It's not very well documented but in simplest terms it's a webserver that connects to a nostr relay as the database. It enables SSR, event caching, session management and like... a lot of stuff. Books force you to actively chew on the information you're consuming; digital content is generally pre-processed to make consumption effortless but often lacking in nutrition. A truly well-written book can not convey its message in less words than it uses; if someone cannot process 30 pages worth of content then their comprehension has an upper bound. I've had to fight for my attention span and would encourage anyone else who struggles with reading to start practicing with YA novels to build up the mental muscles required to get through the tough stuff.

Yea I think that the promise of nostr is a real potential for horizontal scaling (more relays) without needing vertical scaling (beefier relays). I think that worrying about the commercialization of the platform is a non-starter, because it's heading in a fundamentally different direction than Twitter is. Nostr will thrive when it's implemented hyper-locally.

I have to sell people websites as part of the development process, but trying to "sell" people on participating in yet another online platform is something I've been doing for years - I want to communicate with my irl friends but not from a disempowered position.
Nostr is just a piece of technology. It's an important one, but we don't go around trying to convince people to use an app because it's built with Django. People also don't seem to care about censorship or autonomy as much as they care about convenience - but nostr *is* very convenient. Being able to generate a keypair and participate is huge.

Sure, but have you actually tried doing this in a real-world scenario where you're trying to onboard people onto the platform? Has anyone ever reached out to you via your npub after you leaving that as a point of contact? I can imagine it maybe working if you do a teaching seminar on nostr but I have yet to actually see any signs of this protocol in the "real world"

Yes, but there's a careful balance to address here. As much as the npub is useful within this context, it's not familiar to people. I think that nip-05 identifiers are a really good convergent point for a number of different protocols. For example, my address can be used to look me up on nostr, but it can also be used to send me lightning via bolt12 and to send me emails.
Don't get me wrong, I know that domain names are owned by corporations. We're just not at a place to circumvent that quite yet - more people need to actually hold and identify with their private keys before we get there.

I think that part of the issue here is that nostr is not Reddit, GitHub, X, Discord, etc. Nostr can implement these patterns, yes, but they're already implemented elsewhere. Working to imitate the current "social media experience", even tying it in with zaps and Bitcoin, is not going to sway a lot of people because the "social media experience" is more oriented around entertainment than it is real social interaction.
Nostr protocol is incredible and I'm very grateful for the effort that has been done so far. It is embedded into the foundation of my work and I think I could probably do a bit of writing on why people should care about signed data, if that would be helpful. I just hope people appreciate the protocol for its simplicity rather than its complexity.

This is a good point! It makes more sense to keep the connection open until the response is complete - this leaves room for doing things like sending notifications or posting event data without creating an additional thread.

Hmm. I haven't had too much trouble with this conceptually but I'm interested in better understanding your perspective. I'm currently working on a synchronous system which uses a relay as the main database. It handles the querying server-side, closes the thread on EOSE and sends the data to the framework/templating engine so it can build the response.
What do you think of that?

Interesting. I caught up on this thread because I was the person who pointed Tim towards Websockets / SSE for his ongoing projects. I also believe in only using the most basic tool for the job, but do you think that it's less complex for clients to make one query, wait until it's resolved and then make another?
I think that EOSE is a fairly useful tool to combine those two requests into one, and any half-decent implementation can send a CLOSE after that point if they aren't interested in subscribing.

That said, I'd encourage you to think about the implications of paywalls. Paywalling your content will probably just make people less likely to read it (unless you have some sort of clickbait-y title). Receiving donations is a better way to allow people to express their gratitude for your content without forcing them to participate.

'easy' is relative. The most basic solution is adding a QR code or bc1 address and doing the book-keeping manually. If you want fancy stuff like payment confirmation and auto-invoicing, it gets hairy really quickly.

I'm saying that the channel between our nodes is the only one for me which has routed zero payments. The channel I have open with @nprofile…sdxk also has substantial fees but it was draining constantly until I set fees to match. I paid the channel-opening fee in both cases (which is fine by me), but if people are setting fees based on what makes profit rather than what's best for the network then the most successful nodes will be the big companies that can afford to spend 10BTC on opening channels.
Profit motive incentivizes a star topology centered around nodes like Amboss and Zeus, which can then be leveraged into custodial wallets and LSPs. If the only reasonable way for me to become a participant in the Lightning Network is to use someone else's node or to pay someone for liquidity, then Lightning will fail to decentralize money in the way that Bitcoin is built for.
I think it's important for LN operators to work towards a mesh topology so that there's no situation where two hops (e.g. me to coinos, coinos to you) is prioritized over one hop (me to you). That's where problems regarding centralization start to show up, and that's how we end up with everybody using Coinos or Alby to zap each other - if all the routing goes through those nodes anyways then why not just save a hop?

I've been running a lightning node for years now, just started rebalancing to add liquidity to the network. I have collected 635 sats by routing and today I paid over 4000 sats in rebalance fees to keep my main channels from zeroing out.
I did a bit of research and I realized that I've got channels with people who have fee rates set at 1000x what I'm charging - looking at you, @nprofile…5e6s - and I'm left unsurprised that there are people who don't believe in Lightning as a workable solution.

If you're really just getting started, open the simplest text editor available on your computer and make a file called "index.html"
Write "<h1>Hello World</h1>" in that file and save it. You should be able to open it up with your web browser. You should be able to start building from there.
If you want to dive right into the nostr world you can add the code linked here and start scripting stuff. Nostr is a couple levels above basic HTML though.

Solar V5 is starting to come together. Here is a basic proof-of-concept for the resolver, which takes a request url (i.e. 'notes/') and translates it to a server-side nostr query. The resolved data is returned in the 'events' object and can be used to dynamically render templates, build custom logic, and more.
I'll make the source code available as soon as I finish moving everything over from V4, stay tuned for details.

Great write-up. I was stoked about Svelte when it first showed up on the scene. I went through the whole tutorial, took notes and everything. I really appreciated the basic design patterns and the simplicity of how it compiled down to Javascript.
As I learned more about the JS ecosystem, I stopped being so keen on the complexity that seems inherent in modern frameworks. If everyone is compiling and serving the dist/ folder, how many people really know what a javascript module is? Does picking up the latest and greatest JSX-enabled, Tailwind-interoperable framework compromise your learning of basic concepts in HTML and CSS?
I would like to offer an annendum to this article, pointing out that it's important to choose tools that leverage the wisdom you've accumulated *and also* tools that will encourage you to accumulate the right kind of wisdom as you grow over time. AI enabled coding may seem very convenient at the moment, but introducing a black-box cognitive dependency goes against everything that Open Source Software stands for, in my view.

Currently planning my 5th major revision to SOLAR. It can be really frustrating to go through this process time and again before I'm at the stage where I can start getting other people involved, but once there's multiple people standing on the foundation it gets a lot more difficult to make these sort of sweeping changes - even when it's for the best.
My current target is finding a consistent way to address nostr notes with a human readable path so that they can be stored in the correct place on a filesystem. I will be focusing mostly on addressable events, converting the <kind>:<pubkey>:<#d> into <kind_name>/<username>/<#d>/ - notes with no d tag can use the ID instead.

Before I ever knew about nostr, I was introduced to the Lightning Network by a collective of makers operating out of a basement in downtown Vancouver. They had a Bitcoin beer machine and gave members access to their space via keyfob.
The whole system was driven by an event-sourcing system, and I believe that nostr is the key for building a more effective implementation than the one that brought me here in the first place.
Whether or not this NIP is accepted, I will be using `kind -1` to denote events which are intended to stay within a localized space.
Digital interaction builds digital community; real-world interaction builds real-world community. We can do both.

I think that the nostr community is still missing a sense of data ownership. Like yes, it's cool that everything is cryptographically signed, but at the end of the day if people aren't holding onto their own data it still leaves the door open for relays to become centralized and for people to lose sight of the wider network.
