If we as progressives think it's okay for people to engage in things that are unhealthy to their bodies, like consuming drugs, or sex with lots of bruising, or eating burgers and pizza all the time,
then why are we struggling so much to allow them to engage in things that are _psychologically_ unhealthy?
Because we absolutely do. We disapprove of it, we judge them for it, we blame them for hardship that results from it.

"FOSS maintainers are unpaid and don't have the resources to manage large open source projects, they _have_ to use AI to get anything done."
I've seen this take a couple of times in recent weeks, and I've got two things to say about it:
1. We've been able to manage large open source projects for decades in the past, without LLMs.
2. Ever thought about how there may be a connection between "FOSS is unpaid" and capitalism producing trillion-dollar AI companies and more and more billionaires?

Damn I hope we spend 2027 to 2037 suing the whole LLM industry into the fucking ground.
Every software project built using license-violating training data, every piece of music made by stealing from thousands of artists simultaneously, every picture created by ripping off people who barely have enough to make a living.
Sue them all for copyright violations.
I don't care if we need twice as many lawyers to do that.
Or, option B, abandon copyright altogether. Both works for me.

2026-03-04 12:51:13 UTC

"The test data has also been moved to a separate repo to help prevent any licensing issues"
So you've used the LGPL-licensed tests provided by contributors as a spec for Claude?
And of course Claude wasn't trained on the existing chardet code, nu-uh.
Like, usually when trying to free code from copyright or NDAs, it's an elaborate process, with the authors having to guarantee to never even have looked at the original code.
Did you add "pretend you didn't see the original" to the prompt? lol.

2026-03-04 12:39:14 UTC

Dan Blanchard, maintainer of Python's "chardet" library, used Claude to rewrite the entire project's codebase so that he can switch the license from LGPL to MIT.
https://github.com/chardet/chardet/pull/322
I highly doubt that this is legal, but who the fuck cares these days anyway, right?
If I was a contributor to that project, I'd tell him in no vague words what I think about shit like that. "No bro, it's totally not relicensing your code bro, this is totally new code bro!"

Do I miss tiling windows and extreme customizability from time to time? Sure.
But what I don't miss is spending hours at a time trying to get apps to deal with the window manager aggressively resizing them, or getting screen sharing or screenshots to work.

The instance I'm on is not on Mastodon 4.5 yet, therefore I haven't had the chance to play around with the user interface yet, but according to that discussion I've linked, pasting a quotable link will show in the user interface that Mastodon is preparing to quote that post.
The solution, if you just want to link to something and not "quote" it, seems to be to click a "cancel quote" button when composing your post.
But users need to be aware of this or there absolutely will be leaked DMs.

2025-11-03 10:59:29 UTC

The upcoming "quote post" feature in Mastodon and other Fedi software can lead to DM leaks.
"DMs" were always "everyone that's mentioned via @ can read the message".
However, with the quoting feature, _linking_ to someone's post from a DM, even without mentioning them, may be interpreted as "quoting" their post by Mastodon. And if that user allows quotes, they will be notified of your (DM) post _and_ be able to read its content.

Well I can see how that would be a controversial opinion for many Germans, not just chaos.social users.
Germany's past is causing all kinds of … complications when it comes to our perception of Israel and its politics, and our legislation on Holocaust denial doesn't make it easier.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if people reported that post because they interpreted it as "downplaying the Holocaust", which is legally problematic over here.

As a user on chaos.social, I don't think there's any more Zionism here than on other servers with a mostly German user base.
That said, as far as I know you're only getting an anonymous report, while the chaos.social admins will see the reporting user's name, right?
I'd assume that if some chaos.social users were reporting lots of Palestinians "for simply existing", our admins would notice that and put an end to it pretty quickly.
Or are you seeing things that suggest otherwise?

By the way, if your website only uses minimal styling, or no styles at all, consider setting
<meta name="color-scheme" content="light dark" />
in the <head>. This allows browsers to also use their default dark mode styles on your page, without you having to do anything. If you don't, it'll always be light mode.
For example, these screenshots show this minimal document and how it will be rendered when the browser is set to light or dark mode.

I mostly do software hacks, sometimes hardware ones. Crafting hacks are very rare, but here we are.
I present to you: Magnetic Paracord.
It's simply magnetic rings lined up on paracord. Very useful for non-permanently attaching light-ish things to metal surfaces, in irregular shapes, and with easy attachment and detachment. When you're using many small magnets and can't be bothered to attach/detach each one individually.
I'm using it to attach mosquito net to the entrance of my van.

This also highlights an ActivityPub issue: If you approve someone's follow request, you're technically not granting that _user_ access, you giving their _instance_ access to your protected posts. And it's then up to that instance to behave in the correct way and only show your protected posts to those users you have actually accepted.
Sure, from a technical standpoint this might be obvious, but it can still be somewhat counterintuitive.

Oh, great. #Pixelfed had a broken implementation of "follower-only" posts, _and_ fucked up the disclosure / bugfix release process.
https://fokus.cool/2025/03/25/pixelfed-vulnerability.html
Summary of the bug: If you have a protected account (on Pixelfed, Mastodon, GTS, whatever) and a Pixelfed user followed you and got approved by you, _all_ users on that instance were now able to see your followers-only posts, not just the one you approved.

TIL: #Vim can do
:w >> filename
to _append_ to a file.
(You can omit "filename" to append to the current file.)
Also, :w accepts a range, so if you want to append only a few lines from the current buffer (e.g. by selecting them in visual mode), you can do that.
And :w also accepts a range when _not_ appending, allowing you to save only a selection of lines in the current buffer to the current file. (You might need to use :w! if it's an existing file, to protect you from fuckups.)

Follow-up question: Did the Matrix spam(?) you've seen come from matrix.im accounts? Because the cases I know about all did.

The last couple of days I've heard or read multiple reports of people being invited to #Matrix conversations by people they don't know. I even got one myself.
To me this sounds like a spam or phishing wave, or even some kind of (semi-)automated attack.
Anyone got any insights about that?

me: the what now
Oi! Did you know that SQLite has changeset tracking already baked-in?
https://www.sqlite.org/sessionintro.html
It tracks changes made during a session & returns a "patch" that you can then apply to another SQLite file 🤯

So these four things happened:
1. #Bitwarden, who always advertised being open source, introduced a non-free dependency into their client.
2. People start speculating whether this means that Bitwarden will become proprietary. https://github.com/bitwarden/clients/issues/11611
3. After three days of speculation, founder and CTO Kyle Spearrin posts a comment saying that this is just a measure to isolate a part of the code from the GPL.
4. He then closes & locks the issue.
Looks totally not suspicious, yeah. 😬

We're used to index.html being the file that's displayed when requesting what's actually a folder over HTTP.
I wonder whether there's a better word than "index", because index reminds me a lot of an alphabetical index, which is usually not what these files contain.
I've been thinking of "home.html", but I'd say the "homepage" is only the very top level of a website, not the index in subfolders.
Maybe something like "main.html"? Am I overthinking this?
What would you say?

I'm a proponent of static websites. Most generators use a folder structure with Markdown files and other assets as the input.
However, not all users are confident editing Markdown and YAML front matter etc. by hand.
Are there any good web frontends for this kind of stuff?
It should feel like the authoring backend for WordPress or whatever random CMS, with a WYSIWYG editor, and the result are Markdown files & assets. Bonus points for Git support.

So, if you care about the _content_, if you care about the web as a _publishing_ platform (and not something providing a streamlined, feature-rich, pixel-perfect "experience"), you should focus on making your site available for as many browsers and users as possible.
I'm not talking about "Chrome & Firefox". I'm talking about Lynx & Ladybird & BeautifulSoup, and if you haven't heard of them, not only read up on them, but actually start _using_ them.
Let's re-diversify interacting with the web.

2024-10-07 09:57:33 UTC

- reply

There will be basically one software to access the web (Chrome and its derivatives), one entity to de-facto dictate the content (by choosing which standards to implement and which sites to add to blocklists "for safety reasons").
We've been seeing efforts to remove the URL bar for years and years now. How long until we're back at AOL Keywords?
We'll need a grassroots movement to either re-democratize the web (by building interoperable, semantic sites) or move to a new set of protocols & tools.

2024-10-07 09:50:36 UTC

- reply

That being said, I feel like "the web" as in "open standards, and sites are being built with interoperability and semantic content in mind" is basically almost lost anyway. These days, we're building pixel-perfect web "applications".
Back in the days, when CompuServe's and AOL's non-web services were still a thing, I considered their walled-gardenness inferior to the web. But now, Google is building a new, larger wall. The AOLification of the web is almost complete.

2024-10-07 09:41:06 UTC

I haven't given this a lot of thought, but hear me out for a moment:
When people say "the complexity of modern web technologies makes it almost impossible to create a new web browser from scratch", what they really mean is "a new web browser that supports everything Chrome does".
I wonder whether that's even necessary. After all, the web _should_ be built with progressive enhancement in mind.
But who am I kidding, right? Most people only test their sites in Chrome these days.

Suppose you're using less(1) to view a config file that has lots of commented-out explanations and defaults:
less /etc/ssh/ssh_config
It's hard to really see which lines are in effect and which are just comments, especially without syntax highlighting.
But! You can use less's filtering capabilities to only display lines that start with a character that's not a hash symbol. Type "&" and enter a regular expression, then hit return. For example:
&^[^#]
Enter an empty regex to stop filtering.
