I've been using i3 and Sway for years, and I'm now using Gnome almost exclusively.
Do I miss tiling windows and extreme customizability from time to time? Sure.
But what I don't miss is spending hours at a time trying to get apps to deal with the window manager aggressively resizing them, or getting screen sharing or screenshots to work.
Like they say: Choose the right tool for the job. Use something user-friendly if that's your focus. If you want raw hack value, use something else. 🤷‍♂️

Öh, Crypto-Nerds, wie genau funktionieren eigentlich PINs für Girocards und Kreditkarten? Insbesondere frage ich für die "Wunsch-PIN"-Funktion, mit der ich online(!) die PIN für meine Kreditkarte ändern kann.
Ich ging bislang davon aus, dass die PIN den Hardware-Crypto-Teil der Karte entsperrt und nicht bis zur Bank wandert.
Bei Girocards scheint das auch so zu sein, denn da kann ich die PIN nur am Automaten ändern.
Bei Kreditkarten kann ich aber online eine neue vergeben? Wie geht das?

German here. I struggle to find a source in English, but https://www.recht-gegen-rechts.de/gesetze-gegen-rechts/symbole-strafbar-oder-erlaubt.html has an overview of forbidden and allowed symbols. Check the three at the bottom, which are all allowed because they're unambiguously symbolizing opposition to Nazi ideology.
Can't say anything about the situation in Austria though.

TIL: You can create popup menus that open and close based on a button in plain HTML, no JavaScript needed.
You can also position elements to be adjacent to other elements in plain CSS, no JavaScript needed.
And you can have the browser make sure that these things are positioned inside the viewport and automatically move to a fallback position, for example to have a dropdown open _over_ its associated button if that button is at the bottom of the screen.

The instance I'm on is not on Mastodon 4.5 yet, therefore I haven't had the chance to play around with the user interface yet, but according to that discussion I've linked, pasting a quotable link will show in the user interface that Mastodon is preparing to quote that post.
The solution, if you just want to link to something and not "quote" it, seems to be to click a "cancel quote" button when composing your post.
But users need to be aware of this or there absolutely will be leaked DMs.

The upcoming "quote post" feature in Mastodon and other Fedi software can lead to DM leaks.
"DMs" were always "everyone that's mentioned via @ can read the message".
However, with the quoting feature, _linking_ to someone's post from a DM, even without mentioning them, may be interpreted as "quoting" their post by Mastodon. And if that user allows quotes, they will be notified of your (DM) post _and_ be able to read its content.

I mostly do software hacks, sometimes hardware ones. Crafting hacks are very rare, but here we are.
I present to you: Magnetic Paracord.
It's simply magnetic rings lined up on paracord. Very useful for non-permanently attaching light-ish things to metal surfaces, in irregular shapes, and with easy attachment and detachment. When you're using many small magnets and can't be bothered to attach/detach each one individually.
I'm using it to attach mosquito net to the entrance of my van.

This also highlights an ActivityPub issue: If you approve someone's follow request, you're technically not granting that _user_ access, you giving their _instance_ access to your protected posts. And it's then up to that instance to behave in the correct way and only show your protected posts to those users you have actually accepted.
Sure, from a technical standpoint this might be obvious, but it can still be somewhat counterintuitive.

#Codeberg, my code hosting platform of choice, suffered an attack earlier today that sent racist spam to many users.
This could've happened to other platforms too, but Codeberg was targeted because they're explicitly welcoming people and projects with a diverse and inclusive mindset.

TIL: #Vim can do
:w >> filename
to _append_ to a file.
(You can omit "filename" to append to the current file.)
Also, :w accepts a range, so if you want to append only a few lines from the current buffer (e.g. by selecting them in visual mode), you can do that.
And :w also accepts a range when _not_ appending, allowing you to save only a selection of lines in the current buffer to the current file. (You might need to use :w! if it's an existing file, to protect you from fuckups.)

The last couple of days I've heard or read multiple reports of people being invited to #Matrix conversations by people they don't know. I even got one myself.
To me this sounds like a spam or phishing wave, or even some kind of (semi-)automated attack.
Anyone got any insights about that?

So these four things happened:
1. #Bitwarden, who always advertised being open source, introduced a non-free dependency into their client.
2. People start speculating whether this means that Bitwarden will become proprietary. https://github.com/bitwarden/clients/issues/11611
3. After three days of speculation, founder and CTO Kyle Spearrin posts a comment saying that this is just a measure to isolate a part of the code from the GPL.
4. He then closes & locks the issue.

We're used to index.html being the file that's displayed when requesting what's actually a folder over HTTP.
I wonder whether there's a better word than "index", because index reminds me a lot of an alphabetical index, which is usually not what these files contain.
I've been thinking of "home.html", but I'd say the "homepage" is only the very top level of a website, not the index in subfolders.
Maybe something like "main.html"? Am I overthinking this?
What would you say?

I'm a proponent of static websites. Most generators use a folder structure with Markdown files and other assets as the input.
However, not all users are confident editing Markdown and YAML front matter etc. by hand.
Are there any good web frontends for this kind of stuff?
It should feel like the authoring backend for WordPress or whatever random CMS, with a WYSIWYG editor, and the result are Markdown files & assets. Bonus points for Git support.

So, if you care about the _content_, if you care about the web as a _publishing_ platform (and not something providing a streamlined, feature-rich, pixel-perfect "experience"), you should focus on making your site available for as many browsers and users as possible.
I'm not talking about "Chrome & Firefox". I'm talking about Lynx & Ladybird & BeautifulSoup, and if you haven't heard of them, not only read up on them, but actually start _using_ them.
Let's re-diversify interacting with the web.

There will be basically one software to access the web (Chrome and its derivatives), one entity to de-facto dictate the content (by choosing which standards to implement and which sites to add to blocklists "for safety reasons").
We've been seeing efforts to remove the URL bar for years and years now. How long until we're back at AOL Keywords?
We'll need a grassroots movement to either re-democratize the web (by building interoperable, semantic sites) or move to a new set of protocols & tools.

That being said, I feel like "the web" as in "open standards, and sites are being built with interoperability and semantic content in mind" is basically almost lost anyway. These days, we're building pixel-perfect web "applications".
Back in the days, when CompuServe's and AOL's non-web services were still a thing, I considered their walled-gardenness inferior to the web. But now, Google is building a new, larger wall. The AOLification of the web is almost complete.

I haven't given this a lot of thought, but hear me out for a moment:
When people say "the complexity of modern web technologies makes it almost impossible to create a new web browser from scratch", what they really mean is "a new web browser that supports everything Chrome does".
I wonder whether that's even necessary. After all, the web _should_ be built with progressive enhancement in mind.
But who am I kidding, right? Most people only test their sites in Chrome these days.

Suppose you're using less(1) to view a config file that has lots of commented-out explanations and defaults:
less /etc/ssh/ssh_config
It's hard to really see which lines are in effect and which are just comments, especially without syntax highlighting.
But! You can use less's filtering capabilities to only display lines that start with a character that's not a hash symbol. Type "&" and enter a regular expression, then hit return. For example:
&^[^#]
Enter an empty regex to stop filtering.
