- your protagonists a bit on the broken side of things
- women who don't give a toss about what anybody is telling them
- "oh, shit" conga lines (that thing starts a few minutes after an explosion destroyed large parts of the ship and it doesn't get better anytime, soon)
And if you DON'T like:
- toxic relationships
- violence as the ultimate solution
- stories without glimmers of hope

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. You can standardize the format, I think, so it is the same for all printers and they don't have to do extra work to make it fit. Of course spine variations dependign on page count. I mean, I guess the Big A does something like that. Could be even more limited. So, say, if authors deliver the ebooks in that format it can be printed and distributed in each country. Less CO2 emissions, local printers supported.

Exactly. Some printer who just wants to tackle the big bad.
I looked at what it cost with a local printer but it was only feasible if I would have let 1.000 copies printed (which is illusory to sell) and even then the cost would have been around 40 €. And then packaging, sending, postage...

Ah, got you. I totally understand where you are coming from. It is the reason I went wide for the ebook, which is available on all stores. For printing, unfortunately, amazon was the only feasible choice. I am looking into other options as well and if I find one, I have bookmarked your toot now and will let you know.
The sad things is that indeed, the sales I make on amazon are unmatched by other platforms so far. As a queer person, this sucks big time. As an Indie author who hopes at one point getting enough sales to cover the cost of the cover and editor, I don't think I can ever NOT offer it on amazon.

#PennedPossibilities 561 — Give us your thoughts on the genre of your WIP. Do you love it, is there not enough stories written within it, are you an avid reader of the genre, etc.?
#ScienceFiction is such a mixed bunch...there is so much crap and so many books and series I absolutely adore. My dad was an avid reader of #SciFi, so I grew up with the worlds of Perry Rhodan and E.E.Smith but also with the more intellectual concepts of Lem or Asimov.
For me, the ensemble cast SciFi like Star Trek always resonated more than the ones where one single hero saves the day. Sometimes even Star Trek fell for this, often it was down to the captain to come up with the right solution.
There are never enough stories in a genre, I think. I am writing a universe that I missed: not a stellar exploration ship or some military ship but a meager cargo ship with a crew that is tackling the odds together, in which there are a bunch of heroes, some very unlikey ones among them, in a world where a lot of things went very wrong but also, on an individual level, things go occasionally right.

#WordWeavers 01/15: How long is your longest work?
"End of a Road Trip" came in at 170 chapters (174 if you count the artworks) and 228K words.

It was the last part of a four part epic story that had to be written because they ended the brilliant BBC series "The Hour" on a cliffhanger and we never got a resolve on screen. I had to write the Lix/Randall storyline to a satisfying and believable ending.
The whole cycle took 354K words.

I recently reread parts of it and while there are a lot of things I have learned since I wrote it (ESPECIALLY but not limited to speaking tags) and I think some parts could be straightened I didn't find a chapter I would take out. Each part was necessary to work through the trauma of these two characters and finally give them the happy ending they deserved.
I would do it again and I would probably still end up with just as many words.

Okay, I am used to a lot of bullcrap the Big A pulls but a warning that the *kindle edition* of Herald Petrel contains BPS in the packaging is a bit much, even for them.
I mean... uhm... "Don't lick your kindle" should be common sense...
Any other #IndieAuthors experience similar warnings?

I think writing characters that feel real and relatable, at least that is what I get the most feedback on.
And writing dialogue that feels natural.

A while ago I started placing a copy of my book in public spaces. I have no idea where they go. Inside is a text that people are allowed to keep it as long as they like but should leave it in a good place for someone else to find it if they don't want it anymore.

No major spoilers but it will for certain not continue how you think it does. At least I hope so... But I hope you will again fall in love with my characters. 😊

It is busy season. I got to proofread and index my non-fiction book this weekend to meet the deadline.
I got:
- all the food I need so I don't need to do groceries
- tea
- determination

- enough time

If you were to get an audiobook version of your story how would you handle passages like:

where the way the voice actor speaks already tells the listener what the narrator then narrates?
(same like tags like he said, she replied, etc.)
Please boost for bigger sample size.

Hahaha. Your inkling MIGHT be right. For context: I asked @npub1gwh…s4vk if she had the contact details of Alia E. Torrie and I was able to unearth her with that and the other part of the equation is that I haven't yet used the money from the course I taught in February. You know, the one I traditionally use for commissioning art for my works but it doesn't always have to be art, right? You are now allowed to put 2 and 2 together.😆

The proof copies are here and the images are looking good but since these were for the paperback (that I then went ahead and decided NOT to have with images) I'd say wait for Monday when the paperback arrives, then you'll get the final thumbs up. The cover is looking awesome in glossy, though!
