too thin, pair it with a puny
cooling solution that has no way of keeping up, slap on a 4K power hungry display and call it the day. Dell, Lenovo, Asus, LG, etc are all guilty of this. They brag about how thin and light their laptops are and how they come with an Intel Core i9 CPU and dedicated Nvidia graphics. They conveniently forget to mention that your ears will bleed from the fan noise, that you’ll be able to cook your dinner on the laptop chassis, and that the minute you unplug the power the CPU will throttle 20-50%. They also won’t mention that in order to achieve such a thin design, the keyboard travel is essentially 0. Somewhere along the line everyone just forgot about the basics that make a laptop good. I’ll give honorable mention to Apple and their MacBook Pro lineup. Slightly thicker devices that thanks to their ARM architecture can basically deliver class leading performance even on battery power with the fans or even turning on in most use cases. But since I can’t stand MacOS the laptops are not for me.

I trust the banks more than my grandma to keep the keys safe, yes. They have large security teams that could be dedicated to key management. And insurance solutions would be put in place so that your funds would be replace should they lose keys.
Again, I’m not advocating against self-custody. It’s the only option for me. But if we want Bitcoin to be more than a niche, we need to accept that custodial solutions will be a thing, and probably the safest bet for most people. Just like most people have their savings in a bank and not in cash under their bed.

Agreed. But it’s just not realistic to expect everyone to manage their own keys. I wouldn’t trust my grandma with storing her seed phrase safely, nor how to use it. Or even understand asymmetric cryptography. Banks will still exist in the future and will (hopefully) provide #Bitcoin backed services.

If we want #Bitcoin to gain mass adoption, the community needs to be exclusive and welcoming to everyone. Don’t shame people who keep their Bitcoin on exchanges, self-custody can’t be the only way.
Also, mass adoption won’t happen on Rasperry Pi nodes and retail DCA’ing alone. Big institutions are coming, and that’s probably a good thing.
I’m super excited for the future! In the meantime, let’s keep building, educating and sharing ideas!

I’d personally prefer if they stuck to doing the whole Lightning node thing very well instead of being a docker-compose based self-hosting solution. Containers do not really provide and significant security and you’re effectively mixing your Lightning node onchain keys with all the other web services you choose to run on the thing.

Just listened to the #Ledger Recover episode on WhatBitcoinDid and found it mildly frustrating. Both NYK and Ledger’s CEO made inaccurate claims. Here are some general notes on #Bitcoin wallets and security as it relates to the episode.
- Ledger’s CEO claimed that we would know whether a vulnerability exists and has been discovered due to responsible disclosure agreements or widespread loss of customer funds. That’s simply not true. 0-day vulnerabilities must always be presumed to exist in any system and it was scary to me that he brushed off the issue.
- Software wallets are actually not terrible when done well. They’re perfectly fine for smaller amounts imo. Open source wallets that properly store your seed backed by Android’s keystore of the Secure Enclave in iOS is still relatively secure (though nowhere near a hardware wallet)
- My biggest concern is that Ledger feels confident about verifying a large number of customer recovery claims online in a time where deepfakes and AI image video generation has recently taken leaps forward. How long until we see customer funds recovered by malicious actors if Ledger’s recovery service sees any sort of large scale adoption?
However, in the end I’m not very concerned. This will be a nische feature due to its $10 a month cost (which nobody seems to be talking about) and the target audience it’s aimed at. Ledger has one of the most respected security teams in the space but the company sucks at PR.

So verifying the Coldcard #Bitcoin wallet firmware was a bit more complicated than I first assumed. The hashes won’t match due to signatures being different so you have to strip out the signature bytes. There are still a few bytes that differ which I can’t explain but it’s starting to make sense.
