If we had a more parliamentary system, yes, but in this two party system, 12% is not enough.
The other problem is that most issues cross both color and party lines. They affect people by class, and in this society we dislike class discussions even more than race discussions. Bernie has, since 1983, been preaching the same message about the working class because he believes it transcends race and religion, and it has been a way for him to build a useful power coalition.

When i was in college i stole a bottle of mercury, and then while on a summer job stole two 500 ml bottles of fuming nitric acid from the industrial ceramics company i was working for (yes, that one)
Despite having no h2so4, I managed to nitrate enough mercury to convince myself that it was unnecessary to repeat the procedure. The amount needed to convince me? Less than a gram.

Heinlein was opposed to democracy as a technocrat and an intellectual elitist, I've always thought that what people termed a libertarian streak was really an anti-idiotocracy streak. He's pretty explicit in both ST and Friday that democracy without civic restrictions or prerequisites is a recipe for disaster.

As usual, Krugman sees what he wants to see. It's like he doesn't know the construction trades exist. There is real competition from immigrants in skilled trades, not just in farm field work. And surprise surprise, many of the white tradesmen are MAGAts.

One of the few things that still gives me hope that this country will survive... when I go to the VA and there is a WW2 vet there (typically in a wheelchair with an entourage of nurses and attendants since the few that are left are pushing 100 now) we all stand at attention while they pass through the room. There is massive respect among veterans for the guys that actually went and fought the Nazis.
