👍 the only “issue” I have had is adjusting the sensitivity on the alerts. At first the insects at night would set off the motion detection. But you can adjust the sensitivity. It does a great job of recognizing humans and vehicles.

Yes, I use them all round the farm and winery. I settled on them mainly because of the feature so set a schedule to receive alerts. So I don’t get notifications all day long while we are out and about but receive notifications at night

Last fermentation of the year. Wild yeast fermented Mourvèdre from our estate vineyard. This vineyard is 5 years old and has never been sprayed. And now with our sheep flock doing all the weed control. The only time a tractor entered this vineyard was for harvest. Yes, a single tractor pass the whole year!

Just chiming in on the sulfite discussion. It is not possible to make a wine with 0 sulfites. Yeast naturally produce some sulfites during fermentation the natural amount would produce 5-9ppm. Common good winemaking practices if you are adding sulfites to end up with 25ppm free sulfur in the finished wine. Sulfites provide two functions. 1) as an antioxidant scavenging oxygen in the wine which helps keep the wine from “browning”. 2) sulfites are an anti microbial keeping things from growing in the wine helping the wine age longer. The short of it is large or low quality producers use a lot of sulfites (100+ppm) Good producers use no to minimal sulfites. As a rule of thumb white whites will have more sulfites in them because there are naturally less antioxidants in white wine then red.

Pump over time. Petite sirah at the peak of fermentation. We pump over the juice from below the “cap” to irrigate the wine over the top to make sure everything stays wet and fermenting evenly. This also allows for a little bit of oxygen and some of the fermentation heat to be blown off to help keep things cool.

Labor continues to get harder to find and more expensive. Over the last few years we have moved from 100% hand harvesting our grapes to now we are 90% mechanical harvesting. The machines today are surprisingly gentle on the vines and the fruit. And we are able to get the grapes to the winery much quicker so the fruit is colder and we get a better cold soak prior to the fermentation starting.

Spend a little time and take a look. I got involved in the redistricting last time around and it shocked me. It was the most openly corrupt process I have witnessed in local politics. Looking at these maps you don’t have to be particularly partisan to see this is gerrymandering. Some obvious issues, take a look at district 02. And well as Paso Robles. As well as the district I’m in, 04. Yuba City to Santa Rosa. We might as well be in different states.

Wells pumping sand is very common in certain areas. Things to consider, what size well? And how deep is it pumping from? is it only pumping sand when it starts pumping? Or all the time. We often flush our wells when they first start and then they pump clean after about ten mins.

Friends and fellow prune farmers from Chile visited us today. It was interesting to reminisce I worked in Chile back in 2007. Back then Argentina was a socialist hell hole and had no future and Chile was the shining star of South America and a model from more the rest of the continent. Fast forward and today Argentina is on a fast track to a free market model for the rest of the developed world and Chile is regressing into a socialist backwater of South America. Summer is here: cover crops have dried up. The residual crop residue has formed and armor protecting the soil. Bottling time. Almost all small wineries use mobile bottling. Think “rent a bottle line” truck shows us and we bottle 1-2 days as much as we can and then off goes the truck, and finished wine stays at the winery ready for the bottle aging process to begin. #nostrwine #lowtimepreference
