In a statement posted on social media hours after news broke that talks with the Sharaa-led government appeared to have collapsed, SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami signaled that the group was preparing for open confrontation, writing: “For our people, either a life with dignity or a death with honor.”
The SDF emerged from the Syrian civil war as a powerful militant force and, at its height, controlled roughly a third of Syria’s territory under a parallel political system known as the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), including the Kurdish region of Rojava.
The DAANES has long defined itself as a democratic confederalist project operating in direct opposition to both the former Ba’athist state and Syria’s current Sunni Islamist rulers. During the war against the Islamic State, it also drew large numbers of left-wing and anarchist foreign fighters to its ranks.
At its peak, the administration governed all territory east of the Euphrates River, encompassing most of Syria’s oil fields and two major dams. Since the fall of the Assad regime just over a year ago, the new government in Damascus has pushed to fold the SDF into the Syrian Ministry of Defense and dismantle the DAANES in favor of centralized rule. Before talks collapsed, al-Sharaa circulated a decree pledging protection for Kurdish civil rights in a future Syria, though it proposed no material changes to the constitution.
Several former SDF fighters who spoke with Drop Site described themselves as committed to fighting against attempts by Damascus to reintegrate them and expressed suspicion and hostility towards the country’s new rulers, particularly in the wake of bitter fighting between Damascus and Kurdish groups in Aleppo earlier this month and previous massacres targeting Druze and Alawite minorities in the country.
“The current Syrian interim government has through its actions proven its murderous mentality,” said Serafin, a former SDF fighter based in Hasakeh, who declined to give his full name for security reasons. “If a total war for survival were to break out on this land we live on tomorrow, whether we like it or not, we would have to take up arms again to defend our people and our land.”

He described a city being deliberately rendered unlivable under Israel’s ongoing assault. Alnabih said this is Gaza’s third winter in tents built to last “a few weeks, not two years,” as sewage systems, water networks, and fuel supplies collapse. “More than 250,000 tons of solid waste accumulated in every corner of this city… 75% of water wells have been destroyed. One hundred percent of sewage pumps are not working.” “This lovely city has been destroyed in the past 24 months… hundreds of thousands of families are staying in tents, without any basic services,” he told us.
Alnabih told Ryan Grim that Israel has only “stopped the war on television,” while bombardment continues. “The strikes continue every day… food insecurity, water scarcity, huge damage to infrastructure.”
He said Israel is openly pursuing mass expulsion: “Netanyahu said Rafah would open one way only, for people to leave, and no one would be allowed to return. That’s a very clear plan.”
Though his own children are outside Gaza, Alnabih said many refused to flee the territory and Gaza City in the north that has come under renewed Israeli attacks recently: “More than 300,000 people stayed in Gaza City and refused to leave,” he said. ”We will not allow Israel to take our city.”

After two years trapped in Gaza through Israel’s genocide, Drop Site contributor Hamza Salha has finally reached safety in Ireland on a journalism scholarship. Displaced repeatedly from Jabalia, buried once beneath rubble, and forced to bury his grandfather inside their besieged home, Hamza has lived through what he calls “hellish survival.” Many of his friends and colleagues were killed, including fellow writer Yousef Dawas, a gifted photographer.

REPORT | Saudi outlet Asharq Al-Awsat reports that Israel has launched airstrikes against prominent families in Gaza City after their elders refused to collaborate with Shin Bet’s plan to establish clan-based governing bodies in place of Hamas.
The Israeli intelligence agency approached elders from the Bakr and Doghmush families, proposing that they form local armed groups to manage aid, administer neighborhoods, fight Hamas, and pass intelligence to Israel. The goal, sources said, was to divide Gaza into “regions” run by clans or armed groups, preventing the emergence of a unified Palestinian government and blocking the foundations of any future Palestinian state.
When both families rejected the offer, Israel launched retaliatory strikes. In Sabra, southern Gaza City, an airstrike on the Doghmush family killed 30 people, with at least 20 still buried under rubble. Hours later, Israeli warplanes bombed a Bakr family home near Al-Shati refugee camp, killing six, wounding 11, and later struck another multi-story Bakr residence and an empty building near Gaza’s port.
A Bakr elder reportedly confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that Israeli intelligence had demanded they govern Al-Shati after Hamas was cleared out, but the family “categorically refused.” He said they knew reprisals would follow and immediately instructed relatives to evacuate, especially women and children.
The Bakr clan, one of Gaza’s largest with deep roots in the fishing trade and members linked to Fatah and Islamic Jihad, stressed that their refusal was a patriotic stance against collaboration with Israel, not loyalty to Hamas.
The report adds that Israel has increasingly relied on clan-based militias operating in east Rafah, east Khan Younis, east Gaza City, and the northern Strip. Many families have publicly disowned members who joined such groups, led by figures like Yasser Abu Shabab, Rami Helles, and Hossam Al-Astal. Hamas has repeatedly ambushed these militias, killing or wounding some fighters, and in some cases arresting and executing collaborators publicly.
The attempt to split Gaza along clan lines is not new: after the first year of genocide, then–Defense Minister Yoav Gallant advanced a similar scheme, but Hamas thwarted it by threatening and killing two leading figures who considered cooperating.

🇩🇪 On October 7, 2024, then-German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told the Bundestag that Israel’s “right to self-defense” included striking civilian sites in Gaza.
She said: “Self-defense means not only attacking terrorists but destroying them. When Hamas terrorists hide behind people, behind schools… civilian places lose their protected status.”
Academics—more than 300 of them— demanded she retract the statement, warning it distorted international law and risked greenlighting civilian massacres. Protesters in Berlin condemned it as an invitation to violence.
Under the Geneva Conventions and customary international humanitarian law, civilian objects (homes, schools, hospitals) remain protected. They only lose that protection if directly used for military purposes (e.g. as a firing position)—and even then, the attacker must apply distinction, proportionality, and precaution. Civilians inside remain protected at all times. Baerbock’s framing ignored these safeguards, giving the impression of a blanket license to bomb — as Israel has done with thousands of civilian sites over the course of the genocide.

From my perspective, Israel has no intention of ending the war or even releasing the hostages. Everyone knows Netanyahu only cares about staying in power and avoiding prison.

But many people feel that Trump hasn’t used enough force to pressure Netanyahu.
Dr. Bahbah:
That’s true. But Trump did apply enough pressure back on January 19 when he said, “Agree to a ceasefire deal,” and Netanyahu did. Now we hope that this time the president will follow through. I believe he genuinely wants to end the war, see the hostages go back to their families, and see Palestinian prisoners freed. I believe he will pressure all sides to reach a solution.
Anchor:
The issue seems clear. Hamas says the card it holds is the hostages. If they release them, what guarantees are there that the war will stop and Israel will withdraw?
Dr. Bahbah:
We’re not at that stage yet. Right now, there’s an offer. The details don’t need to be overly complex. Hostages are released and prisoners exchanged on a set day. On that same day, the war is declared over. Within a week, Israel withdraws from half the Strip. Within another week or two, Israel withdraws from the rest of Gaza.

Is that scenario realistic?

Palestinian-American businessman and unofficial Trump envoy Bahbah told Al Arabiya he delivered a U.S. proposal to Hamas: release all Israeli captives in exchange for ending the war. He says Washington has stepped up its involvement, but in the end it depends on how much pressure it’s willing to apply on Israel: “Without American pressure, nothing will happen.”

A meeting was held in Washington that lasted, as I understand it, about six hours. It was decided that there would be one final offer on the table: the release of all prisoners in exchange for the end of the war. We indeed communicated this to Hamas, and at first they hesitated. They weren’t sure if this was official or unofficial, and so on. Then they saw the president’s tweet.

That was last Sunday (the meeting).
Dr. Bahbah:
Yes. Once they saw the president’s tweet, they were convinced it was official. Hamas’s reaction was almost immediate: they agreed to the deal. They wanted it to be comprehensive—hand over all the Israelis, receive a certain number of Palestinian prisoners, and at the same time, the war would end. Hamas also expected Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza.
Anchor:
“Some people, especially those who are frustrated, think Israel won’t end things that easily—get its prisoners back, end the war, and withdraw. I hope I’m wrong in that assessment.
Dr. Bahbah:
I often hear from Israelis themselves that Netanyahu needs American pressure to accept a deal. Without that pressure, it’s hard for him to face Smotrich and Ben-Gvir. Right now, the U.S. position is clear: they want the war ended and all hostages released at once—not in groups of two, five, or seven. So what are the chances Israel backs away from this? As of now, they’ve rejected it, saying Hamas is trying to deceive. But what I know is that the U.S. has stepped up its involvement. In the end, it all depends on the type and amount of pressure on Israel. Without American pressure, nothing will happen.”

Every time we get close to an agreement, it falls apart. This is deeply frustrating—not for us, but for the people of Gaza. So this time, is there real American pressure being applied? Or will Witkoff just turn against Hamas tomorrow like he has before?

All I can speak to is what I see. What I see now is that there’s an American offer: end the war in exchange for the release of all prisoners. What will happen after four or five days, only God knows.

When you passed this message to Hamas, they announced publicly that they accepted a comprehensive deal. But people always ask: what about the details? How many prisoners will be released? This issue is not on the table. If it comes up, we will address it. But for now, it’s not on the table. ⚡️ BREAKING: Microsoft employees and other demonstrators with the No Azure for Apartheid movement are currently occupying the office of company president Brad Smith. Workers say they have re-established a “Liberated Zone” inside Microsoft’s executive Building 34, renaming it the Mai Ubeid Building in honor of a Palestinian software engineer killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Bloomberg reported earlier today that Microsoft has spent the past year trying to crush employee dissent over its ties to Israel’s war on Gaza — including enlisting the FBI, working with police, and censoring internal posts mentioning “Gaza.” The company has suspended and fired workers who spoke out, while employees have continued to stage disruptions, from mass emails to sit-ins and viral protests. The employee-led movement is protesting Microsoft profiting from and enabling Israel’s atrocities in Palestine through its Azure cloud and AI tools. Despite repression, workers say they won’t stop until Microsoft cuts its ties to Israel’s military.
According to the organizers’ statement, today’s action included deploying noisemakers into the atrium, unfurling banners, and delivering a “People’s Court Summons” to Brad Smith. Their demands include: cutting ties with Israel, calling for an end to genocide and forced starvation, reparations for Palestinians, and ending workplace discrimination.
