Part 1 of thrift store finds!
The biggest thing I got isn't shown here; I've posted it in another video in the replies!

We have tripod adapter plates! Four of them, for some reason. Obviously I only need two, and we'll sell the other two - they're still used on Hitachi's current cameras. I couldn't find a second CCU cable. I'll keep looking, but it's no matter anyway since I only have one tripod to work with.
Other than learning and fine-tuning the image adjustments, I can put one of these to work anytime. I'll mount one of the CCUs in the rack, and then I have the option of running SDI to the capture device on my PC, and/or running component to the Betacam SP VTR. But I'll make a video of these too, of course :apartyblobcat:

I have three sealed 10-packs of Dysan 3.5" HD floppy disks for sale on eBay. I got four packs years ago, and am finally accepting that I have so many loose floppy disks that I will never get to them. So I'm keeping one pack and selling the rest as a lot.

I've been a viewer of Regular Car Reviews for over a decade. Now I'm deciding whether or not to unsubscribe.
Last week's video featured a car owned by a trans girl, as they often do, and there are terrible things being said about the owner in the comments. He even hearted one of them, maybe just not realizing what was being said. But they're going completely unmoderated.
I pinged him on Twitter to let him know he had some comments to take care of. Crickets. Now I've realized that every video featuring a trans owner has hateful comments that they do not remove.
I realize there's a "why are you looking at the comments" angle to it. But for me it's the principle of it. If I ran a channel that big that has as many transgender people on it as they do, I would be combing the comments, no matter how long it took.
It feels like they're purposely allowing the hate comments for extra engagement, and I have huge disrespect for that. It makes me wonder if that's why they have so many trans guests to begin with.

@nprofile…38cd @nprofile…6e42 There is no logic because they still work fine - a well-known YouTuber just claimed that they'll "never work again" in a viral video for the views, despite that he knows very well that it's not true.

Hi - I'm necro-replying because I'm preparing a box of a few things to go to the Internet Archive, and I'm reading the page you gave me and got to this part:
"If your donation is a few boxes or less and you have already confirmed we do not have your media already please pack into sturdy boxes of a consistent size, label all boxes as “MISC Deduped” and their media type"
Does that mean I have to put every article in its own box? It will be prohibitively expensive for me to ship if so. It's the floppy disks, book, some 5.25" floppy disks, and a user manual.

By August 29th I'll be disabling shipping to the U.S. on my eBay listings as a result of the removal of the de minimis exemption for imports from Canada.
I understand that this essentially ends my selling of stuff on eBay - I only sell a few things a year already, and on top of that I get one Canadian buyer for every 10 American ones. I'm just not willing to figure out using a courier, and none of them have drop-off locations here anyway.

@nprofile…el4d That doesn't seem to be an option on this LSI MegaRAID card!

One of the things I want to do with the Supermicro server when I get it fully operational is use it to make a large enough RAID 0 array to store an off-site backup of the network drives at work. But RAID 0 drives need to be all the same capacity, and I don't have enough 500 GB or 2 TB drives to do this, so I bought two of these "MDD" 2 TB SAS drives.
These are white-label "refurbished" drives, which basically means the SMART has been wiped and they could be in any state of health. But at $10 a pop, it's worth taking the chance just for the fun of it.
I've also heard bad things about the seller goHardDrive, although some people say they're better today than they used to be.

@nprofile…el4d The thing I find funny is that 1.53 TB is still a HUGE amount of space - none of my computers have that much storage. Puts everything in perspective.

@nprofile…xlhv @nprofile…nc9w @nprofile…5r3x @nprofile…8dg9 Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. I want it to go to someone who will archive it there. I just don't have the time and energy to do it myself.

2025-07-06 17:39:27 UTC

Found this stuff at work. Would anybody here want it for the cost of shipping from Canada to archive it?
I can archive the disks using Adfread, but I don't want to put in the work to scan the book, so I'd rather send it all off to someone if there's an interested party.

Someone an hour away from me is selling a Commodore 64 with floppy and cassette drives, all the documentation, and a bunch of software for $300, all untested. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering making a dumb decision right now.
Edit: Gave him a low-ball offer justified by everything being untested. If he refuses then I'll be satisfied for at least trying.

The IBM Portable PC made me nervous when suddenly the screen started jittering, it began typing phantom characters, and emitting a high-pitched beep. I was worried the power supply was acting up.
Then I had a light bulb moment, put my phone back where it was after taking this picture, and made a phone call, and it happened again. Turns out this thing naturally isn't shielded from microwave radiation, and my phone receiving a text while sitting on top of the computer made it go haywire :blobcat_flop:

Built-in modems were more-or-less standard equipment on home computers sold from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. These modems range from hardware-based units similar to serial modems, to softmodems that depend on the host computer's processing power to function, sometimes to the detriment of reliability and quality.
I've had twenty-two such modems sitting in a box for a few years. In this video we will look at each one, and fully test it by calling other modems within my internal telephone network, as well as calling a BBS over a VoIP telephone line. For the 56K modems, I will call a 56K-capable dial-up access gateway. The results seen herein show a vast range of quality from one modem to the next.
