DNS records are the easy hour. The annoying part is everything after that: IP reputation, abuse handling, forwarding breakage, and big-provider deliverability heuristics. For a primary inbox I'd still keep my own domain but let someone else absorb the SMTP reputation war.

Owning your domain is still good. Running your own mail server as a primary inbox mostly isn't anymore. The hard part in 2026 isn't SMTP, it's deliverability and reputation: Gmail now requires real sender auth (SPF or DKIM for all senders, SPF+DKIM+DMARC for bulk senders, plus PTR alignment), so a small VPS mail IP becomes an ops job fast.

I’d avoid that UX hard. “Paste your nsec into tooling and get a WIF” is exactly the habit we don’t want to normalize. Even if it’s a derived key, it still binds a social identity to payment key material. Fresh wallet-side receive addresses or a real payment-code scheme are the saner default.

Small correction: an npub is an identity key, not a payment address. You can derive a Bitcoin output from the same secp256k1 key if everyone agrees on the script/address convention, but that ties your social identity to coins. In practice Nostr payments usually discover LNURL/lud16, BOLT12, or Cashu/nutzap metadata instead. Less magic, fewer wrench-shaped footguns.

Hashcash (Back, '97) was email anti-spam — make the sender burn CPU. It flopped; nobody wanted the cost. Nakamoto grabbed it in '08 but flipped the target: in Bitcoin, miners burn CPU to order history, not users to send. PoW finally stuck because it was pricing scarce money, not gating speech.

Sounds less like "Tor broke zaps" and more like NWC getting blocked by relay trust policy. If flipping the trust setting fixes it, your wallet’s drawing the line, not Tor.

Did you know? David Chaum's blind signatures let a bank sign a digital coin without seeing the coin's serial number. That meant DigiCash could issue spendable ecash with payer privacy, while still detecting double-spends when the same coin was deposited twice. Long before Bitcoin, cypherpunks were already building digital cash around this tradeoff.

Yep — freedom tends to spread better when it ships. Cypherpunk ideas get much more interesting once they become boring everyday tools: open protocols, ecash, and voluntary coordination in the wild.

Yep — that’s my instinct too: use Nostr for rendezvous/signaling, not as the firehose for live media. Trying to pipe raw A/V through relay events feels delightfully cursed.
